Champion 26509 Sydney | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread gailg - 2007-10-18 12:04 PM Hey, gang, don't stress about % -- yet. One odd thing about these volume challenges is that they don't assume any periodization. Good training should include build and recovery, so some weeks will be high and some will be low volume, and if you are following any training program you likely have some mix of intensity and volume (e.g., I am doing less mileage next week than this week, I think, but there's more hills, more progressive tempo, more speed work, and a longer long run -- I'm working harder, but the scoring on this challenge isn't likely to reflect that; don't yell at me Cat, just an observation not a criticism). So not everyone should be at 50% yet...and in fact I'd be disappointed if y'all were up around 70% so early in the month. I know I'm not that high WRT my own goals. Also, another odd thing (from a basic competition standpoint) is that people can add onto their goals all the time -- so some person (from another team of course) could easily set a low goal and then just keep upping it (not necessarily sandbagging, just w/o much of a clear idea of what they can or should be able to do in a month), clearly hitting 100% without effort, whereas others could somehow systematically plan the entire month. From a "get out there running" standpoint, the first method is definitely preferable since you just keep going and going and that's what we're here for, really, but for those of us who like to pick the most appropriate goal and then stick to it, mid-challenge numbers and accolades for those who have the current highest % can be discouraging. Remember (modified from Roger Young, cycling coach at the LAVelodrome), plan your run, then run your plan. That's the way to build strength and to avoid injury. No no yelling at all... I dont disagree.. hence my point that everyone right now is well on track to meet their goals. Im a great example of this actually my first week of the challenge was a recovery week for me so I had very low volume compared to the rest of my team. This is why the only figures that really count are at the end of the challenge and why I say to people its against YOUR training plan not someone elses. Another thing that skews the week by week tracking is races. For example several participants have completed marathons during the challenge so their week by week will fluctuate significantly between taper, race week and recover... While this is meant to be a challenge and people are encouraged to use it for motivation its NOT about doing MORE than you should be to the point of injury but about pushing yourself a little more OR using it to make sure you are consistent and meet your plan for the month (the Tour De France challenge was a good example of this where I asked for number of rides for the month instead of volume to encourage consistency making workouts instead of volume) So basically... after all this I agree with gail... this is about YOUR month as a whole... the week by week updates are nice but thats why I write so much about what individuals are doing, saying and achieving and do NOT focus so much on the numbers... they are nothing more than an indication at this stage... That wasnt yelling was it? Edited by kaqphin 2007-10-17 9:20 PM |

And ... honestly, I've gotten my best inspiration from tri girls. No, not in that way! Well, maybe, but it's because I want my inspiration to look like their inspiration. I understand exactly what you mean. It's fun to look AT guys. But that's a different type of inspiration. LOL Dee |

Champion 23360 Taser-World | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread gailg - 2007-10-17 5:21 PM Goodness, gang, you are really scaring me ... much as I love pix of hotties, I like the real ones better ... As your team taskmaster, I am challenging all of you to go out and talk IN PERSON to a REAL, non-virtual hottie in the next few days -- one who is NOT an ex, a brother/sister, a person in another part of the state or another country, or existing only via Internet. It MAY be your current SO, a coach, a movie star who owns a dog, a person in transition/at the start of your next race, or me if you can actually find me while I'm out on my long run or my long ride... (and yes, Spokes and Dee, you should both play, too). Penalty points if you put yourself down in any way (e.g., "I am slow," "I am overweight," "nobody likes me," "poor ol' Charlie Brown"). Bonus points if you get said Hot One to tell you that YOU are hot, fit. More bonus points if you reply, "Yes, that's because I'm a triathlete." Double bonus points if YOU are the one who says you're hot, fit -- but sincerely. Sarcasm and you lose all your points, plus more. Dr. Gail, team shrink and life coach Wait, but..... I don't know any real people. I'm on BT.com all day, remember? OK, I'll play. Guess that means I'm going to the gym tomorrow. Does it matter if said "hottie" is like, an 80 year old guy? The gym is full of 'em. And I promise not to post any pics of their legs, either. Dee |

Remember (modified from Roger Young, cycling coach at the LAVelodrome), plan your run, then run your plan. That's the way to build strength and to avoid injury. Actually, I'm in this category. I have a decent idea of my swimming capability. But I had NO clue of what goal to set for running. I've never DONE any running/jogging before, even. (Yes, there's a reason that I'm on a newbie team) So when it came time to set my goal for the Challenge, I sketched out a "plan" and picked a number that I thought would challenge me.... I was surprised when I got to 50% more quickly than I would have guessed. But now, I'm adding "hills" and such, so my mileage will be accumulating more slowly during the second half of the month, even though I'll actually be working harder. Dee |

Expert 1112 I'm a Tennessee girl living in SoCal. | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Sorry if my post earlier about us being pretty far down the list left the impression that I didn't think we'd make it. I was just trying to help cheer on team. I had a bit of time tonight before swimming, so I put in some time on the treadmill. So, I ended up walking 1.9 miles and swimming 400m tonight. Like Judi, I should hit my goal this week, too. I need another 2.2 miles, and I should get during my Friday run. |

I did my treadmill time at my usual gym before heading over to swim. When I was there, one of the trainers came up and said he just wanted to give me props for how consistently he's been seeing me at the gym lately. He told me he could tell I was definitely making progress and to keep up the good work. |

