Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() well these guys are not out there to kill civilians. but you might find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time. the first time I heard shots I froze, it doesn't help the run :P the second time though I RAN. I would've beaten Usain Bolt. lol. again. its terrible that we are used to this. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No shots fired on my bike ride today, but I did have 3 super large dogs sneak attack me... I was fending off the 2 beside me and trying not to fall off my bike and then I look forward and the 3rd one was right in front of me stopped in the road (i was going about 17mph)... he hauled out of the way and i came within inches of a head on collision... next time i'm going to pull over and beat the crap out of those dogs! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am still here! I am sure we did. I think we lost more than a few since the start of this group. I got my 5 mile run in tonight and almost without incident. Remember the dog that bit me last week? It's partner came out tonight, after I was told she probably would never come out without the other dog leading the way. Tonight it got within 20 feet of m and stopped and the owner came out and called it back but it didn't leave right away. I yelled at the owner "I will kill that dog if it bites me" and continued my run. I am really tired of running on the snow and slush too. Tonight was about the worst so far this year for running on the slush. I had gotten a bit of a reprieve last weekend when we had some really nice temperatures but then we got 5-6 more inched of snow with ice under it on Monday afternoon. I am really ready for spring. |

![]() Yeah...it's only natural that these mentor groups become smaller over time. Partially the reason I took a little over 20 at the start...rarely do more than 10 stick around for the long haul. It doesn't mean they aren't training...just not active in the forum. I'm actually quite pleased that we still have as many as we do. |

I know how bad they are supposed to hurt and I done want to hurt that bad. I need to do one really bad to provide some real feedback for my cycling. Maybe this spring I'll grab my ???? and do one. I wouldn't suggest anyone start holding their breath until I do on though. ![]() |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() melbel1038 - 2011-02-24 8:41 AM Did we lose a couple of people? Anyway...managed to get my 3 mile run in and 900 of the 1600 meters I wanted to do. I started feeling light headed and ended my swim early. Will see what tomorrow brings. Nah, I am still around. I flew back into Melbourne a week and a half ago and have been trying to find a new place to live. At some point, I'll catch up on all these posts and return to regularly scheduled life!! I hope everyone is training well and having fun! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was wondering where alot of people went to. Today I did a brick workout, I was able to get off a little early because I started early and missed the gym. I decided to do the route I will be riding during the olympic tri. It will be 2 loops and I only did one and rode there and back from home. I timed myself for the loop and managed 34 minutes with a pretty good head wind " slowed my down to 14 miles an hour"on the way back. The ride I did was 59 minutes long and I did 18 miles. After I went for a run and did 3.5 miles in 30 minutes. This being my first outdoor brick I was suprised how bad my hamstrings hurt. I can't wait for some warmer weather it was 38 degrees with a 15 mile an hour wind. Sounds like everyones training is going good! Krystyna are you still planning on moving to Colorado or Utah? |

Yep, the plan is: 1 more semester at University of Melbourne (end of Feb to end of June) visit the family back in Montreal for a couple days and be support crew for my friend's first ultramarathon (end of June) take my car, drive to Colorado, find a place to live in a small town there, but also visit Utah, Arizona etc. (end of June-Sept) and finally... realize that school has already started so return back to Montreal to finish my bachelors (end of August to Dec!) So, the short answer to your question is YES, still moving to Colorado for the Northern Hemisphere summertime. |

![]() | ![]() Doing better this week, got a 37 mile bike ride in yesterday in just under 2 hours, on the exercise bike, not sure how that translates into RW riding but it's the longest I've gone so far... and did a little over 5k monday in just over 30 minutes while dragging my furry running buddy who had already gone running with my wife so it was a run combined with resistence training ![]() what is FTP? weather is high 60's to high 70's so loving work right now, paid to ride around on a bike in a historic city... can almost forget about riding in the snow a couple of months ago... (sorry Dirk hope it gets warmer for ya) Edited by Tripopo 2011-02-24 6:41 AM |

