Can someone please provide the step by step buttons to push to transition my Garmin 305 from the bike segment to the run segment?  The screens for each leg are set up just like I want, but I'm too stupid to figure out how to toggle from one leg to the other and keep the race together as a whole.  And the manual is just not intuitive to me either.

Oh and please ... with your reponses remember what your parents taught you about being kind to dumb animalsCool.

Added a fun adventure event to my list. Going to team up with my oldest son and do a run, bike, canoe event on 9/3. Only swimming we might do is if we flip the canoe, but looking forward to a little fun with the event. http://www.quickeventplanner.com/17740-BBWLM5K/ in case you want to check it out. One of those things that I couldn't even think about doing if I hadn't discovered this group and regular training for Tri's.

BTW - Gary, loved the "That Guy" story. I can relate.

Very cool about the adventure race, they have one down here and always wanted to do it.

As for "That Guy" I think we a) take ourselves way to seriously and we lose the fun in things b) we worry way too much about what other people think.  I keep reading threads on another site complaining about how people put "70.3" or "26.2" stickers on their cars/trucks.  They have various reasons why they dislike it but my thought process is "I bought the vehicle and I can put whatever the heck I want on it".  Same now goes for racing, I can't afford a $10k bike but if I want to rock the swimskin and aero helmet I will!

Dorm - holding 25mph on the bike is impressive, we now have our bike speed guru!

All ... race report is below.  Overall I am mixed with the results.  The bike course was somewhat hilly and a couple of loooong pull hills just killed my speed.  Gary ... I wanted to just check on the 25mph thaang, so on a fairly long flat on the return leg and pretty much spinning, the Polar is reading 24.7, 25.3 ... NTB.

Saw a big improvement with the swim leg - woot-woot. My running still is simply awful ... just have to keep working.

Have a good day all : Rex Wellness Sprint RR

Dorm, congrats on the race.  Twice I have tried to view your RR and both times the browser never came back.  I will try again later.  24+ avg over several miles is way more that NTB, its pretty impressive to me.  I can hold 23-24 for 1 may be two miles but I am back down to 20 after that.  I need to ride with you to get faster.

Thanks JP ... the link you provided works.

Gary, I looove getting out on a flat road and motoring along ... the speed, the wind in my face, pounding away on the pedals like a diesel engine.  I wish I were a better climber, but the things that make me a better sprinter also make me a worse climber.  Such is life :)

Nice job on your tri!  I'm with Gary, I would love to be able to hold 23+ mph for more than a few minutes.

Hey all!

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing.  Had a bit of a lite week workout wise as my knee has been bothering me.  Instead of distance did some speed work on the bike and the swim.  Until it cools I have just given up on running speedwork.

Question: How many miles do you put on your running shoes before you retire them?

I retire them after 300 miles.  My old ones become the shoes I wear around when I wear shorts.  My older shoes become my sons grass mowing shoes.

LOL, my son wears 9's and I wear 9.5's and we both like Asics (he just joined the middle school cross country team). I get to about 250 miles then they become my everyday sneakers.  Then my everyday sneakers become my "walking in the pasture and feeding the horses" shoes.

LOL!!!!! Your mean "years" right ... how many years do you put on your running shoes before you retire them.  Sorry, I am starting to get more in the groove with running ... just could not resist.

Had a really good 24 mile ride this morning ... just over 16mph avg.  It's amazing how clear and beautiful the weather always is after a hurricane leaves.  On tap for me this week are swim Monday night, a ride-run brick Tuesday and a swim-run brick Thursday.

Ciao all ...

Ciao all ...

I'm with Dorm. Just started running last year using new balance. Picked up a second pair half off this last winter and started using them but have only logged 118 running miles and probably about 20 walking on the new pair. Guessing the originals have less than 200 miles as well. Looking like I will get 2 to 3 years out of a pair!

Well since I just started running (ahem- jogging-slow crawling-) I really have no clue. I used to just wear my shoes forever until I wanted a new style-lol. I am guessing I'll try the 300-400 mile thing but even doing that- I'll most likely get six months to a year out of mine. Pitiful huh. Right now I run (ha ha-see above) about 3 miles, 3-4 times per week. I've just gotten to where I can run the entire time. At that rate it'll take me months and months to get to 400 miles. And I've actually got two pair of shoes to alternate so I think mine'll be good for quite some time.

Just becareful when letting your shoes get too high of mileage.  The interior support will breakdown way before the tread shows visable signs of degradation.  Having a 2nd pair to compare against helps.  My first pair of shoes I let go to almost 300 miles and the difference between them and a brand new pair (of the same shoe) that I put on were night and day.  Yet the outsides of the old pair looked fine.  Now 250 miles is my limit, because of my knee issue I tend to favor spending more on new shoes then on another surgery.

Weather forecast looks like those of us in Louisiana are about to get a whole lot of rain.  I guess my Saturday morning ride is probably going to be canceled and I will be on the trainer instead.  Austin is the end of next month and I need so 60 mile rides and a couple of 10 mile runs.

How big is the jump from pool swim to open water?  The last event of the year for me would be the Lake Royale Sprint.

The 500m swim distance I can do, but I've not hit one stroke in open water, do not have a wet suit and don't have a good place to train for this.  Sounds like I'm trying to talk myself out of it, but my first Tri ever was in March and all total I've done 4 races this year.  The last thing I want to do is get injured or worse - DNF.

Unless, the transition from pool to open is not such a big deal, I'm thinking to pass on this one, train hard across the fall and winter and get ready for 2012.

I just looked over the results from last years race and it looks like its a pretty beginner friendly race as several folks going 20mins.  For me I was pretty nervous getting in the water for my first but once we got going I was fine.  I would say go for it.  Get there early and get in the water and splash around to get acclimated.  The water temps are usually in the mid-70's so you should be plenty warm.  Also its a lake so little chop or current to deal with.  Remember you can always hang onto a kayak to catch your breath and still continue the race.  This sounds like a good venue to try an OWS tri.

Go for it!!!

p.s. remember I just did my first Oly OWS sans wetsuit.  I was fairly nervous but found my fears unjustified.

You can do it.  Just be prepared to get totally out of breath in the first minute or so from going out to hard.  When it happens, stop and tread water for 20 seconds and look around, then smile about what you are doing and get back at it.  If you get gassed again, stop again.  I'm still a nervous swimmer so I try to start on the outside and back of my wave.

Besides not getting a small break every length, it's hard to swim in a straight line so be prepared to look forward every few strokes and correct your course.

Before my first OWS I called a friend who's parents have a house on a lake.  We drove out there and I swam around their cove for 10 minutes.  It helped.  Like Gary said, if you can do that before the race, it helps too.