I know I'm lagging a bit behind (Bad team leader!!!), but I've gotten in 5.5 miles so far this week, and I still have two more planned runs tomorrow morning and one longer one on Sunday. Hopefully about 10+ more miles this week. Then we'll see how much more I have to catch up!!! |

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Hey Bumpers - just dropping in to let you know that I'm pretty swamped at work today, so I won't be on much and I have choir tonight and then have to find the time to bake something for a church thing on Saturday (cuz tonight is the only time I have!). So just wanted to send out a friendly team-leader-y shout out to go run your butts off! We need to hit 100% (and some of us are already almost there - awesome!!) and show all the hard-core folks what we're made of, just like the newbies did during the TdF Challenge Cuz really, what's more embarassing than gettin' passed by a newbie? |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread At the risk of losing points, I'm going to fess up that I'm pretty down on myself right now; however, I promised myself when I started this journey on August 12, that I would be completely honest with myself. It has absolutely nothing to do with the way I look. I'm aggravated in that I feel like I'm going backwards in my progress instead of forward. I talked my boss into letting me cut my hours back by 2 so I could have the time to train. I fully expected to be truly running for my training instead of nursing an injury and walking (I know, I know). I also expected to be in the pool right now, but the Y doesn't have anyone that will work with my schedule. My ortho doc doesn't want to do surgery for my ulnar neuropathy, so I'm not sleeping well at night because of the braces I have to wear and I feel like no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't get anywhere. I'm not paranoid or anything like that but I almost feel like everyone is out to go against what I want for myself right now. Husband is nursing his own injury right now (stitches from minor surgery) and he's down because he's not doing any sort of training and is missing his half mary next month, and since he's my biggest cheerleader, and he's not so cheerful right now, I found myself fighting tears this morning (and right now) that I am feeling so down. I'm too tenacious to give up, but I just feel so, I don't know, lost? hopeless? po'd (definately). |

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread No penalty, Terri, in fact bonus points for knowing when you need help, and asking for it! It is a challenge to train regularly for one sport, let alone 3 sports at once, and injuries just add to the difficulty. Let's think about your goals and try to break them down into manageable chunks, so you are always making progress toward some of them and eagerly anticipating others. How about starting by stating what you'd like to do by Dec. 1 that you can't do now, then what you'd like to be doing by Jan. 1 that you won't be doing yet by Dec. 1? Then we can help you set up a plan.

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Terri, Don't give up right now. You're facing a lot of obstacles, frustrated, exhausted...Take small steps and goals but keep taking them. I bet if you looked at your logs--even from last month you would see progress. Do you have clothing that you've gotten too small for? You've gotten on a bike for the first time in YEARS, that's an accopmplishment! You're consistent in doing what you CAN do, there's a lot to be said for that. Is there a masters swim group in your area? Some avenue OTHER than the Y for the swim time? (I know the membership isn't cheap and I wouldn't pay for double membership just for a particular class...) What about a local tri club with scheduled training days? Hang in there, you CAN do this. Okay, here's the platitude...The journey of a thousand miles begins with each single step Judi |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Terri, I really feel for you, and thank you for honest thoughts. It's easy to train when everything's in place and you feel good. But it's an extraordinary feat to get out there even when you're frustrated, injured, and faced with obstacles. You're an extraordinary lady. You've been putting the miles together, trying and doing things you've never done before, and it's clear to me you're drawing from a pretty deep well of fortitude even if you feel empty. Like everyone else said--we all cover our distances the same way, one step at a time. What can you do today? Just today? |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread My goals: Lose weight (doing that) Get healthy (seem to be faltering a bit on that) Run 5K in November (that's not going to happen, thank you heel) No firm plans for after November, until April (Carlsbad 5000) except to volunteer for Ironman California For now, my first tri is a super sprint, in May, I think? I'm not giving up. It's really NOT in my nature. In fact, the tattoo I am waiting to get is a kanji that translates into "hang in there" My clothing is getting large on me, but again, it's not the way I look that's getting to me. I realize that will take a long time, and I'm cool with it. As to the other swimming avenues, I'm rather limited because of my current work schedule. On Nov 1 I'll be getting back into town around 4 and that will help, but by then the Y will be closed (or at least a couple of weeks later) until after December. The Masters swim program (and reeeeally local tri club) is run through the Y. Husband and I just a couple of weeks ago joined the San Diego tri club, but won't attend a first meeting/get together until a couple of weeks from now. He swims at the base and I'm hoping I can talk him into helping me when my hours change, but I don't want to interrupt his training time, you know? As to sticking with the training, there lies the problem. It's starting to wear on me where I am NOT sticking to my routine. I haven't been out to run/walk for 3 days. In the past it's bothered me, right now it's not, except that I'm letting you all down. And thanks Spokes for the nice-guy input. I remember reading about your hit and run and it really ticked me off. I figure part of it is Husband's attitude right now, and I'm really trying to fight that, but we've been married for 26 years, and it's kind of hard to not empathize. Thanks for hearing me out. I really appreciate the support from all of you, especially on the bad days. Edited by MrsUSMC 2007-10-18 2:32 PM |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Terri -- it's really difficult when your main partner's down, no doubt. Something Jeff Galloway told me has stuck in my head ... for his marathon training program, other than long runs, you only have to run/walk twice a week for half an hour. He told me that anything is better than nothing ... that doing four 15-minute segments was fine, and if you could only walk it, you'd still get by for a week or two. Just remember ... walking around the block after dinner counts. |
