So I'm headed to Bozeman, Montana next Tuesday.  Bunch of tri friends and SO's are going.  On July 29 we have two relay teams participating in a long course triathlon (half iron distance).  I am the swim leg of one of the teams.  Just found out that the biker on the other team has an injury and will not be able to participate.  After an afternoon of emails flying all around the dust settled and....I am swimming for one team and then biking for the other.  OH NO!!! What have I done?!?!?!?!?  The pressure is on to get out of the water before the other team's swimmer,  AND, I've only been back on my road bike about 1 month after not riding for several months due to the stupid ankle injury.  Top distance I've ridden is 60 miles so ok on the distance, but it's flat land here in chi-town so my hill training has been nil. (unless you count the highway overpass as a hill Tongue out )  There be hills in south western Montana.  This should be interesting.

Love Bozeman and the Bridger Bowl! My sister n law is from there and my friend Gail's family owns the Mexican Restaurant in town. I was last there for a wedding.. ENJOY ENJOY! Love Bozeman!!

stephsprint - 2012-07-21 10:33 AM Nice little run this morning. Incredible sunrise and a nice breeze. 80 degrees and 70% humidity.

Sounds nice Steph. Love those early morning sunrise runs. Haven't done one in a while. Have been doing a few few dusk swims bikes and runs though. Luckily, dusk is feeding time for trout and not sharks in fresh water lakes.

FINALLY shook the hand of a local (and one time national ski legend) legend. 92 year old guy who still rides between 6-7 miles everyday. I see him all over town but never had the chance to tell him he is one of my heroes.

ALSO: The local walking path has "Story Walk". Laminated pages of two kids books posted up on stakes for about a half mile. Took the family and dog today. It was nice to have a slow walk and actually read the books instead of zipping past doing laps. My favorite was 'Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend'.

What a cute idea!  And I love Scaredy Squirrel books.

And Steph, sunrise run sounds great. I've been out running at sunrise, but since we are usually running in the forest path we can't see the sunrise. One day would like to make it over to the lake front.  Now that would be a great sunrise run.

And speaking of runs...I went on my first PT approved 1 mile run today. Woo hoo! Went well.

My PT did a gait analysis on me running with and without shoes.  My gait with shoes is loud and I'm a heavy heel striker.  Which I knew.  But also showed how I role my left foot (bad side)rolls inward as I land and my right hip dips. Now without shoes I have a notably better gait.  Not rolling, forefoot strike and no hip movement.  I have been wearing cushion shoes with custom orthotics.  After consult with another PT both agree that perhaps I have too much with the cushion shoe and orthotic.  So, right now I am running in just the shoe, no orthotic to see how it goes.  Might give minimalist shoes a try.

Forgive my absence for the last week, I've been on vacation- I want to share my athletic adventures from vacation here

Went to a family reunion for a week camping with 20 of my closest family members from around the country about 30 miles north of Lake Placid NY.  We go there every summer, usually the week before Ironman.  Ironman has always been a curiosity for me, this year, I went to the expo with my SIL, tried on some Newtons (too much $$)  Zoot recovery sandals (ah!) and looked at bikes, wetsuits, and sampled nutrition supplements.  The participants were picking up their gear in really cool IM backpacks.  They were selling IM shirts, sneakers, just about everything with the logo.  My SIL refused to buy anything IM unless she actually competed in an event.  I will be the envy of my spinning class with my IMLP water bottle however.

My SIL is a runner, and recently competed in a HM in Buffalo last month.  She invited me to run with her, I didn't want to, after all, I'm slow...  But I did and found that she was not much faster than me- and with her, I finished my first 8 mile run, and it felt good!  She doesn't run much faster than my 11 minute mile, and we kept a nice pace together.

There is a lake our cabins were on- my 10yr old daughter, niece & nephew swam across and back for the first time this year (my husband does this every year).  It is about a mile total forward and back.  I admired my little girl for being fearless in the water- I was happy to swim back and forth from the dock to the raft a few times- didn't do that before.  Maybe next year

Take care all!

That sounds idyllic and wonderful! Ironman events are very very cool. Glad you got a little something... I'm with your sister though, I'd have to finish one. AND THEN... I'm a no tattoo, no piercing, no weird hair color kinda person (for me, anyone else can do what they want)... BUT, I'd get that tattoo on my calf. Damn right I would!

