Swimming in 42 degree water is just crazy to me. I wait until the water is over 70 and still wear a wet suit until it is around 80. (except in races above 78). The coldest water I remember was Chicago at 61 degrees in August. That was the final race I will do north of the Mason/Dickson line.

I give you an A+ for you enthusiasm but a lower grade for your sanity.

haha me and nerdjock are going to be cold in the idaho lake but we will soon heat it up on the bike then run!

great to see lisab back on board. she's gonna destroy publix half this weekend. she always says she is not going to do well then smacks it out of the ballpark.

peter, i hit your lap data, i think you can smash that run at PI this weekend during the sprint. no holding back! bust it loose.

and yes, even the slayer has his bad days, weeks, moments etc. the trick for me is acceptance. once i accept that my body is messed up then i lower the demands on myself and the anxiety eases too.

Hope you all ain't letting work get you down; keep on plugging. SOme of you are racing this weekend (peter, LisaB); lets hear from you on race strategy so we can pick it apart haha.

Shanks put me on an adaptation (i.e., recovery) week due to my travel this weekend and my hammy. It won't help my monthly volume, but its just what the doctor ordered!

Peter, do you have any input on these compression boots:

The lymphedema pump was the biggest DME scam in Medicare history. They work great for Milroys disease but don't have many other medical indications. That leaves a well designed machine looking for a market place. If it feels good and somebody is convinced it helps, I'm sure it does. Unless they have improved the ventilation on the sleeves they get very hot and uncomfortable. I am sticking with ice and elevation.

This mornings w/o was a bit of a fail. I was supposed to do 30 minutes on the trainer with 3x 90 sec at 80-90%. I snapped my front derailer cable as I was doing my warm-up. I quickly re-strung a new cable and got back on. I was shooting for 450w x 3 but I think I was a little closer to 400w. I haven't had time to go over the numbers. I'm fairly sure I didn't go 30 min either. Had to rush to the shower and off to work.

I looked at my race results from last year. I ave just over 22 mph for 13 miles at ftp 230. The course has been shortened to 10 miles and I am pushing about 297w ftp now. I am probably going to just go by feel on such a short course. The road is completely flat but is coastal and will have some serious headwind at times. I will rok the disc.

wow, shortened the course so you can really pound the bike to oblivion, warm into the run, then hammer the last 7-10 minutes of it? the key will be getting through the finish line, and not before, as close to E as possible.

Swam this morning.  Sprints.  Kicked my booty.  Dark.  Rainy.  Still awesome.

Long run at lunch.  6-9 miles.  Yeah, that's long for right now.  My right calf feels weird.  It doesn't hurt, but it feels like there's a knot (but I can't feel a knot when I press around on it) that's ready to cramp.  Any suggestions?  I've been stretching.  Might need some deep tissue work.

just about 10 min ago now!
(& i haven't taken them off my feet yet-- which unfortunately means I haven't been walking around the office much)

FINALLY!!!

can't wait to install my pedals & learn how to use the combination properly!!

(& i got another free computrainer ride offer.. so i'll be taking them up on that too!)
should be a good-- and relatively pain-free way for a rookie like me to practice clipping in & out!)

Calf injuries are worrisome as they could be prolonged if you exacerbate it nerdjock. You are a runner so I am sure you know whats what, but I would be really careful. I am not doing any intensity this week after that hammy issue popped up. You really need to be ready for the onslaught that starts soon so be careful if you think something is up. Let it calm down in there. Not sure what to say about deep tissue massage as it could cause more problems?

FINALLY THE SHOES have arrived. Now we call all relax. Send us a photo nicruns.

Yeah, I'm going to cut back my runs this week and take it easy.  I wore compression socks to bed last night and that seemed to help.  Ran 5 miles at lunch.  Felt great.  Only a tiny twinge.  I've never had any issues like this before.  I used to get the occasional charlie horse in my calf when I was running only, but never this weird tightness without pain.  Anyway, feels better today.  Wearing compression socks again now and will continue to do so.

Non-tri story: I have a crazy PhD advisor.  Seriously crazy.  Today she claimed that she ate so many black jelly beans that she had been poisoned by a toxin in the licorice extract and has severe diarrhea as a result.  Very nice! Foot in mouth  Training aids in the stress relief of dealing with said nut job hypochondriac.

