Veteran 123 Mobile, Alabama | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! WTG, Peter!!! Wow... I'm blown away here. What an awesome "first" tri, Peter! Ok, guys. I can't help it. I'm feeling very outclassed by you guys. Y'all are REALLY competitive. All I wanted to do was finish. *sigh* But I'll say this: I'm so proud to know you all! You are incredible! Just awesome, Sticka. Totally awesome! My "part-time" job turned out to be full time for the first 8 days because the library has been short handed. I'm completely worn out. I guess I'm as tired do to the stress of a new environment and expectations as much as anything. I am on my feet and usually moving all day long and I've been coming home beat. Now I know how the rest of you feel every day, lol. My hubby just keeps grinning at me in a kind of "it's about time" way. And who can blame him! ;^) I've only been to the gym once, since I started working and that time only because Katy came home for the 4th and talked me into going after work on Thursday. And I haven't run or ridden my bike at all. (I do use the stairs between the first and second floor every day! That counts for something, right?) Anyhow, I guess this new lifestyle will take some getting used to, not to mention muscle and strength, lol. Hope to get back to the gym soon - maybe even tomorrow. I'm down for a half day tomorrow. Thanks for the kind words everyone! Again, Peter, great job! YOU ROCK. And Bryan? Seafood of course! Is there any other kind? Almost all of the restaurants on the Causeway (that's Hwy. 90 between the shores and runs alongside the I-10 Bayway) are good, but my favorites are "The Original Oyster House", on the left coming from the west, and "Ed's Seafood Shed" (great fresh crabclaws and a nice view!) on the right. If you go to Ed's, be sure and try the homemade mango pie for desert! Miss you guys, too. Take care all! I'm still sTRIving! |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! mav - told Mrs Sticka about your predicament. When she regained conciousness after her laughing fit (JUST KIDDING !!) she suggested empsom salt baths. Also, we have a jar of udder cream (I think you can get it at Wal-mart, etc.) that is a marvelous balm for dry, cracked skin, etc. Flipper - great to have you back on line although shame shame for making me so hungry this late at night with all your talk of seafood While you may not be tri-training at the moment sure sounds like you're getting lots of exercise - it's all good. Time for this ole turtle to retreat into his shell for the night ... |

The good news is that I spent most of yesterday swimming and playing in the ocean and I think the salt water had very healing powers. Today I was able to bike 13 miles...not totally comfortable but I was able to do it. I have a tri in 2 weeksI HAVE TO BIKE!!!! Juanita..BS on the out class stuff...LAL LA LA LA...I'm not listening to any of it. I am thrilled that you have your job. NOW its time to get into your routine which means getting your BUTT to the gym!!!! I'm not kidding. We have missed you and were glad your back. I CANNOT be the only female in this group!!!! You had your workout vacation... we all have them. You will prbably not feel great when you start again, but your fitness will come back very soon. Please dont be discouraged... just keep coming back!!!! Danskin womens is the 27th. I'm excited. I believe I will be in one of the first waves. They put the old folks first in this race which is great because there are 2500 women!!!!!!! Pete give the Mrs my thanks for the suggestions! |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Flipper, Flipper, Flipper... Stop it with the inferiority mumbo jumbo already. Do you realize how important you are to this group? We need you. Personally, I think about you EVERY TIME I swim. You are an inspiration to me. When I think about quitting, or not doing my swim because it's so boring (happens every week) I think about all the efforts you guys are making and it picks me up. You are a big part of that. Each of us has different goals, but the only valid measuring stick is ourself. I myself have finallly let go of the goal of beating my little bro in our OLY on the 26th. I realized that I am doing this for me, and it makes me feel great just to know that I can do this. I'm ok with that. The first time I went to the pool in January, I couldn't do ONE LAP without stopping. That's reality. How far were you running last year? Biking? You are doing amazing things, Juanita, just think about how far you've come. So 'cowboy up' as they say in these parts. Get back on that horse and ride, girl! We need you. I need you. --Leston |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Leston - having lived for close to a decade in western Canada, I am familiar with and LOVE the expression "cowboy up" !! In my view rodeo cowboys are the standard by which true professional athletes should be judged - they pay to play and they only get paid when they win. Of course, they're also the craziest folks around - strapping themselves onto wild animals and all. |

