Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I've got a bit of a dilemna ... I was thinking of doing another Sprint Tri on August 3rd over in PEI. I had planned to hang onto my boss' wetsuit and use it again for the swim since it is an ocean swim and so will surely be cold enough that wetsuits are allowed plus the possibility of rough water. Unfortunately, my boss asked for the wetsuit back because he is going on vacation next week and may want it for some OWS while he is away. I've tried to find a place in PEI that rents wetsuits but no luck. So, I can either skip the race or try it without a wetsuit ('cause Mrs FBP sure ain't keen on me spending $$$ to purchase one just now). I'm reluctant because I don't want to spoil my enthusiasm for triathlon by having a really bad experience in my first ocean swim. Should I wait or should I do it anyway? |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! IMO I think you should do it. Check out where the race will be held before you register. Most of the time the ocean swims are held in pretty protected bay areas. The water is chilly in the ocean. I dont know how you feel about cold water. It is TOUGH to get your breathing under control when the water is cold. Again....try it out before you register. If its comfortable for you....GO FOR IT!!! Whats the worst that can happen, you go slow and float if you get panicky. The swim is te shortest part! I am going to do a mile ocean swim this Sat its a race in Salem MA. Wetsuits are encouraged, but I think its more related to the distance. THIS GROUP IS GETTING ALOT OF FINISH LINES! |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! In case you haven't read on the other forums, a BT'er named Christine ( AKA Lucy) has a brain tumor and will likely not survive the night, this happened very suddenly. Saturday fellow BT'ers are running 5K in her honor all over the country/world. Her coach has set up a 5Kin tampa with all proceeds going to her family ( she has 2 teenage sons). There is also an address posted to send donations. Although I do not know her personally, I will plan on running on Sat. I hope you can all put your sneakers on and run in her honor. Thanks mav |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Well.....methinks my foam roller has never had it so good......smile. sticka - check out wetsuitrental.com I think for about $40 US you can rent a wetsuit for a week. If there is a tri shop nearby, call and ask them if they rent them. Third, see if there is a tri club nearby that you could borrow one.....or check with the race organizers for help. There's four ideas to float...I would encourage the race but really want you to be in a wetsuit for the rough, cold, ocean swim....could be challenging...I would want the help. That said, if you try it ahead of time, you might feel okay about it and then, go for it. I don't swim in cold water so it would probably bother me but then there is our resident polar bear colorist weighing in as well..... Mav - where is the address information for donations? I am going to run on my vacation in her honor and make a donation...I encourage all of you to do it too. It doesn't need to be an organized event, mine won't be, but we will do it. In fact, for all of you who run 3.1 miles on Saturday - I will make a donation to this girl so let's put some turtle miles on this one. We all should be able to put 3.1 miles on our sneakers for her. Just post on her you did it and when I return, the check goes out....you can donate too but I think this is cool and we are one blessed group. sTRIve |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Sticka, I am not one to give much advice, but I say DO IT YOU WIMP!!!!! :^) ... You are a tough cookie and I know you can. However, if you decide you need to use a wetsuit, here is a company that rents them through the mail! I have not used them, but I know other people have talked about it with good experience. http://wetsuitrentals.com/ Check it out and see if this helps. Mav, your swimming is amazing! I am truly impressed with your ability to swim OWS. I want to be as good as you when I am your age Although I don't want your a$$ problems (you know I had to get one in). I am thinking about one more Tri on July 26. Bryan told me I was ok to wait until 8-24 (btw Bryan, this is still a sprint! I am not ready for an OLY this year - maybe next!), but I think I want one more before Chicago. Also, I am looking for suggestions on my swim work-outs. Until I can find a way to get in OWS, what should I be doing in the pool? Thanks, Dan |

We are running Saturday morning as a family at the Lifetime Poker Run. My goal is to run a 10K (I have never ran more than a 5K in the last 30 years). I am not worried about the time, just trying to get it finished. I too will make a donation. Dan |

