Gary those times are pretty fast. My son was a collegiate swimmer and did 1650 sub 20 and he was ranked 6th in New England!

Just to be clear.. those are not my times,,, I've had some decent swim times before but not like that..   for US Master swimming the take a three year average of the tenth place time then add in some percentage to see if you qualify..
also this is the short course yards times,  but those are some fast times.  what's worse is that is the 40-44 group, next year I go into the 45 group and their times are a sec faster !!!!  crazy..

We had a lady at our masters that qualified in the 75y/o + group and they are still pretty quick  I think she had to be just under a 2min 100 yard to make it and she did.  Plus she was a very cool lady so that was a bonus.

Wow - I'm 43 and being able to consistently swim 2 min/100 yards is one of my goals!

mav - 2010-01-19 5:05 AM Morning! Im saving us from page two!

Whats on tap today for everyone?????

After my classes today, the plan is to hit .....the pool.  Shocking.  I KNOW.  I haven't been in it much the last 18 months.  (Cancer and the MVA didn''t really have positive effects on that area.)  I also am planning a short plod...rather than a quick plod.  Changed the wording for Kev...didn't want to be an oxymoron!!   LOL

Hope all are having a great Tuesday.

Gaarryy - 2010-01-18 9:54 AM Crap ola... just for giggles and grins I was looking at what swim times I'd need to qualify for nationals at US master swiming..  Since I'm thinking that for maybe a year I'd just concentrate on swimming   but crapola it's (too me ) insanely fast.

for the 100 free I'd have to be under 57 seconds and for the 1650 free I'm right at 20 min,

arrgh !!!!!!!!!

Holy sh*t.
Nuff said.

I don't know what the big deal is.  I can run 100 meters in 57 seconds or less.  Wait - this is a swim thread isn't it....oops.   Well, I"m sure I can SINK that fast.

Today I did my first run workout since the back blowout of 2010.  Did not go as well as I had hoped.  I got on the treadmill, a little nervous, but figured I'd run easy for 30 minutes and get 3 + miles in.  10-12 minutes in my back started feeling weird, and yeah, I was all jiggily.  Too much flab flapping around.  Shortly after that, my right hip flexor started talking to me and talked me into stopping my "run" at 15 minutes.  I walked another 2, then went back to running so I could get 2 miles in before 20:00 transpired.  I walked a .25 mile or so cooldown with the last .1 set at 10.5 incline (why not?)  Followed that up with 2 miles on the bike.  Through it all, had Pandora going on my DROID.  What song did I end with?  Well, of course, Led Zeppelin, The Song Remains the Same.  (Live, 1973)  Thought I'd bike as long as the song went.  I apparently pedal faster than that.  It is a LONG song.  (For those that don't know, has the line "dazed and confused")

I also forgot to take my pain pill this a.m. (Darvocet)  Forgot to pack it along to take at work.  I think I would have left my head at home this a.m. if it was not attached.  *sigh*.  At least the workout had an alleged 566 calorie burn.
happy days folks, today has to get better.  (its "bad" for other reasons)

Hm.  I thought that was an easy workout.  On the treadmill, I'm usually doing 3 + miles with an average pace of about 8:30.  The bike didn't bother me and I had a bike and elliptical workout last week.

That may be....but your body was clearly telling you otherwise.
I know NOTHING about back injuries and do not pretend to...........but I think that there is a vast difference between bike/ elliptical and running simply because of the compression involved. No?

I dont know anything about back injuries either, but I've had my share of injuries of other types and seem to never learn.  I took 6+ weeks off from running/biking (from a minor injury) and started back slowly in December and ramped up quickly in January (check the logs last week) and am paying for it now.  Nothing too serious, but my achilles started acting up this weekend after a long bike ride and I ignored it and ran 5 miles with my wife on Sunday.  It feels ok but its still a set back and I havent run/biked this week, and I had no business attempting that type of effort that quickly.  Again, I've never had a back injury but I know they can be aggravated my many types of activity - my only advise is to take it SLOOOOOOWW and dont do something that will further delay your recovery
Good Luck

Yes, I agree the compression/jarring is a concern.  I was wondering while I was running if I was doing more harm by going slow.  Might try some 5/1 tomorrow.  5 minutes at 8/830 pace, one minute at 16:00.

I am going to chime in here as another mentor ....the one with the back injury!!!!! Duanne...STOP running, stop biking!!!!!You should not be doing any training until you are pain free without DRUGS!!!!!You can actually do some damage to your back if you continue. You should get guidance from your MD as to when you can resume based on your injury but from what I know of your injury I would say you are training way too soon. Swimming is fine as there is little impact to your spine, but you must be careful of the way you turn at the wall..no twisting. If you continue to train through pain while using drugs you are risking your health. Your back is the center of all your movements...if you screw it up everything will be affected. Please be careful.

That being said I had an MRI today which only shows 2 bulging discs and I am finally feeling better. I just cant sit for long as one is very low. PT guy says I should be able to start working on an arc trainer in the next few days . FYI...its like an elliptical but simulates running better and has minimal impact. Im excited that I can finally get up and around better

Suzie ...glad to hear you are getting in the pool. Its the only thing I have done for almost 3 weeks now and everything I eat is begining to taste like chlorine;/. Only 8 more weeks til OWS season!!!!

Duane, Duane, Duane......do we all need to come there and straighten you out???  You need to let the injury recover.  I herniated 2 lumbar discs many years ago.  The ortho and neuro I went to both restricted me to core, swimming and walking for 3 months after the injury.  Walking was done PAIN FREE.  I was able to gradually increase the distance as my pain level allowed.

Here's a question for the group....What can I do about cramping that occurs in the posterior tibalias of one of my feet every time I swim?  I feel I have enough fluid within me.  This morning before I swam I had at least 55 oz of fluid in the form of water.  I feel nutrition-wise I was good too.  It is so annoying.......  Thanks

I ve got the same prob.
Are you pushing off the wall equally with both feet?
Does this occur when you wear fins? ( stop wearing them...they are not allowed in races)
Have you made sure you are getting enough calcium and Potassuim? Bananas /oranges/potato/dairy ...you know
I do several exercises prior to my long swims...espicially for the feet I stand on my tip toes X10 sec rest for 5 and repeat

Hope some of that may help!