Had good intentions on Wednesday and Thursday to go for a ride after work but ended up on my a$$ in front of the TV and from there I did not move I am going to hit the pool at lunchtime and try to do a few lengths. |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Turtles, Sorry I haven't been here most of the week! LOTS going on in personal life. I even missed training Tuesday and Wednesday due to life and work issues (I hate it when this stuff gets in the way of my training!). I did a 30 minute swim this morning and tried something new: Don't come up for a breath when making the turn. I kept my head in the water during the entire turn and kick. I was doing it for 2 reasons: 1. Previously I was pulling my entire head up at the turn and getting a really deep breath. This certainly helps in my pool swimming, but as I found out, doesn't come close to simulating an OWS! 2. Helping me go longer without taking a breath. Unlike Mav, I still find it difficult to not breath on every right hand stroke! I am hoping this will also help me go longer without breathing. Does it make sense to do this or am I just fooling myself that this will help? Advice please! Juanita: Enough said about all the "I am not worthy" B.S. We love you and need you here. I truly appreciate all you have added to our group and like Leston, find you an inspiration! Look where you have come in the last 2 - 3 years. You are amazing and we all want you here! Now for my advice (not that you asked!): Start off in a regular gym (or workout) rountine with your new job. We know it will be a challange, but everyone also knows if you take a few weeks off while adjusting to your new work schedule, it will get HARDER AND HARDER to get back into a workout routine! If you start off with it, it is easier to keep going than it is to start again!!!! Get into the routine NOW!!!!! I have my second Tri tomorrow morning (1/2 mile swim; 11 mile bike and 3 mile run). I am a bit concerned about the swim (Lake St. Clair which can be very choppy and the distance!), but more comfortable than I was a couple weeks ago! I will give my race report as soon as I can! Take care and please give me your positive thoughts and prayers tomorrow morning - 7:30am EST! sTRIve on Turtles! Dan |

Dan - go Dan go....the swim will be over before you even get good and wet....left right repeat dude....al the way to your finish line mav - your butt "cracks" me up.....I just couldn't help it.....sorry.....not really....I am so glad you were able to ride "butt" in the future prevention is much easier...I am also glad you are in an early wave so you are not in the "rear"....I know I know, I am a jack"a$$"...LOL....I really am funny. flipper - enough of all that sappy stuff from everyone....rub some dirt in it, take a lap and dive back in....you push my limits in the pool every swim....and like somebody once said in some silly softball movie...."there's not crying in sTRIve...." unless they are tears of accomplishment at a finish line...then they are perfectly accepted....seriously...even if it is a 10 min workout or a one block jog...get something in 4 times a week...don't lose any of what you have gained.....I know it is hot right now but early in the morning is pretty good or in the gym....I swam 6350 yards in three swims this week....a new weekly PR.... Heat - okay...learn from me...I thought I was going to die on Wednesday night....I didn't have the feeling to ride and run so I just went on a long run....it was 75 minutes and I live in Texas and it is July which means HOT....I didn't think it felt that hot but it was above 95 degrees...I don't know if it was 97 or 98 but it was hot, the sun was baking and there was very very little shade on my run. I dropped one water bottle off as I left the neighborhood with about 16 oz in it for it would be there when I returned after about 6.5 miles...I also had a 20 oz bottle with me -- I assure you that the 20 oz went really fast and I was out of water at about 40 minutes leaving about 30 minutes back to the bottle I dropped off. Not only could I have used more water to drink, I could have used a gallon to pour on my head. Don't make this mistake, always carry more than you need. If you have some left, drink it later. It took me about 1.5 hours to cool down even after a dip in the pool and a shower. This was stupid...here's a tip....don't be stupid. Getting up early tomorrow to ride and run while it is "cool" (relatively speaking of course). sTRIve B Edited by left.right.repeat 2008-07-11 8:22 PM |