W!hat a great group we have! OK DAN..... I knew you would have to chime in!! In case you are wondering...I'm fine. Rode 20 miles today no probs!!!!! I thought you were being a gentleman. I WAS WRONG!!!!!!I.m loving the OWS this season. Swam 1000 tonite out to the middle of a lake and back. Saw LOTS of fish!!! Sticka, I forgot to mention I loved your you tube!!! |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I signed up for the run in Florida as a donation...I finally got a link to work from page 4 or 5 I think...what a horrible horrible thing....my thoughts and prayers go out to her family. Sticka - Dan mentioned the same wetsuit place I sent. Dan - 10k....dude - you are a triathlete smacktalking dude....10K.....of course you can do a 10k.....slow and steady....walk when you hit your AT for a minute or so....let the HR drop...then plow ahead... Dan - pool workouts....do an endurance swim....long continuous....start to add one minute to your long continuous swim....you will be doing 30 minutes nonstop before you know it, also do a strength building set....like a pyramid build of 2x 50, 2x 100, 2x150, 200, 2 x 150, 2 x 100, 2x50 after a warmup and then do a cool down (at first, do this ladder up to 150 and back down...then do it up to 200 after one or two up to 150 on separate visits of course, and then if you swim a third time, I am a big fan of a little speed work, like 10 50s trying to make each one a little faster and work into 10 75s each a little faster and then ultimately 10x100s each one a little faster....this last one is TOUGH.....so there is a three swim week - one endurance, one strength and one speed. This is a lot of swim work and also know that each workout is a form workout...keep your form as good as possible throughout. Now, you are thinking...there is no flipping way I can swim that far....shut up and swim....you can all do these...swimming endurance is mainly in your head...modify them as necessary but give it a shot...I remember the first time I looked at a pyramid/ladder workout...I busted out laughing....now I actually enjoy them...go figure. Dan....canNOT believe you brought up the "rear" on Mav a$$"cracks".....wiseguy....ROFLMAO sTRIve - I will miss you all while I am away on vacation...I will have so much reading to do in a week and a half.... |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bryan, I love the ladder approach and will start tomorrow! I can already swim 1 mile in about 37 minutes (I started doing 1 mile swims right after my 1st tri). I was swimming 1 mile twice a week. I will increase my swim to 3 times a week and use your plan. Have a GREAT vacation. We will miss you, but Mav and FBP will do an outstanding job hosting in your absence! sTRIve on Turtles! Dan Edited by MSUDan 2008-07-15 8:55 AM |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bryan, I THINK YOU ARE TRYING TO KILL ME!!!! OK, I did the pyramid thing this morning and thought I was going to die! It was like I was swimming for the first time again! With my swim partner, we did a 50, 100, 150, 200, 200, 150, 100, 50. I swam the 1st 50 as hard as I could (45 seconds!) and I couldn't breath after - this was the only time I have ever beaten my swim partner! We took a 1 minute break and did the next leg. I did it in about 2 minutes and again was dead! I don't wear my HR monitor when swimming, but I was WAYYYYY over AT! By the time I got to the 150, he was beating my by an entire length. I stopped keeping track of the time since I was so tired at the end of the leg I couldn't even look at the clock! I felt like this was January and I was just starting to swim again. My partner - who is a very good endurance swimmer - was extremely tired as well - even though he got more rest inbetween legs since he did them faster! I think this is just what I needed! My plans are to swim 3 times a week: 1 endurance (at least 1 mile); 1 pyramid like this (only I want to add a 250 at the top as I progress); and 1 inbetween (800m plus sprints after). Thanks for the suggestion! sTRIve on Turtles! Dan |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Have you ever had a problem with swans when doing an OWS???? Last week when I was up here on the Cape I went swimming in this lake where our house is located. These 2 swans and 2 babies were near the beach and honking like creazy. I just waited and they eventually went away. Today they swam parallel to me for half my swim...no honking. They really kind of scare me. I got bit by one a couple of years ago in a park. Have you ever heard of such a thing??? I wear my wetsuit just in case they decide to attack, at