elbi999 - 2010-07-26 6:51 PM Thanks guys.  I am usually the one being passed so it was a good feeling to pass someone and stay in front of them to the finish line Smile

Laura, that is what I call RACING!!!  Very exciting RR, thanks for sharing.

Ryan and Kerry ... just some personal info--I am the queen of coughing/hacking/getting over coughs/breathing during exercise blah blah blah. Aside from the smoking, I did some permanent damage to my respiratory system by running a marathon when I'd just been discharged from a hospital with bronchial pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infections (in both ears), tonsillitis and laryngitis. (I'm smart. I know everything to do because I've done everything NOT to do).

Yanti, my husband is an ER doc...working in an inner city hospital, he sees all manner of craziness.  One of my favorite stories is the guy who wanted to leave RIGHT NOW, but he was in a hospital gown...naked underneath of course.

Instead of waiting for his discharge (and clothing), he simply made a break for it.  Sprinting down Division Street (in Bucktown...this will mean something to Allison and Ryan...very busy street with lots of shi shi bars, restaurants, and boutiques)...with his bare butt hanging out  wearing nothing but his hospital gown.

Somehow this is the image I have of you leaving the hospital for your marathon...perhaps pushing the still attached IV bag on a pole?!?

For those of you who want to know how it ended up...some debate was given to pursuing him, but they figured he wouldn't get too far so they just let him go...ER folks know how to pick their battles for sure...haha

Oh maaaaaan ... I worked at an inner-city free clinic for four years ... boy I remember the stories, that's a great reminder. Also worked in ER/other emergency settings for several years ... what a gas. When I wasn't pulling my hair out or wanting to hit someone (and not usually the patients, I might add ...)

When I left the hospital, I was flanked on the left by my best friend and on the other by my boyfriend, who took me straight home ... but they kinda dropped the ball on making sure I STAYED home, as I got on a plane the next day ... whoops.

More than one professional has given up on me. Poor things. Dollars to doughnuts they needed professional help after that ...

Okay, okay, I'm not *quite* that bad anymore. (Most of the time ...)

They say that with age comes wisdom.  I'm not sure it's wisdom so much as having already done all the stupid things we could think of and being too busy dealing with the consequences of them to think of newer and stupider (yes, I know it's not a word but I like it so shush) things to do.

P.S. I went swimming this morning for the first time in a month.  Still haven't decided about the race this weekend.  Someone flip a coin for me and if it says I should race please mail me the coin to help pay for it

I love your definition of wisdom. HEH! Funny, I really am still dealing with the consequences in many ways ... ah, I figure when I'm done, it's time to go!

I can't remember where I saw you post about you and your younger daughter, but believe me ... I hear ya.

Congrats on swimming!!!!

I say "yea" or "heads" or whatever on the race. You take PayPal?

I'm just throwing it out there, but maybe (if possible, depending on circumstances and location) each Manatee might be able to pitch in a few bucks so Alison can race?

Do you spell your name with two Ls?

You're too sweet Yanti!  I refuse to take anyone's money to sign up for a race though.  We made it through the financial portion of the mortgage obstacle course so I'm allowed to spend again.  Now I'm just waiting to find out if Hubs has to work Saturday morning.  If he does I'm out, if he doesn't I'm in.  He's hoping to know today but might not until tomorrow.  Fortunately registration is open until Friday.

I went outside this morning to go for my run, jogged across the street and came back in.  The air is thicker than pea soup and I was sweaty just from that tiny exertion.  The run will have to wait until later tonight when it's at least cooler.

Race.

I went for a run Monday during my lunch hour since it was only supposed to be 93 instead of 100 out.  Figured out that 93 is still hot.  Swam an easy 500 afterwards to cool off just to find that there is no cold water in the showers.  Evidently, the pipes run through the ceiling.  Who knew?!?!

Went to yoga today...it kicked my butt!  I love yoga!

The mortgage/financial end of moving is a royal pain!  We are refinancing our rental property right now, and the dude at the bank is driving me batty.  He asked me the other day if we had any more money that we could show in our accounts.  Really?!?  Does it grow on trees or am I supposed to pull it out of my butt??  On top of that, hubb's truck broke down and now the a/c is out at the rental house.  Can you say broke?  That's 2...we're waiting on #3.  But, I'm not supersticious

Please excuse my spelling errors...I've had a long week.

I  hope you're able to race on Sat. Allison (one "l" or two?). Nice conversation going guys. I've just been moving around a lot and getting ready to drive up (8 hours) to my aquabike event on Saturday. It's basically 2/3rds of an Ironman, swim and bike sans run. It will be my longest of each in a race and on the same day thus far.