(Leston, you made my day.) You guys are wonderful. I wasn't looking for sympathy though. I swear. And I'm not feeling sorry for myself. Just stating a fact. Y'all are athletic and I feel a bit self-conscious because I am not. But I shouldn't have said anything. I know how far I've come. It blows me away when I think about it. I honestly still don't understand how I can swim the way I do (please remember though, that I'm still not fast - slow as Christmas). I'll get back to the gym next week. For my sanity if for no other reason. Ouch, Bryan. I can cut my grass outside in these temps WITH frequent breaks, but I sure can't imagine running like that. Yikes. No lingering dehydration issues? Please be careful! sTRIve! |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Race Report: Finish line #33 crossed! :^) Set-up: Missed a couple of workouts this week due to personal life! My daughter and I went up on Friday night to check-out the course and get a feel for what I was going to do (although I live less than 3 miles from the race course for seven years!). I enjoy going over the course a head of time! My son was coming in from Texas on the greyhound bus and was suppose to be in downtown Detroit @ 7:00 pm. Of course, he sent us a message that they were running late and he thought they would be in around 10:00ish. Then he let us know it wouldn't be until around midnight! Well, since it was downtown (about 25 minutes away from us), I couldn't let her go alone! Also, we had a close friend playing in a band at a local bar. About 8:30 we went up to the bar (I only drank water! - Bars aren't much fun if you aren't drinking!), watched them play a couple of sets. We got home about 10:30 and I laid down for a while, he called to say about 12:00 would work, so we left around 11:30, picked them up and got home around 12:50, do I didn't get to bed until 1:00am! I was so tired, I actually slept very quickly and soundly (unlike my first Tri!). Got up at 5:45, at a small bowl of oatmeal and out the door by 6:00 (everything was packed before I went to the bar!). Weather was good - around 70 (that ferinhite for you Sticka!), slightly overcast (threatening rain - but it didn't start until an hour after the race - slightly humid. When I got to the race sight, THE WATER WAS EXTREMELY CHOPPY!!!! No whitecaps, but close (the night before it was very calm!). Swim: 1/2 mile swim - 1/4 straight out, around 4 bouys in a straight line and 1/4 straight back. In the water start. The race was full and all 225 participants started together! This was rediculous - they need to do waves!!! I couldn't find any room to swim. I had a guy in front of me breast stroking and he kicked me 7 or 8 times, I tried to get around him, but there was no room, so I had to slow down a bit. The choppiness of the water was really bad. I swallowed water several times trying to breath, but never really had to stop! About 200m into it, I started feeling the tightness of the wet suit in on my chest, but I was expecting it this time - and swam through it fairly well. I swam the front crawl the entire 1/4 mile out, but was tiring. After I got around the last bouy, I flipped to my back to try and rest and kick only, but the waves would come over my face - that strategy sure didn't work! So I started to breast stroke for a while, then tried to front crawl, but was too tired, so I went back to breast stroke. I ended up breast stroking the majority of the return 1/4! As I exited the water there was a genltman sitting on the beach with EMS attending to him (just like Leston's story! Didn't make me feel very comfortable, but there was nothing I could do, so like everyone else, I continued!). I was tired, but not exhausted like I was after the 500m swim on my first Tri! My wife, daughter and mother were there to cheer me on - what a great feeling! My daughter was telling me my time of 25 min. T1: The transition area was way too small for this many participants. When I got to my area, there the racers on both sides of me were there and I couldn't get to my bike without politely "pushing" my way through! Put on socks, shoes, glasses, helmet and on my way. Not bad - certainly not great, but again a significant improvement over my first one! Bike 11 miles: Mounted, but had difficulty clipping in my shoes! It probably cost me 15 - 25 seconds! Finally got going and the bike felt good! I passed a significant number of people and was only passed by one racer - but remember the better athletes were already on the bike course before I got there! The course was mostly flat, but there were a lot of 90 degree turns and 3 - 360 degree turnarounds throught out the course! It was uneventful except when I almost got hit by a car going in the other direction who swerved to miss a biker going his way and almost hit me! That go my adreneline moving! Also, I would play that game in my mind - try to catch the next person ahead of me! This worked well. T2: Due to the small size transition size, I couldn't even get my bike directly to my spot! I had to go around a group! Got things off pretty well, shoes on and off for the run. On my way out there were spectators directly in the way and I ran directly into a young lady (well I wasn't calling here a lady while I was running!). Run 3 miles: Again a fairly flat course with a lot of right turns, go down a street to a cone, do a 360 degree turn and back to the main road! I was pretty tired by the run and would again run (jog) a few hundred yards, walk about 20 - 30 yards and run again. I was passed by many people during the run :^( .. however, I did take 2 minutes off the my time from my first one! I was jogging at the same pace with a lady for a while and then I started walking while she kept jogging and I was amazed how quickly the amount of space she created between us! I have got tl keep my walking to a minimum! I finished with a decent "sprint" (for me anyway!) for the last 100 yards or so and actually passed 3 people - but couldn't catch the 4th one! End: My wife, daughter and mother were there again and so were all of you! Thanks for all your positive vibes! Overall: I cut 4 minutes off my last time (but distances were slightly different); I didn't like that they did time the transitions separately; but overall it was a good experience and I am glad to have another one under my shrinking belt! Here are my times: Swim: 25.44 Bike: 38.07 Run: 30.21 Overall: 1:34.10 Also interesting, the award cerimony (which I didn't earn!) was at a local bar, so we went in for a burger and beer :^) ... I didn't fell guilty at all since I didn't have any the night before! Here is the website for the results: http://results.active.com/pages/displayNonGru.jsp?orgID=216362&rsID... (I am in the 45 - 49 age group). Thanks for all your help. I don't have another Tri schedule before Chicago (Aug. 24th), so I might try to find one more! Dan Edited by MSUDan 2008-07-12 6:58 PM |

