Sorry for the delay, I've had a really bad last 7 days.  I didn't sleep much in the days before the race.  The marathon was really hilly, windy, and rainy.  I banked in almost 2 minutes of time so that the group can take it up the hills slower, but we had two 2nd half pacers who just didn't care about bleeding off the banked time on the hills, so in the end we came in way too far ahead of pace, like 4:12:58.

We had a couple of wind spots where it was at least 40mph.  Pretty nasty.

The knee that I hurt on the JFK course a couple of weeks ago, is hurting pretty badly and is swollen.  I went to the doc last night and there is no break that they see on the xrays.  Maybe my knee is just swollen from those hills and being hit 2 weeks ago.

Our pace group had one runner from beginning to end.  Another guy fell off at mile 24 or so.  The bulk of the pack fell off around mile 19-20 when we hit the last significant hill.  I think we could've held onto them longer if we took it easy on the hills like I planned.

In the end it's another marathon, which means we are healthy enough to do such things, which is a blessing.

Oh and apparently I am supposed to get free shoes, which is really nice, but the store was closed and I am home now.  I am trying to see if I can get my aunt to pick them up.

Ick.  That doesn't sound like much fun.  Sorry things didn't go as planned and that your knee is a mess.  I'm thinking JFK could be painful.  Rest up and ice lots!!

You deserve those free shoes, I hope you can get them!  Rest and recovery now until jfk.  I hope your knee feels better very soon.
And congrats on another great marathon, it is amazing that you keep on doing them!!  How many is that now?

Thanks!  Yes I am not sure if this is something I can just push through with JFK.  But, there are 3 weeks and I bet this will drop as an issue.  In fact I am supposed to run the Appalachian Trail piece again this weekend if you want to come along.  Roger and some of his family are running as well.  Obviously I will only do this if healed.

I need to remember the ice!  Keep forgetting.  The IBU makes the pain go away and I forget.

That was my 34th marathon.

I guess you're feeling better because you ran the trail yesterday.  :-)
The weather should have been pretty nice for it.

I put a brace on it and that seemed to help.  Still taking IBU, we will see.  Going to take it easy.

Singing up for IMFL Becky is great, what an inspiration.  It will be nice to train and participate with your boyfriend too.  I know someone who completed it this weekend in under 12 hrs. Amazing!

Dave, how was the AT run this weekend? Are you feeling good?

Hi,

Can't say I am "feeling good" but the run was pretty uneventful, and we got through without getting hurt, which seems not such a given out there sometimes!  I'm not really worried about the 50 miler.  You can only do so much, and I've done it.

You type in the text that you want to link, then highlight the text.  Above our text box is a little chain link you click on to make the text a link. Then you paste the URL in the top line and it's done.  I had trouble with it too at first but once you realize it, it's pretty easy.

Aren't they nearing sellout, or already exceeded?  Are you signed up already?

Yes, they are nearing sellout and I am signed up! I am excited!

Dave, what is your estimate on your finish time for JFK?  What time does it (you) start?  Are there waves for it? Are you going to run the trail portion with another person?  Do you have people that are going to supply you with nutrition along the course?

I am intrigued by strategies of the untras. Absolutely amazing!

Excellent.

I don't care what time I finish JFK.  At one point I thought 10-10.5 hours but my knee is an issue and I could end up not finishing at all.  I start at 7am.  You can submit a waiver to start at 5am but we are too fast for them to approve us.  We have til 7pm to finish.  Originally Roger and I were going to run the first X miles together but we are finding that I am much more adventurous and willing to risk it on the rocks of the trail.  Thus I think I will be way ahead of him, and on the C&O he could come up and pass me.  We were hoping to have supporters out there so we could change clothes and shoes, and well as some food stuff but all those who expressed interest have fallen to the wayside.  We may be on our own.  We'll see.  This week is the week to solidify those who bluffed their interest.

The Herald Mail newspaper is featuring an article about a different JFK runner every day this week.  They are really interesting.  Also, youtube has some good videos of people doing this race.  It appears to be a relaxed and layed back kind of atmosphere.  You can find the Herald Mail newspaper online at www.heraldmail.com .....Dave you will do great, what is your bib # in case I cheer people on around Taylors Landing or Downsville?

Thanks for the link!  Wow, those two runners featured so far do not have much of a training program.  The one guy's big race was a half marathon last month?

If they like accident stories, they'd probably like my "run over by a truck" story but it is too late for that.

Looks like I am #339.  Roger, the one who said "go Linda!" at the Baltimore Marathon, is #337.

Yes my impression of the JFK50 is that it is laid back as well.  The goal for everyone is not to crush a PR, but to help each other finish.

My ability to finish is solely on the knee.  I am planning on wearing a Cho Pat brace in the hopes that it can keep my kneecap tracking correctly.  Otherwise I am dead meat.  I am going to really do nothing knee-related this week.  Even the elliptical, and a hike, bothered it.

Good luck, Dave!  I've slacked on the mentor thread recently, but I hope your knee holds out and that you have a great time.  We were considering coming to cheer some, but we are going to be out of town on short notice (see J's log).  I'm excited to hear how it goes.
