Expert 1325 Findlay, OH | Subject: RE: Razorxp & KCgolf RFP group! CLOSED MANDOWN - 2012-02-21 6:47 PM I need some advice on what to do about an upcomming race, Ive signed up for a sprint race on the 10th of March, then I have the first half marathon the very next weekend that Ive signed up for. Im doing the Hal Higdon training program and Im scheduled to run a 10 mile run the same weekend as the sprint, the 10 mile run would be the longest run Ive ever done....Should i do the sprint and when Im done get some more miles in later that day...I really think its important to get that 10 miles in...
I guess it depends what your "more" important race is. If your doing the sprint for time then go for it in the sprint and a few hrs later do your run. If your 1/2 is more important then hammer the swim/bike and relax on the run (pretty short so should be easy). Either way its not an ideal situation if your low on your mileage so don't do anything to hurt yourself. |

Expert 1325 Findlay, OH | Subject: RE: Razorxp & KCgolf RFP group! CLOSED DaveL - 2012-02-22 9:08 AM I almost feel guilty posting here now I have been MIA so much. I would do the sprint, cross the line then keep going until you hit 10miles. Last year I rode my bike to a sprint (only 8km) did the race, biked home then did a 5km run. From a pure "training" perspective I cant say that it is truly benificial but it did give me a good idea of what it was like to run and continue to run after feeling that my body was wasted. It was a good mental work out.
I like your style!! lol I have done that before but without know someones fitness I can't give that advice! Your always welcome to post. How is your new kayak working for you? |

Expert 1566 | Subject: RE: Razorxp & KCgolf RFP group! CLOSED The one thing that I noticed that is kind of strange is that you are doing your longest run 1 week out from your race. I would think you would be tapering for your race 1 week out. With that in mind I would be very careful about pushing too hard at the sprint then running the longest distance you have ever run - especially with your race the next weekend. If it were me I would do your 10 miler either the weekend before of maybe during the week before the sprint. Then race the sprint at a decent effort and call it a day. In my opinion with your longest run one week out the 10 miler is more of a mental goal- if you can run 10 then you can run 13. Killing yourself over getting that 10 and the sprint in the same day is not gonna make or break your 1/2 Mary race. But then again I have no idea how your 1/2 marathon training program is set up. What does he have you doing the 6 days after the 10 miler? After reading what Tim wrote I read your post more closely. I didn't see that your half marathon is the week after your 10 miler. Seems close to me too. If you can move up that 10 miler as he said and do the sprint and taper, that would be a better arrangement than trying to do a 10 miles and then a half marathon in a week. Of course, I am one of those guys who error on the side of caution on runs. My longest for the IM was 2:30 hours. At some point, fitness gains are so low that they are eclipsed by the concern over injury. |

The kayak is good, outfitted well and ready for some spring expedition style trips. My training can sometimes border on sadistic. Last summer I would commute to work once or twice per week. round trip 100miles, I did once sneak in a 5km lunch hour run but that proved to be too much. I ran 30km one morning, rode 30km then decided to make a brick of it and tacked on a 5km run on the end. Training lately has been brutal as I never really have more than an hour. Stress is through the roof and I eat when I am stressed so I have gained 10lbs. Oh well, I am starting to ramp up so hopefully that will melt off soon. I think I will start biking to work in March, it seems like an easy way to tack on 700km per month for the next 2 months. |

Dave, I agree- move the ten mile run up if you can...you will have a much better race going in well rested, especially with your tri right before. Work and school have been kicking my butt lately. I have been very stressed out and have been starting to get sick as a result- still been trying to keep up with training, although I passed on my run yesterday to catch up on some much needed rest. I was supposed to have Friday afternoon-Sunday off from work (which really means I can catch up on school work and my research) but now I only have Sunday, which is when I am doing a 3 hour charity ride. Argh. The life of an athletic trainer. hope everyone else is doing well with life balance and training!

But, I forced myself to go out and run 4 easy miles with a friend. As always, glad i did it. Swimming at 6 am tomorrow. Decided to to an indoor tri at the Indy YMCA this sunday morning. 20 minute swim (count laps), 25 minute bike (average watts), 20 min treadmilll run (distance).

Who ever told you that was not training for an IM! lol I don't think I have ever met someone with more energy if they are training hard, Hence why pro's nap 2 times per day. lol It will get better but just get used to wanting more sleep. :-) |

I am just trying to be in bed by 8:45 every night which is crazy for me. I started lifting again this week. I was really concerned about adding more hours to my training but I missed a paragraph in Finks book and he brought up a good point. He suggests only using machines and not free weights to save time. I was able to get my run in and then got all my lifting done in 30 minutes which was great. Gonna try and get lifting in on Tuesdays/Fridays. I think it will really help me not dwindle away to a stick figure. Long day ahead of me today:

Coach - welcome back glad you had a great time adn I hope you did not deposit tons of $ at the bank of Vegas - because they won't let you have it back. All well on my front I think. Busy week after a couple of days away last weekend. It seems like you take a few days off and it takes you twice as many days to catch up. Hell, it is Friday and for the first time all week I feel like I am back to at least being caught up with everything (work, laundry, etc. etc) I took a bike repair class last night at one of the local bike shops - it was great and I feel much better about having some good working knowledge of bikes and some confidence that I can trouble shoot and get home or get finished if I have any issues on the road. Heading out for a bite to eat with an old golf friend of mine this evening. He contacted me out of the blue and wants to chat with me about getting into the multi-sport life style. He heard from some mutual friends that I was into triathlons and he saw some of my pictures on facebook and now he says he wants to get into it. I of course told him he was crazy and I probably am not the one who could answer any of his questions LOL but I would love to meet him for a beer 4th week taper ends Sunday and then back at it a bit harder starting next week - I think I need a nap already . Have a great weekend Team. KC PS - I hope you are enjoying your last day in the newspaper business Scott - and welcome to the rest of your life - go kick it's A$$ |

As for lifting and Finks plan - I tried it for 1st 4 weeks. Then I realized that i could not keep it up and still maintain good s/b/r. That is the reason for my group nickname! Scott - Good luck with the new start! I will love to hear what you decide on. I looked into ITCA - very interested to hear how the program is. Jennifers - Good luck with your charity ride, let us know how you do. |

Brian - good job on the indoor tri. Did they have someone counting your swim laps, or did you have to keep track for yourself? KC - nice schedule! Have you registered for all those races already? I had a great weekend. Went for a very short run yesterday - we got 20 cm of snow on Friday (almost 8 inches). The wind yesterday was crazy, and there was blowing snow everywhere, so the run was a bit like running on soft sand (alternating with clear patches, and icy patches) - more exhausting than I had planned, but I'm counting on it making me faster once the snow melts. I also stopped by the gym and did some weight training for the first time in forever. I'm feeling the weights today! Today no planned workouts, but my husband and I did go snowshoeing in the woods behind our house for about an hour. We didn't take the dogs, as we were hoping to spot some wildlife. We did manage to find a porcupine up in a tree - he looked us over, climbed a bit higher, then seemed to decide that we weren't a threat. We passed by him, then back-tracked a few minutes later, and he was still there, napping! Hope everyone is doing well. |
