Thomasski - 2010-05-01 4:42 PM Well today has been a good day. I did do just as I expected... 1:45ish for the half mary. Was able to snag two beers during the run from specators. And I have exceeded my expectations of 13 drinks after the half. I think I am somewhere in the 18 range. But I feel great. Lots of gatorade and bratwurst. The funny thing is... this same race last year when I was training for a boston qual time I ran my fastest half marathon ever... only to blow out after trying to use the bathroom and ended up with a 415 for the marathon. Carl with a C... good job on your du today.

Super cool - any race when you can get beer during it is worth doing.  I have done a few of those w/ xc skis, very fun! I wonder if you can do that as a fartleg(?). 1 beer/1gatorade 2beers/2gatorade .....  hahaha...

Carl, Robin, Dan congrats to all of you.

Dan nice splits. Looks like you were able to hold your pace. Great job. First split shows your fight with the crowd

Hearing such good results from my fellow groupies feels nice indeed.

dcon - 2010-05-01 6:26 PM I ran a 10k on Thursday - my first since 2001.   I ended up doing 49:00 and think that could have been 48:00 (which is my PR at 10k) if there hadn't been so many people to fight through at the start of the race.   Unfortunately, they lined people up by age and the 50+ group ended up behind about 1000 50- folks.    I was quite satisfied with the race.   I ended up getting a great set of heart rate data and was pleasantly surprised with my splits for the second half of the race (graph attached below - did this using SportTracks which is a nice piece of freeware).

?

Great job - those splits are awesome. When I first saw them I thought they were in min/mi and I said holy #$%@! Still awesomes though!  Congrats on the PR!

I thought the same thing about the splits in miles/minutes.  Regardless, thats a pretty good time for the 10k.

Sounds like others had some good racing this weekend too.  I am going to run my half next weekend and toward the end of the races teres a small table where some people give out beer but I won't indulge.  I'm not much of a drinker.  Maybe 12 beers a year.

Robin, nice race.  Don't wory about your times compared to other people other than to help gain confidence that you're getting faster.  Theres always someone out there faster than anyone, but theres always someone out there slower too.  I am not sure how long you have been at this but it all comes with time.

Carl, nice podium.  One of these days I would like to be there too but my age group seems to be very competitive.  No matter I'll just enjoy the racing and seeing my own times improve.

Thanks guys!

Well today was supposed to be a local 10k that I only paid $16 for!  But due to my carelessness I had it burned into my brain that the race started at 11:30 when as I was checking the website at 8:42 that the 10k starts at 8:40.  Ooops...

I guess the good thing is that I only lost $16 as opposed to what is normally charged for race fees.

jpbis26 - 2010-05-01 7:02 PM Good job everyone on your races.

Thomas- Man, you make me miss my younger days. I remember when I could drink like that (I drink more than a couple beers now and I'm falling asleep). Glad you are having fun.

Robin- Congrats on breaking 30! What an accomplishment. I still have yet to do that, so you are NOT slow IMHO.

Update on me: I've been a little sick the past 3 days, so I haven't been training (which annoys me, I don't like to see empty days on my training log). But luckily I woke up feeling good today so I was able to run my 5k. I finished in 32:25 which is good for me (my last one was 33:24). I'm still trying to break 30, I know I just gotta run more often & for longer distances.

So, anyhow. I feel like I'm just creeping along with my weight loss. I still have to lose about 20lbs to get to my goal weight of 145, and I'm fighting for every pound. Only taking off less than 1 lb a week at this point. It's a little frustrating because I've got all these clothes that almost fit me, but I'm just gonna stay the course because I know all those little 1 lb losses will add up. But, the cool thing is I got a compliment this morning. The person said, "Wow, I can't believe you just had a baby and you look like that." I found it amusing since 1) my baby is 8 months old, so didn't just have her & 2) I'm so not at my ideal weight. But, I'm not gonna argue. I'll take the compliment

I tried responding last night but for some reason it didn't post. So, here is a second stab at it.

I know exactly where you are coming from.  I have been trying to lose the last 5-10 pounds for 2 years now!  I will lose the weight during the week only to gain it back on the weekends. Very frustrating, but I enjoy my weekends. Only losing a pound or less a week is a great way to do it though.  You are more likely to keep it off by not underindulging and being too strict which is set up for failure. That is still 3-4 pounds a month! Also you have to remember muscle weighs more than fat!!!!  Once your baby gets older (I assume that is her in the pic - very cute!!!) it will get easier. Mine are now 4 & 6 and are both in school and somewhat independent.  Also, don't feel bad in having your husband or another family member/friend watch her so you can get some exercise- in the long run it is great for everyone since you will be in a better mood!