![]() FTP stands for functional threshold power. So basically it's a power test (using a power meter) to guage what power level you can sustain for one hour. The best way to test is to actually ride for one hour...and take your average power. But practically, it's not good to test that way because you basically have to treat it like a race...it's an all out effort, so you would need to taper for it, and take a day or two off to recover after. In lieu of that, what many people do is a 20 minute test instead. Get in a good warm up, then go all out for 20 minutes. From there, the general rule of thumb is to take 95% of your avg power over 20 minutes...and that should be your 1 hour power...or FTP. If you don't have a power meter, you can also do this by HR. And basically that test is your LT HR test...or lactate threshold HR. Basically the same thing. What HR should you be shooting for during a 1 hour max effort. This can also be done using a 20-30 minute test...but I forget the details of calculating it. Knowing what your FTP or LT HR is helps better define what you should be shooting for in races and during interval training. It's also common for you to need to test multiple times before you get a good test. Because it's a max effort, a lot of times you'll start out either too easy or too hard. The idea of the test is to keep a constant effort the whole way...and be totally gassed when you finish. There shouldn't be peaks and valleys in effort where you need to recover or go harder in the middle of the test. Edited by tri808 2011-02-24 10:18 AM |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I started having some pain in my upper left arm last night... came out of nowhere. Feels like I tweaked something. Im guessing swimming is out... not sure about biking... about to try going for a run though. Then I'm going to go by the chiro and see if they can do anything to help... I hope it's not a big deal b/c I already had an off week last week and was hoping to get back on track. Question: I've heard people talking about swim kick and say something like a 2-beat kick or a 4-beat kick. Anyone know what that means? My kick sucks... |
|
![]() ![]() |
![]() The term 2 beat, 4 beat, or 6 beat refers to the amount of kicks you take per 2 strokes. Very good kickers will use more of a 6 beat kick, which pretty much comes down to kicking contstantly. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, there were 24mph winds on my run earlier... it was interesting. |

![]() Don't be affraid to mix it up. If you search for that Grant Hackett video I mentioned, you'll see that he doesn't use the same kick pattern the whole time. I'm sure he's pacing himself...he would probably go faster if he did a 6 beat kick the whole time...but at the expense of fatigue. As triathletes...we should be using the kick for balancing the stroke...not really for propulsion since we still have to bike and run. You may as well gas your arms out during the swim, because you won't really use them the rest of the race. However...if swimming is your strength and you have an efficient and strong kick...by all means, play to your strengths and use a 6 beat kick if it will help you shave time. For most of us that have poor kicks though...a 6 beat kick is just a waste of energy. However, I do think that we should all try to improve our kick efficiency...such as kicking from the hips, keeping toes pointed, limiting knee bend, etc. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I noticed that I kick twice when I rotate for air. That is usually the only time I kick, so I guess thats a 2 kick? I love all them tri talk it helps me with my training and focus. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've noticed that if I am tired I swim flat as a plank on the water -- not good. I need to actively focus on keeping that good rotation which I know that I am capable of. It makes all the difference in the world, and extends my reach by what feels like meters!! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I typically use a 4 beat kick unless I begin to get really tired. It seems for this style gives me just a little better balance in the water. But like J is saying my technique is more than likely lacking. I think I don't kick from the hips properly and I am pretty sure I bend my knees to much. The latter may come from all the kicking I do with fins. I have kicked with fins a lot to develop leg strength from my knee injury days. My PT told me to start swimming back then and I did some research that showed the fins can help strengthen your legs and I pretty much never stopped doing it. Now that we are discussing it it sounds really dumb that I haven't let it go yet. Since we are talking about swimming, I think I am getting back into the pool next week after 3 full weeks off. The shoulder seems to be doing alright and I will start with a shorter base and less intensity for a couple of weeks before adding distance. The intensity will have to wait for another 2 weeks after that. Edit: After watching the video of Grant Hackett, I plan to show it to my daughter for coaching purposes. She was listening to me talk about some stroke technique a while ago and I was trying to explain how the high elbow catch works and she was like "you don't know what you're talking about" cause I have swam more than you. During her HS off season she says shes going to swim with me and it would be a good opportunity for her to correct this flaw in her stroke with no pressure. Edited by DirkP 2011-02-25 6:04 AM |

![]() | ![]() Most of the coaches I've had and watching the few teams I've helped to coach, mostly summer leagues, say the kick should be constant; the beats don't matter so much as a continuous kick not kick a couple of times pause kick some more... and alot of the beatslike J said changes not only on your goal but what you prefer, if it feels natural keep doing it if it is horrible you will proabaly need some coaching to fix it... I normally stay on the high end though mostly because I feel lazy if I'm not keeping my legs kicking |