I love those kid accomplishments, they must have been SOOOO Excited!!! I'm also thrilled for you running with your sister. Such a cool thing.

My husband runs so beautifully, AND WAY FASTER, barefoot. I think we heel strike in standard 'running shoes' because we CAN. Too much SHOE. Minimalist shoes are great but you really have to go at it slow. You might just find you are a more thoughtful and lighter runner in them. Good luck!

I used to ride my bike along the lake early morning... I'll be in town October 7th for my husbands Marathon. I know he'll be off his feet saturday, but I plan on getting in a nice long run on the lake!

I envy you your paths. I'm in the concrete tropical jungle here!

Ooooo a legend, I love that! Story Walk, what a great idea. Never heard of this squirrel.... I must investigate.

I guess there are sharks here, but I've never seen one. It's the jellyfish I fear.

Sprint race #3 complete! Results are not up yet, so I don't have the official stats but it was definitely a nice race with the exception of the mildly disgusting lake water.  Oh, and the hills.  Omg the hills. Is it possible to swim uphill? lol

Updates from our other racers this weekend?

Funny race story: My dh told me afterward that at my bike rack someone actually left T1 on the wrong bike!! The poor woman with the missing bike was in hysterics and it took race officials nearly 10 minutes to locate the other athlete on the course and send her back to transition.  After the race, the woman who made the mistake was anxiously (very anxiously!) waiting to be released from transition, presumably with the correct bike! Laughing

Awesome job, and awesome story. Can't wait to hear the official results.

I've been waiting all day to hear from our other racers.

Did an awesome 11 mile trail run with about 3000+ feet elevation gain. I drank some questionable water, and now I think I have mentally made myself sick. If I don't get an intestinal parasite, then I feel very confident for the HM coming up.

What a trail run! Great job! You should definitely be feeling good for that HM - you'll nail it. (And erm...hopefully no parasites)

First sprint tri = done! I'm an Iron Girl (though that does not have quite the satisfying ring of saying Iron Man, but whatever). It's funny - I was most confident about the swim (I know, weird triathlete). It started out great and then I got kicked in the face hard, sucked in a ton of (totally disgusting) water, and erm...pretty much had a panic attack. Kept telling myself to calm the fudge down and I just couldn't, so I'm pretty sure the people on the canoes/kayaks had their eye on me thinking, "There's a potential drowner." (Super feeling for an ex-lifeguard!) I sort of got my groove back at the end of the swim, but mostly I just shook the swim off as I ran out of the water and thought, "Next leg will be better!" I spent an astonishing 6 min in T1. I have no idea what I was doing for 6min. But, the bike leg (even the hills!) was great (only place I got to pass a ton of people) and the run was very much the pace I'd anticipated. So, my best planned leg (swim) was the weakest, and my weakest planned leg (bike) was my strongest. Crazy. Total back of the pack finish, but the key word there is FINISH. Whoohoo! My next one is Sept 15 - lots of time for improvement.

YOU are an IronGirl!! That's so cool! Very proud of you. Getting kicked is NO fun and I am glad you recovered. I think the long transition is common after a 1st swim... adrenaline makes you think you are being efficient...when you are really just flailing. You'll get the head to toe thing next time... only have about 4 things on your transition mat, and voila! 2 minute transition.

You gutted it out, stayed positive and enjoyed the bike ride! WELL DONE.

YAY!! Hills make the bike/run transition tough... good going! Swimming uphill, that's hilarious

I cannot imagine the horror of realizing I'm on the wrong bike. Some people put balloons on their bikes in big races, so they can find their bike quickly... but the wrong bike. Hmmmm.

Guessing it was @ 1000 meters this morning. DRILLS DRILLS DRILLS. 3 stroke/1 arm side kick, catch-up, fists, 1 arm, straight kicking. Then swim sets. It would all be so much easier if I were in better shape. BUT alas, that comes with consistency. My new Motto "SHOW UP"

I know I know .. slacker...

Here are a couple my wife took... There is no photo of my finish, but there is a silly story behind it. One where I just managed to move out of the frame.  I am still writing my race report for the scrap book my wife is making.  The report is taking longer than I thought it would.  Apparently, it is going to be a novel. I will post it once it is finished.

I am in there somewhere.

Swim

Going to T1

Swim is done

Going to T2

Going to T2

All done.