You sound like a proven triathlete working over the rough spots in the race set up. A lot of transition areas are too small - I see it all the time. It really angers me when they have a whole parking lot and use a 10x10 corner for 1000 people. And most race directors race or have in the past. By the way, I would be okay if you don't do another before Chicago...take a couple of days off and then begin to build that base mileage up for Chicago (is it an Olympic?). While we really don't realize it, racing takes a ton out of us. By the way, I have one glass of wine prior to a race, sometimes two but that is it...I think it improves my performance....smile. sTRIve..... by the way again, Mav I can't believe there are no comments about my last post.....LOL. |

Amazing the way these guys can ride !! This morning the first true mountain stage through the Pyrenees is on and teh climbs (and descents) are amazing. They are supposedly hitting 100 kph (60 mph) on some of the descents - YOWSER !!! Got in a good ride yesterday - roughly 90 minutes which I believe was around 40k. I really need to get my bike fitting scheduled though because it wasn't all that comfortable the last half. Suffering today from a tight hamstring that started sometime earlier this week. Probably due to lack of stretching and general flexibility. Last night was a big event here - my daughter Stephanie's 19th birthday. That means she's now of legal age to drink and go out to clubs - SCARY SCARY SCARY. She had a party here at the house and then of course they went out to a local establishment. Quiet day planned for today - perhaps a short run but nothing too strenuous. |

Mav - it must be nice to be independently wealthy and go to the Cape more than the Kennedys....And I will not apologize for incredibly humorous post....everyone else was thinking of all the funny things they could say too....smile. sticka - those dudes in the TdF are amazing....they climbed 2000 meters vertically on one climb today....HOLY CRAP!!!! - that is amazing....Watch those tight muscles....see some info below. Workout today was cool....I rode an hour and then met my daughter at home and we went for a 30 minute run....it was really fun to run with her. There was some fatigue after yesterday's long brick but it was completed. By the way, I got some orthotics yesterday for my running shoes and they are just marvelous....no pain in the achilles after today's workouts.....I will keep you all posted on them. Stretching - I always stretch after I work out not before. I am part of the "don't stretch a cold muscle" club. Now that said, I am not always as thorough as I should be. So like most triathletes I end up with tight leg muscles - calves, hammies and quads especially but also the achilles, outer calf, and even the shin as well as the ever popular IT band. I have become a fan of the foam roller. If you don't have one you should invest in one. They are not very expensive and you just lay on it, get your weight off the floor onto your hands and roll back and forth over the afflicted area on the foam roller. So I lay my left calf on it, cross my right leg over my left for balance and then lift up on my hands so there is weight on that calf muscle. Then I roll it down to my ankle and up to the back of my knee - about 10 or 12 times - it is similar to massage in moving around the lactic acid and breaking up the pockets. sTRIve |
