can you guys help me figure out my zones?

So I know from my LT field test my cycling LT hr is 172.  so what are Heart Rates for each of my zones? I need to learn not to hammer all the time

This is my favourite article on LT: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=633

Which illustrates how you would calculate the zones after a test - does this help?

How appropriate that you asked..I intended to do the LT test for running tonight...I still need to build up bike fitness before doing it there, but have the same hammering problem with the run. I'm doing it tonight, I'll let y'all know how it goes! Have a great week all!

Wow, thanks for that link, Cat! I skimmed over it quickly, but definitely want to take the time to really read it in detail. I admit that I've just been using the 220-age thing at this point. Hopefully Mike isn't lurking in our thread. I'd hate to send him off the deep end. LOL

ok so math is not my strong suit.

I read the article and it tells you how to do the LT test but when it comes to actually figuring out the numbers for the zones it says something along the lines of according to the Friel system someone's zones would look like this.... and gives you and example but doesn't tell you the equations.  I guess what I am looking for are those percents to multiply my LT HR by to calculate each zone. Zone one is around 55% of LT right? what are the rest?

Here's another article by Mike that I found on the D3 site. It talks about Friel's zones, but lists them as being x beats below your LT vs. a percentage of it.

Jeni, we are far too much alike....you just hammer on the bike and I do it on the run--we should do a relay!   I'm going to have to read these and figure them out so I'm not lost when I'm exhausted tonight! haha

ok, this is weird.

I don't know who I am anymore.... having a bit of an identity crisis this afternoon.

but it's the first time I've ever had a nickname that stuck so I am going to "spin" with it.

Woowhoo!! I love when computers do math for me!

So first week check in!!

1)weight change this week
2)what is working
3)anything you need to change to help you make your goal?
4)one happy thought (cause we always need more of these

So for me!

1) I am down 2 lbs as of this morning.

2)My "fun fund" is working great to motivate me to pass up treats and this week I've made $10. (and knowing how many times a week I used to indulge reveals why I had so much trouble!!) I've expanded it to include passing up treats when I am tempted anywhere at anytime not just at my residence meal plan.  It's amazing how standing in a coffee shop and thinking about a muffin can be dissuaded by the thought of putting a dollar in a jar.

3) stay commited.  lots of water and keep thinking about how good I feel off the sweets and how it shows up in my training.

4) on my group ride Sunday one of the women said.  "your body is really changing with all the training."

Okay, here is my update:

1) -1.5 lbs
2) eliminating some choices from the kitchen, drinking more water when I think I want a snack
3) Still some occassional mindless eating--especially when prepping meals
4) I was so thrilled to see a couple of the pictures from the Lone Star tri as my arms looked so cut--more so than I've ever seen them, and that was encouraging..the upper body is there, let's get the lower body there now!

1)weight change this week--00000(but i just jumped in on this a few days ago-hopefully this won't be the trend)
2)what is working--so far i'm drinking lots more water, and thats probably good-my big trouble time is after i get the kids to bed, i have almost 4 hours before dh gets home, and it's my "big bad snack" time
3)anything you need to change to help you make your goal?i'm doing really well, except at night
4)one happy thought--i've made 5 kinds of cookies this week, and a lemon mousse, and i HAVEN'T indulged!! LOL

it's my dh's b-day today (he's 46--yeah i know, a BIT of an age difference ) so we're hanging out, but i'm hoping to still get a run in

1. Weight Change - down .6 of pound
2. What is working - journaling my food intake
3. Snacking during meal prep, too much love of food. I wish more things tasted nasty so I wouldn't eat them.
4. One of my guy friend training partners told me he bought some swim paddles so he could get his arms to look like my legs. I took that as a compliment.

You guys are doing great. I need to step up an get serious. I always struggle with my weight. I need to view my diet as a serious part of my training instead of as an emotional-laden form of indulgence. One day at a time, I guess.

LOL!!! my mom gave me a cookie cook book for my birthday, and i LOVE LOVE LOVE to bake, but i think the reason i love it, is because it gives me a perverse sense of power. i almost NEVER sample what i bake.

just tonight, my mom had a meeting at her house, so i took all the cookies over there, and they're gone now. hmmmmmm, what will i make tomorrow!?!?

BUT i must confess that i fell to the after kids are in bed snacking again. i TRIED to make a healthier choice though, i had only ONE stale marshmellow peep (MMMMMM, it's like from the end of feb!! so rock hard and good!!) and a small bowl of mini wheats. i wish i could have the will power to NOT snack at ALL!! it's AWFUL!!! i need to use my "non cookie eating" power on the night snacking!!

man, when I bake cookies they rarely make it past the cookie dough stage. Way to go with the cookie power!!

tonight I passed on the most delicious tiramisu I've seen in a while... another dollar for my jar!
