I've never done it before but thought it would be worthwhile to learn it. Do you all do these? Any tips for me as far as practicing this?
I dismount this way. Didn't yesterday due to being surrounded by a bunch of numbskulls who were ALL OVER THE PLACE heading into the dismount area. I was petrified by their bike handling skills, but year it saves you a good 10 or so seconds and just keeps everything flowing. Will google flying mounts like Rudy said. I don't trust myself here. Watched a bunch of guys with rear hydration mounts mangle their bottles doing this in Galveston. |

One thing I learned this weekend is that I am not a sprinter. Never will be. I left my lungs out on mile 2 of a 5k run. Anyway, now I'm having pain when I take a deep breath. I don't have a fever anymore, but I am coughing up gross stuff, and I am having lung pain when I breathe. Throat hurts a little, too. I'm crossing my fingers that this isn't another lung infection (I started Advair for my asthma 2-3 weeks ago, and it wouldn't be unheard of to get some sort of infection). Best case scenario would be another round of bronchitis (pretty common for peeps who struggle with asthma). I will most likely be making a trip to the doctor's if things don't look up in the next couple days.
tasting iron/blood when you were done?? I was hacking up stuff during mile 2 and had to take 2 puffs from my rescue inhaler. My lungs literally hurt. They felt as if they weighed 40 lbs. I had to sit down for 10 minutes after the race because I thought I was having a heart attack. I was probably pretty close to that, as my average HR was 174 but it got up to 185. LMAO The course had some crazy hills. I'm going to see if I can dig up a picture of the bridge I freaking climbed. Good news is that only 3 women crossed the finish line before me (along with 15 or 16 dudes). The guy who won ran it in 18:00, but he said he ran one last week in 16. I can go at a moderate pace forever, but this sprinting stuff is not my thing. If someone said I had to run the 3.1 miles in 20 minutes or I would perish, I think I would most likely perish. Too bad! Anyway, I never want to do that particular race again. It wasn't fun and I'm glad it's over. |

Highest monthly volume to date on both the bike and run. Swim volume was down a tad to make time for the other two. I was so close to having a 500/100 month. I had to talk myself out of doing another half hour on the trainer this morning and then doing a 40 minute run just to get there knowing it was the wrong decision since my legs needed the rest from a heavy weekend. Did 75 on the trainer and 20 in the pool both at low intensity.

Question: I'm new to this whole injury thing (I usually suck it up and deal with it until it goes away). When you get injured, do you call your primary doc or an ortho? Or go to urgent care (not ER)? And congrats Carrie, Scott, and Karen for some great racing this past weekend! |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED So I was trying to estimate my paces for Patriot using the calculator from QT2. http://www.qt2systems.com/triathlon-calculator/310-form.triatlon.html Input: 182 pounds, 6 minute 400 yard swim, 22:15 5K, 250 Watts 20 minute bike. 6500 yards swim, 28 miles run, 150 miles bike These will be about my averages per week for the last 8 weeks before the race if everything goes to plan. I'd also like to lose another 7 pounds between now and then but with 6 weeks left we'll see so I used my current weight which fluxuates between 180-182 on a given day.
Output Swim 01:34/100 33:08 total Bike 20.6 MPH 2:42:43 Total Run 8:51/mile 1:56:00 Total I know I can do that swim pace but I'd rather be slower so I don't bonk by bringing my heart rate too high. I have a great sense of where I'm at effort wise in the pool but open water not so much. I swam a thousand yards at 1:40 pace this morning and wasn't taxed at all but I was nice and warmed up from doing the trainer before hand. Patriot is a very flat bike course but that still seems fast to me with a run to come. If I pace my bike right the run is exactly what I thought I could do. Throw in 5 minutes for transitions and that's 5:17 which is much faster than I had been thinking. The goal is sub 5:40 and I was thinking if I really have a day and the weather isn't too hot maybe sub 5:30. How much stock do you put in this calculator? |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Yesterdays mountain bike race was a tough one. Very dry course, and loaded with climbs. No real long climbs but super steep, and full of rocks and roots. Made for some fun down hills. 2 people pulled off the course by ambulance. One had a broken collar bone, not sure what the other had. I moved up to Cat 2 for this race, simply for the challenge and longer course. I had 46 guys in my age group. We are released 2 mins apart from each age group. That makes for a very chaotic sprint start to a very narrow singletrack. As soon as we got to that, it caused a wicked bottleneck, and dude in front of me flew over the handlebars. I missed him but guy behind me ran over his arm. Ouch! I knew going into this faster group was going to be intense, and knew I wouldn't place too well. But it was def a good challenge for me. 2,500 of climbing over 16 miles. Not sure if that's a lot, but think of technical rocky/rooty hill climbs. It hurts the quads!!!! I am uncertain of my placing, as the results took forever to post, so I didn't stick around. but I believe I am somewhere in the middle of the pack. total time was 1:30:15. Avg HR 167, Max 189. Holy sh*t. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Jen - I'm not sprinter either. Slow and steady, for a really long time, I've got that down! Hope you feel better soon. Kelly - sorry you're having breathing issues. I do not know what having asthma is like, but I'm sure it's very frustrating. Steve - I started skipping going to my primary doctor, only to get a referral to an ortho. My insurance does not require a referral, so I go see the ortho if I'm pretty sure it's something they can help me with. I've had so many injuries I usually know what's going on with my bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, etc. Hope you get it figured out quickly and it's nothing serious. Scott - nice racing this weekend. Carrie - as I said before, awesome PR! Way to go! Rizer - did you get to swim today? Who am I missing? |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Well Karen, great question. I am now using excuse #2 for not swimming. Friday I had kids school event. And today, my other half has a school board meeting. So, now I wait until Wednesday for my first swim in forever. Locally, there is one pool. And for adult lap swim, it's only open M, W, F 5:30-7. Saturdays morning 7:30-8:30. It makes it very difficult to get any swim time in. |