least I feel protected in my sausage casing!!!!! I'm leaving tommorow...have to work for a few days then I'll be back on the Cape for the last week sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! The post I wrote last night seems to have been "lost in space" ... Had a good swim yesterday - 650m continuous. I was pressed for time or else I would have continued a little longer. Last night I participated in the "20 Minute Challenge" a nation-wide event organized by The Running Room stores. Free registration, a free hat and some other giveaways. Over 22,000 across the country participated and we had a good crowd (probably 100 or so) here in little old Fredericton. Looked into the on-line wetsuit rental place but not practical for cross-border postage so that's out. I'm still working on a solution but nothing yet. Mav - you always have something to keep us entertained, killer swans being the latest FBP |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Yeah...killer swans...they are really nasty birds, they might look pretty ...BUT NOT!!!!!! I didn't swim today. I'm taking today and tommorow off from swimming as I am going to do an ocean mile swim race on sat (I know they dont have swans!!!) and I want to be rested. Pete.. I like the idea of the Lobsterman. It sounds like a fun race. I am racing every weekend for the 4 weekends before Lobsterman. One of those being the Ironman swim in Plymouth. We are still trying to find a runner for the Ironman relay 26.2 in Plymouth. If we cant find one, we wont be doing the race and I will consider doing Lobsterman. I shold know by the end of next week. The biker is doing IM Lake Placcid this Sun. As soon as she comes home we will talk. IT would be AWESOME to do a race with you!! This is a very competative race. Similar to the one I did in NH. I also think the bike is quite hilly (HILLS ARE YOUR FRIENDS!!!). If I cant race, and you decide to do it I will go and cheer you on as it is my weekend off! It would be great if others in our group wanted to come and finish off the season with a TEAM sTRIve race. Anyone game??? Bryan I know its close to your 1/2 IM but it would be great training. A New Englad Lobsta Bake with some chowda??????? Come on!!!!! |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey Turtles! Sure is quiet here without Bryan and haven't seen Leston or Juanita in a while so I figure I should post something! FBP, I think you should go to New England and do the run! Mav, you sure don't want me doing it for your team :^) - not yet anyway. Here are a few things happening: 1. LTF has added a Masters Swim Program! I have joined and will start to swim with them next week. So far there are only 2 swimmers and 1 instructor so I like the personal attention! I am determined to make the swim one of my strongest evens! 2. I joined Christine's 5K run as a donation. 3. I started posting on the Michigan Board in Forums. It is amazing how many people within 30 minutes of me are really into Tri's! There are several in Lake Placid this weekend. (Mav, it was your suggestion that made me post on this board looking for partners in OWS. I have found much support! Thanks for the suggestion - I didn't even know this existed) 4. My wife, 2 daughters, sister and I are doing the Poker Run this Saturday - our whole family is getting into this health craze! 5. My PF has been acting up in my foot for the first time in a while. I need to stretch more consistently. I hope it doesn't get much worse because I need to be running! That's about it for me right now. Thanks for being here the last 6 months. You all have been tremendous beyond words! Dan |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! DAN From what I see you certainly can do the distance!! You are swimming a mile, you bike and run well...so all you have to do is put them all together!!! COme get some Lobsta!!! I think you will enjoy the Masters program. Once the temps drop and there is no more OWS I will go back to my group. I miss swimming with my group. Have to work tonite...then back to the Cape for the last few days. Tommorow I will swim a mile race in Salem Harbor (witch town). This should be an adventure as I have only done distance in a lake. The Ironman relay I plan in August is in the ocean. No time like the present! SWIM KARMA for tommorow is needed!!!! |

