Regarding cold races--my second tri was in 50-something weather, pouring rain.  The swim was fine since it made the water feel warmer, and I put on a jersey for the bike/run.  However, my feet FROZE on the bike!  And they didn't warm up for the run, as I was pretty darn soggy by then.  I heard a tip from a LUNA Chix gal the other night--she said to put hand warmers into your bike shoes while you are doing the swim. It only takes a second to remove them at T1 and then your feet are toasty for the ride and run.

I always make sure to have lots of layers to put on after the race, as the run usually gets my body pretty warm, but once it is over it is too cold! I am trying to figure out if I should put on a jersey at my next race--it's fall and in the mountains.  I will keep you posted, as I know you are all holding your breath wondering what I will wear!    Every tri this season has been mild temps-the sun hasn't shined at any of them and the starts were all COLD.  I guess the best part of that is that the water at them all hasn't been shocking.  I did rent a wetsuit for the next one, though, as all the feedback from that race says to wear one.

Awesome tip! Never thought of that - I'll do that on Sunday.  I'll be happy if it goes above 50 when I'm on the bike. Surprised

Finished my tri. RR when I have my official results. I finished in 1:59:01 which I was very happy with....I'd set my goal at 2:08. Have no idea where I was in the standings, so I'm looking forward to seeing all of my times. I really learned a lot at this race; can't wait for the next one.

I finished my frigid tri up this morning as well.  I think they said the temp was 43 at the start!  Really cool seeing the steam come off the lake at sunrise! Cool

Left before I saw any of the official times, but I did win the Mountain Bike division this time!

Hey willie,
Congratulations on the well done race! A couple of years back, when I was still in the running mode, I ran the Freescale HM in Austin. When the race started, it was 28 F. By the time I finished, it was 26 F. All of the bridges were iced over. It was quite the challenge to run that one! After that, I have developed a little more empathy for everyone who is out training and racing in the cold!! Great job to everyone.

Generalist question with context: So, this last triathlon, I was looking at my splits and looking at my T1 which I took about 3:17.1 minutes (put my running shoes on instead of my biking shoes and actually started towards the run exit before I recognized my mistake - must have been swimmer's high ). I browsed around to the top female overall, and her T1 was a jaw dropping 51 seconds. Considering I didn't have to remove a wet suit and we had to run to grass that contained burrs, which I did take the time to remove from my feet prior to cramming them inside of some socks, what does one do to improve the transition time? It's always my T1 time that is long. I always lay out my gear according to when it is needed and I did put on bike shorts this time. Does anyone have any ideas about cutting transition times? Not that I want to cut my time to 51 seconds, but just curious as to time saving ideas I can experiment with!
Thanks,
Vanessa

Great job this weekend everyone!!  I will be reading the RRs as soon as the kids leave me alone long enough-I may have to lock myself in the bathroom with the laptop!

Regarding transitions--there's a great podcast called tri talk who covered this in a recent episode.  Here's a link to the transcript:  http://tri-talk.com/weblog/?m=200708 .  I think they have a lot of great ideas, which I won't list here since there are 15 tips.

I'll be racing in a wetsuit for the first time on Sunday, and after I pick it up Thursday will be doing a lot of practice in it, both to get used to it and to get fast at removing it.  Should be fun!

The biggest thing I can say to speed up T1 is to minimize the number of times you bend over.  I know it sounds simple, but it's true.  Every time you bend over to pick something up/put something down, you are wasting time.

I've watched people bend over, put their helmet on.  Bend over again, put sunglasses on, third time, put shoes on.  If you do not put your shoes on the bike, you should bend over ONCE to put them on.

The other thing that helps is to keep jogging when you come out of the water.  I pass people all the time between the water and my bike rack.  You don't have to sprint, just keep jogging.  Your HR will come down.

Those are the generalistics.  but things like putting your helmet on your handlebars with the straps OUTside the helmet.  Glasses with the arms up inside the helmet.  If you have a choice between wearing a jersey in the water and putting it on in T1, wear it.  The minimal drag will offset the time you lose trying to put on a wet jersey.

Hope that helps.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere on this site, but I found this youtube channel over the weekend while looking for some swim drill vids. Dave Scott gives some great advice from transition to nutrition. The only bad part is I wish there was more!

Hey kids. I was just reading the spin class vs. trainer thread on here. What are your thoughts? Aaron and I went to a spin class last winter with a wuss instructor, and I thought riding the trainer was harder. But, I do love listening to Journey with Aaron....The trainer is in my basement with unlimted "Family Guy".....tough call

You two should just have your own spin class with "Endless Love" playing. Wink

The big advantage I can think of to a trainer over spin class is that you are on your own bike. You can get a spin video and do the spin stuff on your bike....or watch unlimited "Family Guy".. SciFi did a Battlestar Galactica marathon and I decided that for every hour that I watched, I spent a minimum of twenty minutes riding like a banshee. Just my two cents

Good luck to all of the racers this weekend! Have a great time and be safe.

How did everyone do this weekend?

I finished my first half yesterday and had an absolute blast doing it!  I have a lot to tell you all about but it will have to wait until I get my race report put together... Let me tell you this, though... BTers are the best people in the world!  I had soooooo much fun hanging out with everyone this weekend.  You will have plenty of evidence, er, I mean pictures to come later.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!
