Brenda good luck Stan good information on nutrition thanks Jeff, good taper info hope the Achilles is doing ok Tracy, I had a similar incident at the pool today, I offered to share my lane to a woman who was "walking" then she invites her friend over so they are basically standing and drifting into my half of the lane, as it turns out I have ten minutes to finish my swim because there's an aqua fit class, as these women start entering the pool they all come into MY lane and one just pops out in front of me to gently float around, where I had to come to a complete stop ugh...thank god the guy in the lane next to me saw what happened and waved me over to his lane ...as it turned out I had 20 laps to go and they kicked us out of the pool for the SIX women who were taking this class....are you kidding me!!!! Someone will be getting a not so nice email tomorrow. |

The only way I can seem to get this thing to work even post the name of the site is to list it at separate words. The site is theclimb.com but you have to remove the "i" and use a "y" Then you have to use the rest of the link this way............. /invite-from/DirkPauley You can copy and paste the two in your address bar without spaces and try it. This is the weirdest thing! I have never had any problems posting a link before. I have tried this a dozen times and it removes bit and pieces of the link no matter how I try to post it. VERY WEIRD!!! I am going to post it to my facebook for those of you that are on my friends list. Those of you that aren't "friends" you can friend me, Dirk Pauley |

Glad you enjoyed yourself. Where's the picture!? Jeff - Your ride sounds amazing! False flats are frustrating! I've never done one that long before. I do one that is about a mile long. I know it's a false flat but it ticks me off every single time! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I might be getting my hands on a new (to me) wetsuit! My swim coach has a couple of extras that she doesn't use now. (Must have something to do with sponsorships????) She's willing to part with them. We're about the same build, however, she is several inches taller than me. She thinks they might work for me. She said one of them felt "weird" on her shoulder, so we will see. My shoulders are pretty fickle. I did a fun tempo-ish run tonight on the treadmill. I warmed up and got my HR up to zone 2 for 25 minutes and then each minute I added 0.1 mph until my speed was up to half mary race pace. I held the speed at half mary race pace for 5 minutes and then backed the speed down to an easy run for another 10 minutes. What do you guys think of this tready version of a tempo run? Anything I could tweak to make it better? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tracy, that's a good way to spice up a run for anyone. Varying your pace can help break you out of the monotony of the same old, same old when running on a treadmill. Depending on the distance your training for a tempo run may be at a faster pace. I generally follow a 10k pace or slightly slower for tempo runs. The distance/time should start slow in the beginning and as you gain fitness and your body adapts to the impacts you can add to the run. I think you could have increased the speed faster and held the interim paces for a little longer, maybe 2-3 minutes per interval. Overall though, I think it was a nicely planned run to keep your body (and mind) from growing stale from the same old running routine. You had a really great WU for the run and that's pretty key too. I think what you did was begin to prepare your body for tempo runs in the next few weeks or so. Take your time to get used the the faster paces and impacts before really hitting a good tempo run and then add them to a normal training regimen if you like. Another thing, this is probably a good low impact WO for most people who have already gained a decent fitness at the beginning of run training because it is short in duration and impact. I would caution anyone who hasn't spent much time running to do this because it will increase the stress on the body. I would say a person should be running for no less than 3 months before doing anything close to this. |

Anything I could tweak to make it better? Anything you can do to spice up a treadmill run is awesome. I usually feel like banging my head against the wall after about a mile. I like this version though, it sounds pretty fun. It's like a combination of strides and a tempo run! ---------- So quick question for the group today. I spent a good chunk of my Sunday long run in Z1 because I was running with my dad, who is comfortable at a slightly slower pace than me. Frankly, I enjoy running at that pace because I can look at the scenery, chat and generally enjoy myself. My question is this - is there a benefit to extensive training in Z1, rather than Z2? My understanding (from limited experience and research) is that it should start opening up the pathways to fuel your body with fat, rather than glycogen/carbs. Therefore, the longer the event, the more of a benefit this is because you have more "fuel" available. Am I way off with this over simplified version? :-D John |

I think they will be beneficial for me. I don't like to do harder runs in training unless I'm outside and seek out some hills. I really like my zone 2 runs! Thank you for the advice! |

The only thing I worry about doing so much easy running, is if I will have the will and strength to push the pain threshold hard enough during a race. Edited by wbayek 2012-04-27 10:05 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did nothing but tourist stuff yesterday, but after a lot of walking I achieved limp free and pain free walking. Today I went to the exercise room and walked on the tmill for over half a mile before beginning an easy, slow run.. First 6.1mph then 6.5mph then 6.9. There was no pain. I kept my ankle limp so as not to really use my calf. Did 5 miles with no I'll effects. Very good news! Thanks to those of you who helped! (those prayers worked). Now my daughter needs your help. Her half Mary is tomorrow and Wednesday marked a flare up of her lower leg injury that I have tentatively diagnosed as posterior tibial is tendinitis. She will run the race short of death, but I hope she can do it free of that excruciating pain she has experienced with this before. |

I've been using your floppy ankle technique to relieve calf stress, and it's also kept my Achilles pretty happy the last week. Thanks for the advice on that one. Sending some prayers your daughter's way. That type of pain can be tough to work through. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great news for you Jeff but not so much for your daughter. I will keep her in my prayers for healing and for a strong race. I have a feeling she'll be fine. I'm not really sure why I have that feeling. Maybe it's the perception that you have been helping her train and knowing your training philosophies. Speaking of daughters. I have spent the last 3 hours typing a letter to her that I will give on her graduation day. As one who doesn't really show much emotion to those around me, this letter has been a real trial for me to write. Very emotional! I may share it at some point with the group because I hope it exhibits what a father should be and I believe that I have a responsibility to mentor in other areas besides triathlon. The letter is quite long. 3 pages to be exact. It is in kind of a random order too. I did not try to organize my thought and then place then in the letter. Rather, I simply began to type and allow the thoughts to escape and flow onto the screen. Lis read only 2-3 lines because I don't want her to read it just yet. I know when she reads it whe will be a basket case for a couple of hours. Yeah, it was pretty tough on me to write too. |

I learned a valuable lesson today, and that is I am not completely skilled on aero-bars yet! Dirk, yes being a father is hard and awesome. My som is 14 and they grow up so fast. Well today is just a 10K race. Wife and son are volunteering for this one. They have to be there an hour and 15 minutes prior to the race so I'm going to bike for the hour before the race. I'm using this just as a training run. It is finally getting warm enough to swim, supposed to be in the 90's Monday. YEAH!!! |

A very special gift. I was wondering how everyone is enjoying their new bikes? Not much to report on my end. Easy week for me but ready to hit it hard on the bike today. Hope to ride outside but I'm not sure the weather is going to cooperate! Good luck to everyone racing! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just back from the morning swim and surprised to see how many people were at the pool this morning. I didn't get in as much as I wanted to my arms and shoulders felt tired and heavy today. Only swam for 45 minutes and managed only 1250m this morning. I am off this morning to get in a 90 minute bike ride even though it has been a little cool here it does look like it is going to be a beautiful day so apologies to all who are have been dealing with bad weather. I may as well take advantage of it and get out there. Hope everybody has a great weekend and I hope the weather cooperates with everyone so you guys can get out there especially those of you who have those new bikes. Train hard and be safe. |
