For us midwesterners how did you deal with the heat/humidity yesterday?  Had my 1st run with 80%+ humidity with 75deg temps.  This is going to take some time to get used to again, today they are calling for 82deg today.   Lucky that knoxville is supposed to cool down for sunday, today 90 sunday 76..

IceManScott - 2011-05-11 9:24 AM Icing my leg.  Arrgh.  Sat at work all day yesterday, walked to the truck and felt the start of a shin split.  Iced, biked, all good, then came back ....not a lot.  Just sore.  Crap.

Just baby it we have a long way to go until race day, no need to have an injury that lasts months.

I went out around 1:00 for a 1 hour speed workout.  Got in 7+ miles.  It was sure hot and humid.  Drank a lot before and after.  With my IM in Louisville in August I need to train in this  as much as possible.

Funny story about my run.  I have been trying to enjoy my runs and be lighter on my feet as well as look like I enjoy it more.  At around mile 6.5 as I ran into my neighborhood, a construction worker looked at me from his truck and yelled, "Run Forest, run!"  I am hoping it was due to seeing a smiling runner, not some other similarity to his running style.

Thanks, Coach and KC!  I was able to do a quick 3 mile run followed by a short 500 yard swim.  My body is not feeling 100% due to the injections, and being so close to the race, I figured I'd just keep the maintenance up.  My plan also calls for a light week this week.

It's funny.  I'm just noticing this.  My plan calls for a 20 min run, 20 min swim, and 20 mile bike on the last two days.  Usually it would give a minimum distance.  Smart plan, eh?

I can't help much on the kicking, KC.  Whenever my legs start cramping up in the pool, I stop kicking altogether, and do what coach suggested a while back - burn out your arms!

Coach - I love the heat and humidity so for the most part it does not bother me. I just make sure I take in fluids I guess. I like it so much, that the last time I was in Jamaica (I went in July) temps were about 100 and humidity was not far behind. I would teach resort guests and juniors for 2 hours in the morning and then walk 18 holes in the heat of the day. Even the Caddy asked me if it would be ok if he got a cart - I still walked LOL.

Brian - Take the "Run Forest Run" comment as a compliment - he did run across the country a few times non stop right?

I melt.  So I invested in TYR's new carbon based material for tops and shorts.  Wore it on the trainer last night.  Unbelievable stuff if it works that way outside.  Wicks so well I stayed cool though I sweated.  Touched the outer side of the jersey and it actually felt dry.  If it works that way outside, wow. pricey though.  Look for deals.  And they only have tight fitting XL.  It is like a second skin on me but feels nearly naked   Love that!

So today is an easy run--30 minutes and a swim ( I am thinking 200WU; 2 x 550; 200 CD).

I di a hour ride last night and it felt good. Just need to check the weather for Sunday.

Yes KC changing your stroke will change your kick which is probably why your leg muscles feel it.

Hope everyone has a good training day Cool

I got a ride in early at 5:30am and then swam this morning so I haven't had to deal with it yet.  I hate humidity so this completely skipping spring is not making me too happy.

Missed a workout last night (family 'stuff'). Of course it would be a bike one. I'm planning on doing it tonight instead, but also seriously considering emailing the RD of the HIM and asking for a sprint spot. :-(

You can still do it!!!  Is it a hilly course?  If it's pretty flat you could get through it.

IT band - I feel your pain.  Icing what I guess is a shin splint but I have no idea when it happened. ALl good after my workouts Saturday and Sunday, didn't do anything Monday for a rest day and then bang, after work walking to the truck and it starts up.  So sucks.  Supposed to run tonight.  Might be a easy recovery bike ride to bet it warm and get blood moving to it.

On the TYR outfitr, they have smaller sizes, XL is the biggest.  I'm 6 feet, 200, it fits me snug. Wife said it looked fine and lots of freedom of movement. I know you don't want it too loose,  But if they made XXL, I would have gotten it.

I had a local shop that handles TYR order them.  You can get them direct from TYR or through web sites that handle it.  Goggle it.  I like it.

It's pretty flat. I just don't feel ready / like I've done enough. I also have no nutrition plan which is adding to the freak out. I have been using infinit on the bike, and feel ok with it I spose. But the longest I've biked is 45 miles with no run after. I have no clue if I should tak on more or less. I used 1.5 servings for a ride that lasted 3:18 (411 cals). I didn't feel hungry / pooped but I just have no clue how I'm meant to feel so I'm lost. Plus, although I've done the HM, I'm pretty sure doing it again after s/b is going to be way different. I really don't want to be doing it and miserable the whole time. This was 'meant' to be fun. Follow the plan doesn't work when you bike/ run as slow as I do.

In an effort to get to know the group a bit better I am going to admit to something and ask a question to all...

I own and even listen to an ipod while doing most of my training.  I know -there are dozens of threads about that...

That said - you have to build a list of 5 songs to help pull you through a 5k run.  What are you going to choose?

Me -

Allman Bros - No One to Run With

Iron Maiden - Wasten Years

Reo Speedwagon - Roll with the Changes

Metallica - Dyers Eve

Cowboy Mouth - Glad to Be Alive

Hey Team.

Uh - oh looks like the injur buy might be biting. Frown

Kevin - the calfs are tight as hell today. It had to be the new strokes I was working on. Stretching them as I type this.

Deb - I believe you could stick with your original race but you should do what is best for you, your body and mind and we all understand.

Brian - great question on the music choices. I am going to have to give it some thougt. I use my Ipod Shuffle sometimes when I run. I am going to review my musice and get back to you. I have never been one of those guys that knows his favorite songs and artists off the top of his head. I listen to a lot of talk radio and sports talk when I commute but enjoy the tunes, just not as much as others.  Also, my music choices come and go but I know I can give you some good ones so stay tuned LOL.

Here is one for sure - Switch Foot - Dare you to move http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE-Krlqi4fk

I hope everyone gets better soon - my knee was acting up today but I will ice tonight after I stretch these calfs - ouch.

KC

Deb - you are going to do fine.  I think you are really overthinking this and talking yourself out of it.  You still have a few weeks-  if you need help with your nutrition there is plenty of help here with all of us.  I think you should go into just trying to do the best you can.  No more, no less.  If you bike a little slower just to save some energy for the run -so be it.  If you have to walk the run a bit - so be it.  I havn't done an endurance race yet that I didn't feel miserable.  It's expected.  But the feeling you get when you cross the finish line makes you forget all that and all you'll be thinking about 5 minutes after is "that wasn't so bad" and  "when is the next race?".

Check this article out from the June  2011 Triathlon Magazine - think it may help you make up your mind.

Hey Team.

Sorry about all the posts - just bored LOL and getting ready to head to the pool.

I got a nice ride in this afternoon and I thought I would share some pics from along the way of beautiful Essex County Ontario. I know, probably dangerous to take pictures but I carry my blackberry with me for emergencies and trafic was light and I felt like taking a few pics. As you can see, not very hilly where I am from. The 2nd pic is taken at the entrance to a golf course I ride past.

Have a good night - off to the pool.

KC

Deb I have seen top level people have a "plan" and it all goes out the window when something goes wrong.  Just Come up with something you know will get you through and try it. Key is ALWAYS be ready for anything.  I've had to change a complete mealplan in the middle of an IM when my PB&J would not stay down 2hrs into the bike, made for rough nutrition plan when it was to be 3/4 of my cals.

You will be just fine hang in there and try to get as many workouts as life allows...... I will trade you I have a HIM Sunday with way less training than you!!
