Originally posted by chirunner134 Undertrained and now I had a back ache that been killing me for a week. 4 weeks only my oly triathlon. With not a lot of training, a hellish bike course I am not sure if I am going to even attempt it. frustrating but injuries do happen. thinking maybe I need to not worry about the race anymore and just worry on recovery and weight lose. I still have plenty of time for my fall race.

Do what is best for your long term health. Do not do too much and further hurt yourself. That being said, you may not have to throw in the towel just yet, Stretch and keep up what training you have and  make the decision later. You have until the day of to cash it in. It is a tough decision but don't let the frustration get to you. I speak from experience. It was a pisser to have to not do the tri last weekend. I had wanted to do that particular race for YEARS. Now I have to hope for next year. However, If I did it, there was a really good chance that I would re injure myself, maybe permanently. I caved. I am not usually that wise . Maybe it is true, you gain wisdom as you get older. I am going to be in great shape (that is the plan anyway) for my August tri!

yeah you are right about all of that. I guess I did not miss a race in 2012 but it was so painful I really do not want go through that again. I might do a 5k that weekend if I do not do the tri. At least I will have done some racing in 2014 since I did nothing in 2013 because of health reason. Mentally it been hard for me to come back because its been a constant comeback the last 3 years. Soon as I came back I would lose it and need to come back again. Sad thing it was nothing to do with training, lack of training, or training injury. Well the back probably is now.

Once my back is OK it might be better to focus on my race in Oct race than waste the time for the one 4 weeks away. I guess reminds me of in college trying to salvage a class and ended up failing 2 rather then let the one go and doing well in the other.

Good news is I put on my socks today all by myself. I had someone put them on for the last week.

The family did the Hammonton Sprint triathlon today. 450 yard swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mike run. I had a pretty good race and finished in 1:33:09. I've been slacking on my training the last few weeks. It took me longer than I thought to recover after the half marathon and then travel and work derailed me. After having a decent race today, I know I need to get back into the swing and start training harder.

The whole family raced today. My sons Mitchell and Danny both did their first sprints. They've done some kids tri's but this was their first race with the big guys. We picked this race because they have a novice division and allow any swim aids. Neither used any, and both dud really well. My wife Randi raced right along side Danny the whole race. I am so proud of them for their accomplishments!

The family the "tris" together stays together (couldn't resist).

I think that is such a great thing that you all are participating and creating great memories together. Congratulations to you and your family!

Mike: That is awesome. I found out yesterday that there is a local kids tri here. I think I'm going to see if I can talk 3 of the 4 in to doing it next year (Bethany's too young)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel like I've been post-bombing the thread with daily-ish updates so... Unless there's something big to talk about, I'm going to stick to Sunday Updates...

The scale told me I'm 252.5 this morning. I am not unhappy with that since I took Sun-Thurs to recover from my little bout of insanity last Saturday. I have decided that I would like to run the Mighty Mite Tri (1/3mi, 13mi, 3mi) in Forrest City, AR on July 19th. That gives me 8 weeks from yesterday. So...

Friday, I hit the Y for some much-missed pool time. I did a 200yd warmup and then proceded to try to drown myself for the next 30mins trying to breathe from the left side. I have a pause/glide in my stroke where I am still exhaling, so breathing every 3rd stoke would be ideal... I have a hard time extending it to 4 strokes. I got called out to change my daughter's diaper, and when I went back in the pool... my trunks tore... Since I don't do public nudity, my swim was over. I hopped on the bike yesterday for a planned 30+ mile ride in preperation for the 31st, and blew yet another tube at 3 miles. This is getting old.. Of course I had EVERYTHING with me but the tabs to remove the tire from the rim D'OH! So the plan for today is to hit a bike trail over here in Memphis (I never ride in Memphis), and see how I feel running a bit when I get home later.

Rick

Rick,

Sorry to hear about the tire(s). Makes me wonder if there's a burr or rough spot inside the rim that's could be rubbing and causing the tire to blow?

No worries about the post bombing... Makes up for my lack of posting. Lol

The kids tri's are great. It gets the kids active and engaged in the sport. It's also less "mosh pit" on the swim. Mitchell (17) is going to do the NJ State sprint in July. I don't worry as much about him on the swim. He's a varsity swimmer in high school and is very strong in the water. He swam yesterday's in just over 6 minutes. He was 2nd in his wave out of the water and 55/280 overall. I still worry about Danny (13) in that big of a race. He's going to relay with Randi. She'll swim, he'll bike and run at NJ State.

I learned the good way that if you get a flat check the tire. I got a flat in a half ironman. Lucky for me the sag wagon there after 30 secs so I did not have to speak much german. The pros went to check the tire and it had a little stone. If I would changed it then it would have had a flat several more times. I biked with a girl in one half ironman who had 6 flats. I bet she had a stone or something in the tire.

NAME / username: My name and username are Jeremy Pate.

STORY: I have been a big guy my entire life, and I have always been pretty active. I was an offensive lineman in high school. I was a competitive bodybuilder throughout my 20's. Shoulder issues caused me to have to stop bodybuilding in my early 30's, and that's when I started triathlon. A knee injury in November and shoulder surgery in March have resulted in my weight ballooning up to almost 260 lbs. I have just started training again and my goal this year is to lose the extra 50 or so lbs I've gained while training for my first IM in November.

FAMILY STATUS: I am married with 2 daughters.

CURRENT TRAINING: I am following the beginner IM training plan

2013 RACES/ results: Last year I did 1 sprint, 1 olympic, and 1 70.3, finishing 4th, 4th, and 3rd respectively.

2014 plans and RACES: This year I plan to do the Augusta 1/2 IM in September and the Florida IM in November. I'll probably do some shorter distance races as well but those are the two I'm signed up for.

WEIGHT LOSS: I have weighed anywhere from 340 lbs to 205 lbs during my adult life. My current weight is 256, and I plan to be back down to 205 by November 1.

I figured I'd post this listing here too. I posted in the classifieds but haven't had any takers.

More water or aerodynamic advantage? You used to have to choose, but with the Vision Drink System, you can have your cake and eat it too. It's a super-cool system made just for time trialists and triathletes. It gives you the ability to put two different drinks in one hydration unit and comes in a handy aero design to help you cheat the wind. Which is pretty darn awesome if you think about it.

Composite carbon fiber reservoir tank saves weight and looks amazing
Two separate molded bladders with their own straws let you carry both water and a hydration drink
Drink tubes are equipped with flow valves to make drinking easier
System fits between Aerobar extensions with minimum 55mm of separation (measured inside to inside)
Feeder top for faster re-filling
Un-Filled weight: 450g
USAT and ITU legal

I bought it for $65. My son used it in 1 sprint triathlon. Make me a reasonable offer, add a few bucks for shipping and it's yours.

Why do I always get to places SO early...

I'm standing around waiting with 45 mins until my wave starts. Doing the Tour de Cure 40mi route. Of course, I'm the only one in running shoes and a kid carrier on the back of his bike. It's for my SAG in a bag ... I think I do too much solo riding! ROFL!!