Plus, no jokes about witches or brooms or anything. You're going to do GREAT in your swim. Wish I was up to doing a marathon so that I could join your relay team. Alas, anything more than a HalfMary is but a pipe dream for me. Another event I've been looking at is the "Pumpkinman" - don't ya just luv dat name? http://www.pumpkinmantriathlon.com/ I think it'll probably be sold out though before I can commit to going. The Lobsterman sounds great but realistically I don't think I'll be ready to do an OLY distance this year. |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey sTRIvers! I've been away for a few days and took yesterday catching up on all things work etc. Went camping with the family Mon-Wed to a pretty little lake up the canyon. Swam in the lake and had a lot of fun. Could actually see in the water, which was nice, at least in the shallower parts, which made the swimming that much more interesting. Swam across the lake and back. Didn't really pay attention to how long it took or anything, just swam and had a good time. Hiked, fished, ate, the regular camping things. This morning I swam my longest yet. After some drills in the pool, I swam 1100 yards. For me that is long - not for mav or Dan, or the rest of you, but it felt pretty good to do it. My OLY is next Saturday. A little trepidation, but not too much. Looking forward to it. I know it will be tough because it's twice as far as the other two I've done, but I'm just going to focus on left, right, repeat Mav, a Team sTRIve event sounds like a wonderful idea! I just wish that you guys weren't so far East. Maybe we could all meet somewhere central like Missouri - there must be a Mississippi Mudman Tri, or something :^p. Maybe not. Dan, you are a swimming machine, and I'm amazed at how well you are doing, and your motivation. I can't say that I share your enthusiasm for swimming yet. I have a hard time really enjoying it. "Happy Laps"...?...not me...maybe some day. Your goal to make it your best event is awesome! You will do it, I have no doubts. Any advice for tapering next week? And when will our fearless leader return? [whimper, whimper] Carry on sTRIvers! Leston |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Mav, You have had my positive thoughts all day! I HOPE THEY HELPED ... I certainly am not ready for running any serious distance yet. Maybe next year! Leston, Nice to hear from you! Sounds like the camping trip went well! If you are ever really bored, go back in my posts or training logs to see where I was whinning about doing 250m in the pool and afraid I was going to to drown in Lake Michigan in August! You guys have helped me so very, very much in achieving my goals so far. It is GREAT to have a group like this. FBP, You crack me up! Thanks for being here! Juanita, Miss you Update: My wife, sister, daughter and daughter's friend all ran in the LTF Poker Run this morning. It was a "trail" run through the woods on matted wood chips. 2.75 loop. Fairly flat, but some small hills, running along side a river. IT WAS VERY, VERY COOL! I did 2 loops (total of 5.5 miles) in 51 min (my 12 year old daughter did it in 45 min, waited for me then did a third loop!). I formed a blister on the bottom of my right foot or I would have walked another loop (I was done running!). Weather was very, very humid and I poored water on myself several times. Between the sweat and the water, I was soaking wet - even my shoes (plus there were some muddy spots!). I think that is what caused the blister! Anyway, this will become an annual event for us (I even won a gift certificate for 4 personal training sessions with a trainer!). I start my masters swim class on Monday and will practice with the other BT'ers on Thursday night for a bike/swim brick. I still have a lot to do before the end of August! Take care and sTRIve on Turtles! Dan |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I DIDN'T DROWN!!!!! This was a fun race 1500 open water ocean swim. I finished in 31 mins (or close to it) It was alot more difficult than I thought. I went out kind of fast and forgot to exhale. I said to myself WTF are you doing????? I started to stroke and breathe every fourth and then I felt pretty comfortable. There was very little chop. Mid way through my goggles began to fog and I couldnt see a thing. I had to stop twice and clean my goggles. The bouys are far apart when its a long distance. I had convinced myself that I was last until I was coming into the shore and then there were all these people around me. I sped up and waited until my hands hit. I finished 27/50. Not too shabby as the majority of those swimming were "children". When I got out of the water there were two people who told me that they drafted off me the entire way!!! Thats why I didn't see anyone!!! It was a great experience and a really fun race. They played Simply the Best , by Tina Turner as the last swimmers were coming in, it was a nice touch. This race made me realize thAT IF i DO THE iRONMAN IT IS 1.5 MILES MORE...yikes!!! Thanks for all the swim karma. Tonite a 5K run in honor of fellow BT'er Christine. |
