QOTD:  Music...

Who listens during workouts?

What are you listening to during workouts?  Not your favorite music, your favorite workout music!!  For me they are quite different...

List your Top 5 workout songs...

I am looking for a few upbeat songs to add to my "exercise playlist".  No Brittany Spears or Justin Bieber, pleae!!  I am old!

iPod,  I listen during all gym workouts, except spin class.  Listen while running outside.  Don't bike outside with earphones.  The drivers are crazy!!

I usually listen to Classic Rock & blues & listen to much of this during workouts.  However, it is often too slow.

My new favorites, that i skip to, when I need a peppy song to boost me are...

1. Highway to Hell - AC/DC

2. Let there Be Rock - AC/DC

3. Kickstart my Heart - Motley Crue (got that one from Spin class)

4. Paradise - City GNR

5. Sweet Child of Mine - GNR

I don't tolerate these songs at home , etc., but when I run, I like'em LOUD!!!

QTOD Music:

I doubt I'll do much in the way of suggestions because I listen to a lot of obscure bands, and lately I've noticed I can enjoy working out to some rather mellow-ish music as long as the high-energy stuff is mixed in. Weird. Depends on the song. The mellower ones aren't making it into the Top 5 though.

[current] Top 5 Workout Songs (in no particular order):

Codeine by Trampled by Turtles
I Love Pop Music by Ben Lee
A Jingle For The Product by Dillinger4
Seeing Double at the Triple Rock by NOFX
A Bottle of Buckie by Ted Leo

I listen to music when I'm cycling or running at the gym, but outside I enjoy just meditating on my breath. Besides, outside headphones don't seem to stay in my ears and they annoy the living P*** out of me! LOL

Oh, and these are all artists I listen to extensively when not working out as well. I'm sure there is stuff I'd only listen to during a workout (like Justin Beiber! LOL) but I reserve that for the Body Pump classes at the Y.

I love listening to music when I workout!  It really helps me set and keep my pace, which makes it more difficult for me when they are not permitted on race day.  I listen to music when I bike indoors, but for safety purposes I usually do not listen while biking (In safer locations I have used one ear bud before).

The music must definitely be loud, and here are some of my favorites that are on my Ipod right now:

1. Black Eyed Peas

2. Eminem - Lose Yourself (great motivational song!)

3. Kanye West - Stronger

4. Run this Town - Rihanna

5. Gave Up - Nine Inch Nails (along with many other songs off of the Broken CD)

Those are just some of my favorites.  I would listen to them at home too.  I listen to a very eclectic mix, but these ones can keep me running for a long time.

I finally went to a Sports Medicine Orthopedic doc today. The good news is that I do not have stress fractures in my legs, but I do have to take another 3 week break from impact workouts. She said that if I kept going then they would definitely turn into a full fledged fracture. Three weeks is much better than 3-6 months. I got some great taping techniques, but now I have to shave my legsSmile  Also, I have to head out tomorrow and buy some orthodics for my shoes.

QOTD: Related to bike maintenance today inspired by some peeps in my computrainer class that bought new bikes and had no idea how to maintain them. How often do you oil your chain and go over your bike to check every in good working order?

Is this a trick question?  Since I have a new bike, I will be doing this very routinely.  Actually, I was pretty thorough with my old mountain bike too.  During the summer I will pull it out all of the time to go over evrything.

What kind of chain oil/wax do you use?

LOL...nope! not a trick question. You'd be surprised how many people don't take care of things or don't know how to.

I use this: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/CM707A03-White+Lightning+Cle...

doesn't mean it's the right lube or the only lube, but this works well for me. I guess we should ask another QOTD about how is the proper way to lube the chain too?

That's exactly what I use, and I have always been happy with it.  Just bought a new bottle last week.  How many miles do you ride until you reapply?

I'd say 100-150. I usually do it after every 3 rides if I can. Seems to keep things nice and smooth.

No worries Sarah, it's pretty easy. Here's what you'll need:
-chain lube
-paper towels
-old rag, bath towel or hand towel

Step 1- Mark a spot on your chain to start and end at. I use the quicklink if you have one.
Step 2- use chain lube pouring/spraying it on the top/center of each link while holding a paper towel underneath it and spinning the chain backward till you have lubed each link and come back to the spot you marked where you started.
Note: You don't have to soak the links so the lube is dripping off just enough to wet the link.
Step 3- Let soak for about 5 minutes
Step 4- Spin the crank backwards several times and hold the chain with the towel to remove excess oil

As always!: be careful not to get your fingers caught in the chain while you are spinning it!!

I also like to use this as an opportunity to clean up my bikes. I use a detailer spray like Honda Polish, Meguire's detail spray, etc. to spray and wipe the bike. I find cleaning it up forces me to look at everything and make sure things are tightened down, and nothing is broken. Look at the condition of your cables, shifters, tires, pedals and other components.

I know this is kind of basic, but I know that there are a lot of people that don't think of these things. Take care of your bike and it will take care of you! The worst thing that can happen is a poorly maintained bike breaks down on you several miles from home. Nobody likes to do the walk of shame for several hours to get home!

Of course you could always use Erin's method and get your significant other to do it! LOL I don't think she's the only one using that method either!!!! LOL

I listen to the Stray Cats Greatest Hits when I run.  It is perfect.  I always listen to the whole album.  When it is over,  if I am still running, that is a good run.

I don't care if I get to be the best Triathlete in the world.  My legs are staying hairy.  I will be the hairiest one out there.  I don't even like shaving my face and if I didn't have to, I wouldn't.  Luckily I don't have to shave my head.  Mother nature took care of most of that for me.  Ha ha

I had to shave my legs tonight, and it definitely has nothing to do with being the best triathlete out there.  Have you ever taped your legs when they were full of hair.  It is definitely not a pretty sight.  When you get shin splints you will do whatever you have to just to be able to run again.  There's nothing about a triathlete that is a pretty sight.  I have found that I will do anything to overcome an injury.  My goal this year is to complete an International Distance tri, and I will be damned if a little hair is going to get in my way of accomplishing this goal...
