I am negotiating with myself as to if I can rearrange this evenings workout (my trainer ride), which in general leads to me missing a workout.  I am a tad bit under motivated to getting out on the trainer.  I keep telling myself different days I can do it but I know me...  I do really good with morning and afternoon workouts but not so good with evening workouts.  By the end of the workday I just want to shut off.  I had too many meetings today to get out during the afternoon though.

What tricks do you guys use to get in workouts when you really don't want to?  I have little issue talking myself into morning workouts, I after all got up, but I have way less success in the evenings.

Guilt.

I struggle with late day workouts sometimes, too...but know the workout is less painful/inconvenient/miserable than the guilt I would feel if I didn't just suck it up and get it done.

I work four 10 hr days so Fri - Sun are great. I have to leave for work by 5:00 AM. I was rolling out on some bike and run workouts at 2:30 AM while training for AZ. That worked as I was training through the AZ summer and even most of my weekend workouts were early. You can find the time just gotta look in the right place. Laughing

I have a pretty good job for the triathlon lifestyle.  I am a Dean of Students in a high school.  I will have 1-2 late nights per week when I need to adjust schedule but usually hit work-outs in the a.m. anyway.  My wife and I switch off 4:30 in the morning workouts and it seems to be a good system.  Summers are mostly free making IM training much easier to accomplish.

I’m curious…if any of you want to share…how does your job affect your training/triathlon lifestyle?

I am an Aquatics Director at a major Health and Fitness center in the Harrisburg, PA area.  Our pool is 8 lanes x 25 yards and approximately 150,000 gallons of water.  Link to pool pic http://www.centralpennfitnesscenter.com/aquatics/  I get to swim in it any time I want.  I have a staff of 15 so my hours are all over the place, being that I have multiple opportunities to train thru out the day.  I am also a certified personal trainer at a major military base in the area as well.

Nice looking joint.  Reminds me of where I swam back in Oregon City with the glass wall.  Course here in Tucson they just eliminate all walls....

I have decided that GatorDeb has been hired by BT to post the stuff she posts to get others to post useful stuff.  The more crazy she is with the posts the better the answers are.

I keep opening her threads and I don't know why. I just want to scream at her to STOP THINKING and START TRAINING. Just go that route for 3 weeks and see what happens.

Fred D - 2012-01-24 7:09 AM Got a nice easy swim in the books for me. What's on tap today? Any topics you want to discuss? Angry neighbors bothered by your trainer? (kidding)

3 mile run!

It's really hard not to go out and ride or swim this week. I have SO MUCH free time! I peaked at 20 miles for my mid-week run total, and this week, it's 9. Total. Over 3 runs. Not to mention, I'm totally jealous when I look at all of your logs!

Maybe I'll hide my quick releases and all of my swimsuits from myself so I can easily resist the temptation to do more

Anyone interested in the MS 150 Ride in the FL Keys? I've got an in with the Bacardi team

As Fred said, a strong mental fortitude.  Competitiveness for me also may drive that.  I don’t have any tricks per say other than I really want it.  Maybe the trick I have is I am thankful I can so that drives me.  The other thing is never give in to the desire not to train.  When the training gets tough you’ll need everything you have.

Yeah, Those rides and runs were all outside. I actually was pulled over on my bike by the local sheriff's officer. He told me they stop anyone out that late (2:30 AM). I told him I was not out late I was up early. I also asked him if the blinking red lights, spandex  and bike made me suspicious. I realize he was doing his job and am actually glad to see them in my neghborhood quite often. I thanked him and was on my merry way.

That's pretty awesome

I've been cheered on by drunks still out on the street around 4:30am here. Bars close at 4:00, so there's usually still plenty of activity until 5:00.

That's bad a**.  As I was driving to the pool yesterday someone was biking without a front light.  I couldn't believe him.  Coming up on him he was totally visible so it is not about that but Tucson is DARK.  And some of our roads are not in the best of shape.  I'd have loved to hear what the cop was probably mumbling to himself when he got back in his car about you being up so early.

Signed up for the 4:30 (~10:18/mile) pace for my marathon on Sunday.

Good idea? Bad idea? Reasonable group to run with? Logs are up to date...

Hey Elaine,

One thing I learned about marathons is any point can be tough.  If the day is yours, your training will reflect in the results.  Your second post you said one of your 20 milers you had issues.  Actually imo that is good because you know now how your body will react to that situation.  You were able to drive thru and finish.  Really that is better than any time.

LOL.  I remember her threads from a year or so ago and now these.  No matter what advice is given to her..most of it very good...she will find a way to just do and justify whatever she wants to do.  I think all her threads go at least 3 pages haha.

I am a Civil Engineer/Project Manager and my office is 1.5 hours from my home.  I usually work 3 days from home though which is great.  I try to make my training as unnoticiable to my family as possible.  I am usually up by 5 am and get my longer workout of the day done at that time.  I am also able to get in a 35-40 minute workout at lunchtime.

I used to do all my longer workouts on the weekend but think I am going to have to switch some stuff around since I like to spend as much time with my family on the weekends.  I am thinking about moving my long run to wednesday and just keeping my longer bike on Saturday or Sunday.

I train between 7-11 hours per week pretty consistently and seems to work well.
