Hi all - hope everyone had a great weekend!  I did.  The metric went really well.  My avg mph was about 2 mph more than usual.  Not sure why it went so well, but I'll take it.  With the nice pace, we were finished before noon...before the heat  Then it was off to the lake on Sunday to relax.  Of course I had to get in an OWS

Wow +2mph is awesome!!  Congratulations!

Ok, going to sign up for the South Shore Tri on 7/31.  Training has totally slacked in July and I am feeling down about it.  So debating today whether to do the sprint or super-sprint.

Congrats on your Metric Carla!!

Ryan -- bite the bullet and go for the sprint.  I'd ask myself, can I run a 5K right now comfortably? If not, perhaps the super sprint, but you may be disappointed if you don't just go for it...jumping back on the horse so to speak. Just my 2-cents.

Yes! It's like being asked, "One scoop or two?" The right answer is always ...

THREE!!!

I'm kidding (well, not really), but I'm with Lynn--you should go for the sprint. Worst case scenario (okay, worst-case REALISTIC scenario) is you still can't train for it much, but you do it nice and slow, and it's a long training day, and you have a blast!!!

Unfortunately, I got eaten by a jellyfish during my OWS today ...

when I got out of the ocean, my sister was like, "Cool! It looks like it tried to strangle you!"

Giant blistery painful blotches on the entire left side of my neck, across, and some spots on the right.

EWWWWWWW

i can't wait to bike and run tomorrow to see how sweat feels on it!

Ouch! Siblings are so thoughtful aren't they?
I have no idea how sweat will feel   Did you apply vinegar or really hot water to them?

Oh yeah. She poked the sting with her finger and I screamed so loud she ran away because she didn't want to be seen with me. Just desserts!

Vinegar, no, just really hot water. Blech. Fresh, hot water feels BAD on a sting ... but it does get the nematocysts off.

Oh, that is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it!!!!!

I've been drafted by a shark. I've grabbed a sea snake. I've had a fish bite my lip. But this, so far, is definitely the worst.

Yanti, I hope you are feeling better today.

Thanks all for the input on my swimming headaches.  I got a lycra swim cap (horrible for competition!!) which was much less pressure on my giant noggin and VIOLA!  no more headaches.  I hated my latex cap anyhow and think I will get a silicone cap at some point.

Hope everyone has a great day.  I am gearing up for a 1 hour ride in the heat.  Need to practice my hills and no shade options.

I prefer training with a lycra cap as my head does not blow off from heat (it blows off, apparently, from hungry sea animals!) Good for you!

Training in heat = wet Tshirt contest. Douse yourself with water!!!

And thank you Ms. Sharktopus ... yes, indeed my bite is much better, that is, it's dried up and scabbed over. It got pretty gross and painful again during my own sweaty ride (and helmet strap, grrr) but it's ages better than it was yesterday.

Glad to hear that your swimming headache problem was solved.  That's a relief and relatively easy solution thankfully.
Yanti - I will try to refrain from any wet tshirt comments since I am the token male in this room
But I am glad to hear that your pain has subsided at least a little bit.  I went for a run last night and I am hopefully going to hit the pool tonight.  It looks like it might rain for the first time in quite some time here so that forces me back to the gym pool.

Ow, ouch, owie -- jellyfish. Glad you're okay. We've had over 100 bat ray stings here in the past week. And, some new black, exotic type of jellies here. ??

Oh, yeah, the swimcap...I had that issue once. Glad you figured it out.

Run, Ryan, run!!

It sounds like some of you especially Yanti and Lynn have very interesting animal encounters while swimming. Usually Lake Michigan is so murky I cannot see much...not that I would necessarily want to see a 2-headed fish Tongue out

Swim, Lynn, Swim!
It looks like you have a full Vineman AquaBike coming up on 7/31. That's awesome that you're so dedicated. And that's one heck of a long swim and bike!
Good luck in your last 1.5 weeks of training/tapering.

Jellyfish sting are not fun.  I had to crack up at a fish biting your lip...sure it wasn't trying to kiss you?!?!

Exotic black jellies and 2 headed monsters and sharks drafting...now that I'm all scared, I'll be sticking with the pool!

It's been in the upper 90s with no rain here for awhile.  It's nice at the lake on the weekends, but it's torture in the afternoons trying to ride.

I can't decide whether or not to do another full mary in March.  I'll do the 1/2 for sure, but the jury is still out on the full.  Any thoughts??

And lastly, I just made the yummiest smoothie...and I have no straw.  Daaaaaang!

I hope you're surviving the heat ok Carla.  It has been unusally warm here in Chicago too in July but has cooled off the past few days a bit. It has been consistently in the 90s here.
Unfortunately I probably cannot offer good advice on which race to sign up for.  I remember that you did the full mary in March of this year.  So you could easily set a goal of beating your time from this year and that will help motivate you to train throughout the winter.
Have you ever done a 1/2 Mary before?
And hopefully you were able to devour your smoothie even without a straw!  I had one last night after my workout.

Oh and I am now officially signed up for the South Shore Sprint Tri on 7/31.  Finally I get to race this year...grrr!  And now I have 3 tris in 5 weeks

Allison - Are you going to join me racing down there next week???  Would love to see you out on the course.  If you do here is a code that they gave me although the message with it was a bit confusing.  Either you or I get $5 off.  If you use it and I get $5 then I'll buy you a snack after the race   Code = CFAF784E8FD3

Q - You're welcome to come on down with your cowbell too.  I need to get one of those for my wife...I know she's wanted one for awhile now that she has seen others at my races with them.

YEAH Ryan!!  Allison, I hope you can join him

Now <I> want a cow bell

I agree, the heat has been something else lately.  Since I can only get to the pool between 11-1 (that's when the lap lanes are open) it's a for my bricks.  But it's building endurance and character, right?  RIGHT??

Friday is going to be my big hurrah workout.  Plan to do an entire sprint tri.  Not for time, but for my own peace of mind, you know? Then I am going to get a pedicure The lifeguards and kids at the pool have been so awesome.  The kids will take kick boards and make wake for me and the lifeguards will get in and swim SUPER close to help me imitate an OWS.  I know it's not the same, but it makes me smile and we all enjoy it.

Hope everyone's having a great week.  It's hump day, Manatees!
