Great job Tim and Mike!!  Sounds like you guys had better luck than I did.  I had a pretty bad race, but still had a good time!

My race didn't go so well for me today.  I was going to complain about the 1000 ft of climbing I did in 10 miles but after hearing Tim's report I'm not going there. LOL

I took a couple days before the race hoping to get over this upper respiratory infection.  I felt good going on the starting line, but about halfway through the race my lungs burned.  Not the kind of burn you get from a good workout either.  Anyway, I really wanted to stick it out and finish the race so I did.  But I was completely out of focus.  I crashed at least 3 times that I remember, and it was all stupid stuff.

The good news is two of my training partners did really well.  Infact, one of the beat me even after he broke a chain.  LOL  I gotta give props to them because last year that weren't even keeping up.

So Tim, looks like I won't be moving to Cat 2 anytime soonFrown

So I guess the next QOTD should be what to do when your feeling sick and possibly over trained?  LOL

Well If your body is begging for a break take a week and chill just walk 2 or 3 times in the week you will be amazed how much you will recover. Being sick or having a medical problem affect your training sucks!!!! I have one keeping me from doing much at all right now.

I'm glad you finished your race.. Sorry to hear it didn't go as well as you wanted to but you still finished and that alone is great...

It's a new day.  I'm going to take some time off the intense workouts.  Maybe just lift weights and some light swimming or something for a week.  I'm going to try and look at the bright side.  Which is, even though I felt terrible, I still shaved 10 minutes off my time on the same course last year

Good morning everyone! I got home from Wildflower late last night and need to catch up on the last few days of posts but wanted to give you all a quick race report.

There are definitely some things I can work on but I'm happy with the results. My overall time was 2:50:44. I was competing mostly against 3 other friends and ended up beating all of them. Second place was 11 minutes back actually...so the target is on my back for sure.

Swim: I'm capable of going faster. I didn't get into a good pace until half way, choppy water for first half, hard to sight on the bouys.

Bike was 1:27:44. Ugh...hills! I kept thinking it would be mostly rollers with one or two climbs. They were BIG rollers. I traded spots with a couple guys - they would pass on the hills, I would pass on the descents. This tells me I need to build strength in my legs to spin up the hills easier.

Run...It was HOT. And HILLY. Up, up, up, the whole damn way. Again, lack of leg strength. The last mile of the run is down Lynch Hill. The problem is, it's so steep that it's not an enjoyable downhill run. A friendly spectator handed me half a PBR which I gladly accepted, generating a "chug, chug, chug" chant from the crowd. Run time was 51:37.

Good morning all. I had to go back to work this morning. I'm feeling pretty good. I'm a little sore in places I didn't really expect: my upper back, shoulders, and a couple blisters on my hands. Legs feel pretty good.

I'll hopefully get caught up on our thread this afternoon.

Congrats to all that had races. At a quick glance, it looks like you guys rocked it!

Also, I posted a little narrative about my race in my training blog.

Talk with you soon!

Great to see everyone's race updatates!  Fun stuff.  I'm back from L.A., and am going to up the bike a bit.  My run volume has been good, but I'm completely slacking on the biking.  Gotta pick it up!

For April, my run was right on target at ~12 hours (70 miles), but my biking was about 1/2 of what I planned at ~7 hours (100 miles).

Great race Dave!!

I got beat by guys this weekend that I usually walk over.  Not a good feeling.  They are younger and getting faster but it sucks when you know you could have done better.

brick94513 - 2010-05-02 5:16 PM Well... this was probably the hardest race I have ever done! I completed 11 laps, which is 135 miles and 18700 ft of climbing. I could of gone one more lap, but it would of been useless since I couldn't catch the guy in front of me. I learned a lot. I'll share the experience when I get home. I'm thoroughly beat!

Tim,

That's pretty darn impressive -- 135 miles and over 3.5 of climbing.

Guess we'll forgive you for not going one more lap!

Dave -- Used to play "Nerf H-O-R-S-E" with guys in the lab for $1.  The ability to chant "I got your dollar" was worth WAY more than the actual cash.  Suspect your buddies do indeed now have a BIG target on your back.  Congrats

I'm taking a nice day off today before I get back at it preparing for Encinitas in a few weeks.  RR is posted... Siesta time.   Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Well, went for first group bike ride of the season.  Beautiful night, no wind...a little cold, but hey, you can't have it all.

Took my roadie as it is usually easier to ride in pace line, etc.  Glad I did, a very hilly route & much easier to stand on pedals & climb.  My quads were complaining occasionally, as my legs were still a little sore from 17mile run yesterday.  May rest tomorrow, but if feel good, might get a short, 5-10k run in...

The excitement of race season is among us & it is cool.  Even the "feeling" of the thread has changed.  I like it!!!

I am experiencing some real hand/wrist pain from my ride Saturday.  Is this normal and goes away with T I T S or is this something to be concerned with?  It's was bad yesterday, has waned mostly today and I expect it will be gone tomorrow.  I am changing my extensions to ski bend in a couple weeks which should help too, but I'm concerned about the interim.

Eh...forgot why I came here. Now I remember:

Has anyone ever had post-race letdown? I can't seem to get motivated to do my training this week. What's wrong with me?

I love training, and I not only do it for racing, but for another, more important reason: I have a neurological "disorder" called tinnitus (it's where your ears ring constantly and it bugs the holy heck out of you until you feel like you will go insane), and I've found that getting my HR up for extended periods of time makes the ringing go away - so I really have no choice but to train.

I just feel kind of "eh" right now. I need to get over this as I've got two sprints coming-up the first two weekends in June.

I've gone through these let downs. I think it is part of the competitive nature. So, your finish was less than expected. Learn from this. This has now become your new benchmark. Use this experience to set realistic goals for your upcoming races.

Also, while this is harder for me, try not to dwell on what went wrong, but instead on what went right. Reinforce the postive and don't repeat the negatives.

Race season is starting!!!

Cool

Now...gotta wait for a few race reports to roll in.

croixfan - 2010-05-02 10:18 AM

Hit 4:08 on the swim, 17:38 on the bike, and 10:22 on the run.  Transitions took 2:35.  Total was 34:44 so I was under target by more than a minute.  Swim was just like a normal workout.  I REALLY need to learn how to swim as it's pretty ugly.  Bike went exceptionally well as I stayed in the lower gears and kept the cadence up.  Biggest issue on the bike was clipping in and turning around.  Really screwed up both.  Coming out of the bike I was a bit winded and made a mistake in T2 by eating 1/2 granola bar.  Stupid thing stuck in my throat for the entire run.  Run felt really, really hard as I was struggling settling down in to a breathing rhythm the entire time.  However, the run time was great!   Time on the treadmill, stationary bike, and road is paying off.  Transitions were pretty ugly due to lack of practice; however, not too worried about this.

Congratulations of making your goal! Very successful results in my opinion!

Transitions cost you as you noted. Remember, these are important, especially at the shorter distances. Almost eight percent of your total time was spent in transition. Practice, practice, practice.

Also, for the sprint distance, I wouldn't worry about the food. You body has plenty of glycogen for fuel to last for the race duration. If you feel you absolutely have to have something, consume a gel about 10-15 minutes prior to the race with plain water.

By the way, your son looks just like you!
