Subject: RE: tri808's Spring Pot Luck (CLOSED)

Great to hear about everyone's running.  As for myself, in the middle of my 9 mile run on Sunday, I did a race pace test for about 4 miles.  This was to guage what kind of pace I could hold next Monday for my 8.15 mile race.  I held about 7:45, so without too much effort, so I think that's what I'll shoot for.  I have a couple friendly bets with co workers that I'll break 1:04...so that's my goal.

Dirk...glad the shoulder is feeling better.

I also had a great swim last night.  Our masters coach got caught in traffic, so I ended up doing about 1500 before he even got to the pool.  Then he decided he would make us do 100 yd sprints on fairly long rest.  I went about 80-85% the first one, and clocked 1:18...tying my personal best that I set last week.  It's just too bad my arms started to fatigue after that (possibly due to the long warmup) and I couldn't come close to that again...but was mainly holding 1:21-1:27 the rest of the sets.

I'm really happy with the speed improvements I've made...I just need to work on holding that speed.  I can feel my arms gassing out...but not nearly as fast as they used to.  Just more time in the pool I suppose.  Or maybe I need to start doing some PUSHUPS!!!

I was on the way out the door tonight for my 5 mile run and my wife gets the call that my daughter has a flat tire on the other side of town.  Obviously I canceled my run and helped my daughter but I missed the run.  It was actually kind of fun because I didn't really change the tire, I taught her how to do it for herself.    It wasn't fun because I didn't do anything but because we laughed about it some and messed around a little.  She had never done it before and I needed to know she would be able to take of it the next time if I am not around.

Tonight wasn't a loss because I got to teach my daughter something and spend a little more time with her laughing and joking around.

Dirk...now your daughter can't call you in the event of a flat tire that may cancel your run in the future...LOL.  But good job letting her learn for herself.

I had a great interval ride today.  Not sure where some of those power surges came from...but I suppose all those interval rides and JorgeM workouts over the past 2 months are finally paying off.

I have to say great job on getting her to learn, I have helped many young women stranded on the side of the road crying and not knowing what to do with a flat tire, which shocked me at first because I figured everyone knew...

My legs are about done, worked out with my trainer on monday and it was first time we weren't concerned with increasing pushups/pullups and worked my legs, then I rode last night and can feel it everywhere...  Moving my long swim to later in the week instead of this morning, riding around at work is going to be interesting enough

question.
how do I handle night/morning workouts?
I ran 6miles last night and didn't feel like running again this morning, it happens quite often, problem is, I won't have time to train later today, so do I lose the day? or how do I schedule this? sometimes I just HTFU but I am afraid of an overload...

Hamlet...I struggled with this before, and it's basically and adaptation.  The more frequently you run, the easier it gets.  When I moved from 4x per week running to 6x, it became much easier.  Just understand that the feeling you're having is normal.  Your body is used to having more recovery time.

I would suggest starting out conservative.  If you're going to do more of these evening/morning runs, make each one shorter or less intensity so your body can get used to it.

so should I try to make the 2nd workout shorter/easier? when I do this I usually make the 2nd workout a kind of recovery run. should I keep it that way?

yeah...that's the idea.  As your body gets more accustomed to it, you can go longer/harder on the second.

I got my 5 mile run in tonight but not without incident.  I was just over the 2 mile mark and a dog ran from a field and bit my right calf.  I have 3 puncture wounds but only one is much of anything to speak of and it won't stop bleeding.  It's not bleeding badly just kind of a very light trickle, just enough to not be able to go without a band-aid because there would be blood spots all over the furniture.  The biggest wound might require 1-2 stitches according to my wife (I say 1 at the most) but I will not be going through all of that for 1 stitch in my leg.

I spoke to the dogs owner and told her I don't want to see her dog hurt or anything but if the dog comes after me again I will not care what happens to it.  I didn't tell her but I can say for sure that if it comes again I will beat it to death with a stick or whatever I can find.  The lady was very apologetic and I believe genuinely sorry it happened (not just because she was the owner) and told me she would be getting rid of the dog.  I told her to just make sure it can't get out of the yard again and that would be fine with me.  I even made suggestions to her to make sure that can happen but she assured me she won't be taking chances.  The dog came from about 100 yards away to bite me so the owner can do something to ensure this isn't going to happen anymore.

Enough of my drama.

Melanie, good job on the run and congrats on the tigger like feeling you are experiencing right now.  Would you call it a runners high kind of feeling?

Hamlet,  J is right about the increased distances or same day runs.  I haven't done any two-a-days for the run but I have done a few bigger runs on back to back days that weren't 24 hours apart and if they aren't done correctly than you would be asking for an injury.

Sorry about the dog bite, I hope that your leg is OK.  Sorry for not posting in awhile.  Training is going well I am in week 3 of both the Hal higdon training and BG triathlete training.  Feeling good, but my legs are sore sometimes.
I stopped the weights for a little bit and will be doing push ups and sit ups instead.
Have a great Thursday everybody!

Wow that dog sucks. Very kind of you to give her a chance to make it right instead of pressing charges.

If anyone is interested in a size large Giro Advantage 2 aero helmet, let me know.  Never used, but has a very small ding on the top that you can barely see.  Blue/Black color scheme.  Box it came is is a bit beat up.  Got it from another BTer who said she got it as a demo from an expo.  I never used it because it was a size too big.

Going to put this in the classifieds if nobody bites.  Mentor group price is $75 shipped.

FYI, I'm also in another group and will also post there...so PM me if interested.

Did a couple spin classes today, the first was an hour and we stayed in the saddle the whole class. It was good to test my cadence and have ride that resembles a outdoor ride. The second class had lots of intervals with a 11 min hill climb at the end with my heart rate hitting 172.

My legs have been tight lately, they feel like they are full of pressure. Has anyone had this happen to them? I can still work out and push it but I hit a wall and can't push through it. It has been happening with the bike and the run. Could I be low on electrolites? I haven't been drinking gatoraide like I use to, I was drinking 32 oz a day. Way to much sugar, overall training is going good.

man am I a slacker...
nothing today, nothing yesterday except strength stuff on both days. only good I see out of it is that I had a tightish achilles, it better be better now cause I ain't giving it more rest anymore.

I put the bike up for sale....
I think I could regret it, but several things pushed me to this decision. like a friend says, '' a bad step one has to take''. will focus on running for a few months, get my times down and be consistent cause ''I'll be back''.
so technically I am not a 'triathlete' anymore. can I still post.? :P

@Dirk. thats crazy about the dog. once something similar happened to me and I kicked the dog till it ran away. I didn't even know where it came from and looked a bit like a stray dog so I bite could be more than just that. I think it was very nice of you to handle it that way.