How's Ryan feeling? Man, there have been a lot of people sick around here, too. Seems like sinus infections and upper respiratory stuff. Kind of soon in the year for that stuff. I hope you're able to race this weekend, too Ryan.

I'll have my ipad with me so should be able to check in with everyone.

Thanks for holding down the manatee fort, Yanti-dear. Hugs -- melon presses --- to you all!

*tentatively waves a flipper...*  Hello, Manatees!  I have survived, barely, the month.from.hell, also known as the month.of.no.training.or.sleeping. Trying not to be too mortified to show my face hereabouts.  I've been reading on and off, but haven't followed as closely as I would like, so sorry for all that I have missed.  I am trying to gear up more for running so I can do a half marathon in October.  It will be slow, but still...  Anyway, trying to get back into the groove.  I've missed you all!

Car-la! Trouble does NOT always come in threes; there's only one of me. (Oh wait--I have two older siblings--never mind). Phew, I am sorry for your troubles though ...

Lynn darling--SUPER GOOD LUCK on the aquabike!!! Makes me want to do one before the IM! Well, I suppose if I do an OWS before one of the Tour de Bintan stages ... that'd be my aquabike. Heh. Well, have a blast!!!

DINEEN! Good to see you back, no tentative, we're Manatees, splash right in What a crazy month for you! Rest. Take care of yourself. As I say ... training will always be waiting for you when you're ready.

Oooh, and I have moved into my new house!!! Holy sea cow ... 16 years ago I came to the U.S. with two suitcases, and wound up with an entire household ... 1 year ago I came to Indonesia with two suitcases and a bike box, and once again I seem to have acquired a household!

Here's the beautiful thing (everything about it is beautiful) ... it is essentially located on a clifftop ringed by beaches (5 min drive down one side for a swimming beach and 5 min down the other side for a surfing beach). And guess what--MANATEES swim by all the time!!! I will have to try to get pictures. They are sooooooooo cute. And VERY good swimmers, I might add. And they take it easy, but can cover huge distances. And they are so loving and cuddly ... okay, I assume they are cuddly.

And manatees supposedly were land creatures that evolved BACK into the sea ... my life makes so much sense now.

Lynn - I am feeling better except for the coughing.  It is worse at night so it keeps me up for a few hours. Luckily my race on Sat is in the morning right? haha  I am definitely going to finish the race...depending on how I feel we will see how fast I go.
Good luck on your Aquabike this weekend.  That's sounds challenging yet fun!

Welcome back Dineen.  Jump right back in...my July was really slow for training too and I am trying to get back onto the bandwagon.

Yanti - Thanks for the advice on the selenium...I am giving it a try.  And congrats on the house.  It sounds like it's in an amazing location!  When can we come visit?  And please don't try to find out if manatees are cuddly from first-hand experience

Aw--sorry about the cough, but at least you survived the family visit --I think you will do fine at your race. The adrenaline and endorphins can work quite well as cough suppressants.

(WHY is somebody setting off fireworks outside? They're so pretty, but the DOGS ...)

ANY MANATEE may come at any time. Feel free to bring your pod. I hope you like cuddly Labradors. I don't have an address (many places here don't), but here are directions:

After arriving at the airport, head RIGHT as to avoid the Circle of Confusion.
Turn right, right in between the McDonald's and KFC.
Go through the first set of university arches.
Go through the second set of university arches.
Turn right at the clock tower. I know, it doesn't LOOK like a street, but the shocks can handle it. I promise.
Follow the "street" through its serpentine undulations--don't forget to look right for the amazing view over the harbor and at the peninsula--and as soon as you feel like you've crested the hill, make an immediate right. Yes, a street this big--double wide--exists in Bali. Crazy. Keep going past the giant potted plant in the middle of the street. No, I don't know why it's there either.
Keep going until you're nearly at the end of the street, and look right. If there is a chocolate nose, a black nose, and a nose of dubious heritage poking out underneath the gate ... you're at the right house.

I love that you live in such a crazy faraway place that you can post directions to your house on the internet and not worry about who might show up.  Heck, even if I tried I'm not certain I could find it.

Ryan.  I'm in.  I'm nervous because my training has been lackluster at best but I'm taking the plunge anyway.  Now off I go to register.  Are you still interested in meeting up when I head down to pick up my packet tomorrow Quincy?

Awesome Allison!  I haven't trained much in July either so it will be interesting for me too.  Plus I'll have to see how much lake water I take in while I am trying to swim and cough at the same time lol. The Dr. said I was no longer contagious though.
Let me know if you want to meet up before or after the race. I'm in wave #3 so that means that everyone that passes me started after I did haha.

Excellent directions, Yanti.  If only I could afford the flight.