Anyways, keep it up - it sounds like your a doing exactly the right things.  I am always surprised the things I can do if I want it bad enough.

Thanks to all who congratulated me on my 5k! I appreciate the encouragement and it wants me to continue to work hard!

I am thinking about another 5k run in a few weeks and it would be awesome to drop some more time.  The only problem with 5k's is that I am more of a long distance person. By the time I start feeling my stride and getting my HR under control it is time to pick it up again for the final push.  No time to get that good humming feeling in my head! Anyone else feel that way?

I still have another 6 weeks before my first sprint tri.

tri808 - 2010-05-01 5:11 AM Went to home depot and found a similar tubing to what comes with the PD aero drink...only it's more flexible.  I think it will work good.  I hangs a little limp...so it can't stab me in the throat...yet easy enough to reach for and shove in my mouth.  I also got the shower poof ball...and it works like a charm.  At first I thought it had to stick out the top...but now I realize it just sits in that upper fat part of the bottle...and won't fall to the bottom.  I shook the thing like crazy...and the only water that came out was out of the straw.

I might try the same thing...but the way mine sits right now, it's out in front of my face....like it would hit me in the forehead if I put my head down, so I may just cut the tubes shorter...but then again they may be a pain to reach my mouth after that.  I'm going to go with the shower ball also.  Did you try pouring water through it, into the aero bottle?  If you shake it like crazy and no water comes out, then how is it supposed to go in?

I think you're like me and have the wrong mental picture.  Originally, I thought that the poof ball needed to stick out the top...like physically, you would see the poof ball coming out of the black hole where you would refill the bottle.  That's not the case.  The poof ball sits 100% inside the bottle, and you can't see it at all.  But because of the shape of the bottle...where it has a fat compartment at the top...the poof ball stays nice and tight at the top and can't move around.  You then put the black foam thingy and the plastic cap on to cover the bottle.  So the poof ball is stuck at the top, and prevents anything from splashing out the black foam...but you can still shove the tip of a bottle through the foam and refill.

Buy the poof ball ($1.50) and shove it in there...you'll understand when you see it.

As for the straw...I experimented with both...having it poke my forehead or my throat...then I cut the straw...and then it became too difficult to drink from without having to tilt my head down and take my eyst completely off the road...hence the longer...but limper extension from home depot...

OH!  Gotcha.  I'm all over it.  I was wondering how the hell that was actually working for people.  My buddy didn't tell me to do that!

Thanks!

As far as your stroke count, try going slow and really feeling the glide.  This is important because it will give you a sense of what makes you more streamlined.  For example, when you push off the wall, you can change your body position, hand position, etc to make yourself go farther, right?  So when you take a single stroke, I want you to count to three.  This may be hard to do at first, but it helped me a ton.  Really push with your stroke hand and fire forward, straight ahead with your other hand.  Hold it for three and do the next arm.  I did this exercise, changing my hand and head position in the water to see what made me more streamlined and it helped.

Thank you everyone. Thank your from the bottom of my heart. You gave me a new motivation and a TON of ideas to work on.

Just a quick question Jonathan. When should I begin counting? With the start of my stroke (catch) I presume?

I will keep you all posted about my swimming adventures. Thank you again.

Yup...so you grab the water and pull through the stroke (one), glide with one arm in front (two, three), then start the next stroke.

Thomaski: Awesome 1:45 half mary and putting down a few beers to boot! Rockstar!

Robin: Congrats on breaking 30 min 5k

Dcon: Great job on your 10k.

Sounds like everyone had a stellar week of racing/training. I on the other hand am recovering from my best friends bachlorette party. I was supposed to do a 60 mile bike ride.....um, yeah....not so much.

Thanks Robin!
You definately gave me some more confidence that I can break 30 minutes if I put in the training time and gradual add more distance and more days.
Also glad I'm not the only one struggling with weight loss after having a baby. I have 3 kids (ages 4, 2, and 8 months) and it just seems to get harder & harder to lose the weight after each one. I was down to 156lbs before my last pregnancy and now I kinda feel like I'm back at square one again. But, hopefully I am gaining some muscle with the training and am doing better than the scale is showing.
Glad things will get easier as they get older. I figure I'll be able to be really competitve when I'm in my late 50s & have time to train like I want to.

all,

first to everyone that raced, nice job!

carl, sounds like you either bent a link or didn't get the pin seated right. next time dont try to take the chain off;-) no need.