I don't want to say it is the same thing but when I ramped up my mileage I got a bizarre tightness in one of my calves. I thought was going to turn into an injury but I trained through it. It was right in the muscle and not in a tendon or joint so I figured it would be ok. I did ice and elevate. I haven't had it since but I am not doing near as many miles.

Congrats on getting the shoes finally. I will no longer complain about the USPS . That shipping time sux.

I hate whack jobs, but gotta admit they help me pay for this thing of ours as its a good living. Next time I am constipated I will be sure to hit the black jelly beans! Hang in there nerdjock!

Today I am losing the battle to get to the pool early. I just fight myself. I am not really sure why other than I don't view it as a necessity like a run or bike. Wetsuits make swimming so much easier and I still think the base is there to jump up the distance to 2.4mi without a lot of time. Hoping to get the 3 hour bike in too. May be on trainer again to conserve time.

Hope things are ticking over nicely on your end. Check in when you get some time. Good luck with the calf!

well, the shipping there was a joint effort between the USPS & canada post
(but i'm guessing that the delay at customs was likely the main culprit....)

but ah well! nice to have them in hand!
(& i'll see what i can do about getting you a picture)
they're nothing fancy though!
they're an older model (which explains why they were so cheap-- $90 works for me!)

it's a definite step up from running shoes & flat pedals!
i'm planning on hitting the road tomorrow (FINALLY!-- 1st outdoor ride of 2011!), but i'll save the pedals & clips for my friend's trainer
(less than 2 weeks to go before the 30k event... don't want to risk my parts TOO much at this point!)

Its always great to try new gear out. It feels like xmas, kwanza or hannukah for a kid! Have fun and report back to us. We have all lived and died with those shoes.

If you want to throw some support my way, I threw a challenge down with a BT tri-buddy on the ga board. Hit it up here for further details. Feel free to get in on the action. Its all for a good cause.

There is going to be so much BS thrown around at that race they may have to cancel the swim due to fecal material. That would give you a sure advantage.

Today was a rest day from workout but a long day at work. I did manage to pick up the bikes from the shop. They are ready to roll. I'm thinking about riding it in to work tomorrow if I get a little sleep tonight.

wow.
BEAUTIFUL (but slightly windy) night for a ride.
& fantastic to actually get? back out on the road for a ride after a winter full of spin classes
(WAY more fun when you're actually GOING somewhere, eh?)
i've got lots to work on (in terms of getting more comfortable shifting & knowing which gear to be in at what point...)
?
& i didn't attempt to use my shoes & clips just yet. but hopefully when i do have a bit more time to get comfortable using those, then i'll really see some improvements in my cycling time this year!
?
(that's my goal)
?
& random aside: i really love my sugoi firewall cycling jacket.
so comfy. & love that fabric!

What's a jacket? Some type of Canadian outerwear? It was 80 degrees and sunny here today. Shorts sleeves are too much.

DORK DAY for me.

Short swim in the pool followed by quick change into the full aero-gear and a short ride with 3x 90 sec at race pace followed by short run with 3x 20 sec at race pace. Feel pretty good.

Packing for my 4 1/2 hour drive to Hilton Head.

Sorry I've been away recently. I've had a series of events that have meant that I've taken a break from both training and reporting in. Mainly I've had a really bad cold and cough for the past couple of weeks but also my gran was admitted to hospital after a stroke 2 weeks ago. I live about 250 miles from my family but was travelling nearer to them so able to call in the hospital the past couple of weeks but this meant me driving a lot and all my free time was taken up driving or at hospital visits. I'm recovered now at least but there's little chance of recovery for my gran so I'll still be trying to do what i can so see her over the coming weeks.

Hope you're all OK and the training is going well, I'll try and check in more regularly in future!

Take care, Kate

Kate - Sorry to hear about your gran, but I am glad that you are making time to be with her and that you are feeling better.

Life here has been stressful.  My son is dealing with an as-yet-diagnosed skin issue that has me  climbing the walls and missing some workouts due to doctor appts as well as anxiety (mine - not his, he's fine.)  The biopsy should be back next week and then at least the speculation will be over.

I am still getting workouts in.  I try to double up (brick style, not 2 sessions) at least once a week as my volume is still small.  My husband has been very good with pushing me out the door as I seem to need the motivation.  I said early on that I can only deal with one obsession at a time.  I was talking about training and weight loss, but the diagnosis has become my new windmill.

Hopefully everything will be fine and I can go back to juggling work, volunteering, my husband and 3 kids like "normal".