I personally just run some new lube on it and then through a paper towel, keeps it in good working order and gets me trhough a season or so of riding.

My tri season starts next sat with the devilman half lite (.85 mi swim/40 mi bike/8.8 mi run). should be a fun and fast race, but HOT if the sun is out. the entire run is 100% exposed to the sun.

"half light"...sounds like a beer or something.

But I like the distances...somehow 40 miles on the bike followed by 8.8 miles running seems much more doable than 56/13.1

haha yeah the name is lame,

but it just means having to go faster. something tells me this is going to turn out to be a NASTY distance to race. I would really like a top 5 overall placing/think i am capable of this if things go well, but its gonna hurt, because its sort of like a longer race in the distances, but time was is half way between a half and olympic so room to go faster without as much worry of falling apart.
we'll see i guess.

Yeah, I completely agree.  I'm up to 4.5 miles for my "long run" of the week now.  My calves are still a bit sore after, but nothing a bit of ice can't solve.  I'm going to continue to add about a .5 mile a week until my half.  That should get me there in one piece.

As for the biking....I've been really enjoying our long weekend rides.  But on Saturday, my legs and body felt like absolute crap after about 10 miles or so.  I've never been so unhappy to be on my bike in my life.  I have no idea what was going on.  I haven't slept well in about a week, but that's happened before too.  I'm glad it's over with and can only hope it doesn't happen like that in a race.

Exploring a new distance is always fun.  You can probably assume that lots of other competitors have never raced such a distance before and use it to your advantage.

agreed, and this is a distance very well suited to my strengths righ now with the longer bike and run and a faster swim distance. if i can do 23+ and sub 7s on the run, it will be a good day.

Dang!  That is cruising.  I ran 7s at my du yesterday and averaged 20.5 on the bike over 12miles.  I was extremely happy with that performance, but I need to really improve my bike if I want to go 3hrs on the bike leg of my HIM.

I just discovered why my bike was making a rubbing sound.  I decided to look at my bike from the left side and spin the crank which revealed that my crank arm was rubbing against my brake since my quick release was open.  Since my bike is a Felt, the rear brake is well within reach of my crank arm.  I'm very relieved that I don't have to make a trip to the lbs and give up my bike.

I was browsing a different forum and just found out about the centering screws on brake calipers.  Tomorrow I'll play with them but I am always having to constantly center my brake calipers by hand to keep them from rubbing.  They occasionally get bumped around when I take tires off and etc.

Does anybody know if a little extra psi in a tire would cause it to expand enough to make it harder to slide in and out of the brake?  My tire doesn't seems to slide freely from my front brake upon removal and I'm wondering if I just filled it 5psi or so more than normal.

that should not change it at all (that little PSI)

if you need to remove it just open the calipers a bit more. if that still wont do it, you may just have a bigger tire/tighter brake tollerence.

So I am normally not a ranter or whatever but today I will be. I went on my nice recovery ride this morning and had an awesome time. I was a mile from home when I was run off the road at an intersection. I almost hit a car that was waiting to turn right and was able to pop up onto the curb and thankfully hit a bush before the building. So I got on my bike and raced up to the next intersection where the car that ran me off was stopped. It just so happens that this same intersection is in front of the police station. I got off my bike and yelled for the guy to roll his window down so I could let him know what he had just done. He locks his car in the intersection and calls the cops on me. They almost arrested me because this guy was some sort of village chairman and he said I threatened him. But the cops let me go and didnt even give the guy a ticket even when the person driving behind us told the cops what had  happened. Ok rant done.

But on a good note my ride was excellent. I found that 'special' gear where I could just sit back at a 100 cadence, 19-20mph and felt great the whole ride.
And today I will be starting a training log.

As far as tapering...assuming a hard training cycle...how much do you taper for your triathlons.

I would assume that it may be more important to taper off the running compared to swimming and biking because running is so high impact.

I have a sprint coming up this weekend, the 8th...which is like a C race for me, an Olympic on the 16th which is my A race.

I was thinking of Keeping my normal routine this week...but cutting down my run and bike on Thursday...complete rest Friday...then the Sprint on Saturday.

Rest Sunday, then my normal routine of workouts on Monday, Tues, Wed, Thurs...but decreasing the volume of each workout.  Complete rest Friday and Saturday.  Olympic on Sunday.

Is that enough rest/taper.  For my first Sprint back in March, I cut down my workout on Friday, rest Saturday, then raced Sunday and felt okay...but had nothing to compare to.
