Hi all,

Just returned yesterday from my trip out to Montana. What an absolutely gorgeous place.  We stayed at beautiful home in the mountains 2 1/2 hours south of Bozeman. The down hills were treacherous.  Winding, no shoulder (roads were open) Had to brake on many to avoid going too fast around the corners.  Top speed I reached was 39 mph.  Thankfully since this was a relay I didn't have to run after.

There were 6 relay teams participating in the long course.  The team I swam for came in 2nd.  The team I biked for came in 3rd. Our teams were made up of women in their 40's and 50's.  The team that beat us was guys in their 40's.  One team we beat was team women in their 20's.   Not too shabby., but most importantly, we all had a blast.

And Steph....congrats on the 70.3.  You can do it!!!!!  Ten months to train...easy peasy.

Sounds like a fantastic time! I love Bozeman. And I love Jellystone. The team competition sounds like So much fun!! Thank gawd I don't get swim panic!! Way to be a tough guy and get through it! 39mph? zoiks!!

Skibummer... you and your sea monsters is hilarious!

Tomorrow is a bike ride... I'm doing 32 miles... maybe try to sneak in a few more... since 36 is my longest and I always like to try and get a few more each time.

Today was long run, I only ran 4 miles as I got a late start. I recorded the Olympic women's triathlon which start just after 4:30am.... I started watching the recording at 5:30.... INTENSE!! Crashes, one person swam on the wrong side of a buoy, then later someone CRASHED into one. GEESH... the bike crashes were awful. THEN a sprint to a PHOTO FINISH!!! My favorite Jorgensen had bike trouble that took her out of any real chance at competing so that was a bummer.... but what a great race overall.

By the time I got myself ready it was 8:15! hot hot hot here in Miami.... but I found a new place to do some running... one block from home with a 1 mile crushed shell path! never went into that park... 3 years and I've always just run by it. huh

Hope everyone is getting some work in... and staying cool.

I loved my bike ride, could have gone further than 32 BUT, kept my wits about me. The long ride is like the long run. Hopefully you get a ride or two in where you work on speed bursts... and maintaining speeds for alternating intervals, find some hills to do repeats... and of course practice going around corners, getting on the bike.... getting off the bike etc. I can post some workouts if you like.

THE LONG RIDE... this is where you just ride. Get in the miles practice changing gears etc. Nothing funny, no racing. Good time to practice eating on the bike if you are training for a longer race.

THE LONG RIDE is like THE LONG RUN. On your once-a-week long run... run slow. 30 secs to 1:30 a minute per mile slower than your race pace. I'm not kidding... you really can't go slow enough. It's a good time to practice drinking fluids, testing your socks, working on you 'tired form'... and other things that can cause you problems (like diarrhea, blisters, shin splints etc.) The long ride and the long run will tell you if your bike fits properly, if your socks are going to fall down (no socks for sprints of course), if that sports drink makes you nauseous, if your form falls apart too much etc.

Today my bad foot is sore, my hands are a bit sore, and the girly parts are a bit tender. I took a gel and didn't get it all over me I drank half my water (should have had more of the two bottles) but all in all I learned a lot and survived it well. Next week is 50. I will probably replace my shoes as the right one is too tight and my foot falls asleep. I can use the current shoes for spinning.

skibummer...loved the "race report".  Some people sure got their undies in a bunch. Really couldn't understand that.  I've never thought of "being chicked" as negative or derogatory. I've used it myself.  I posted a reply on your thread.

Here is a picture of the shirt I designed for our relay.  A bit of a joke on "chicking".

Hi all,

Just returned yesterday from my trip out to Montana. What an absolutely gorgeous place.  We stayed at beautiful home in the mountains 2 1/2 hours south of Bozeman. It's actually only 40 miles to Yellowstone, which we visited on Monday.  Now that's a cool place! Hope to go back again someday.  Was able to get in 3 good bike rides while there and they were the most challenging rides I've ever done due to the hills and the altitude. Altitude made me really sucking for air.

On Sunday I competed in the Bozeman Tritons Triathlon, long course.  We had two teams.  I swam for one and biked for the other.  The swim wasn't pretty.  Had my usual swim panic exacerbated by the altitude. Finally did get it together and finished in 44 minutes. Ug.  The bike......Even if I had been in top biking fitness it would have been tough.  This was the hardest 56 miles I've ever done.  There was an over 2000 foot gain.  Was at 6400 feet at the top.  What a view! The course was looooong climbs embedded with steep climbs.  The down hills were treacherous.  Winding, no shoulder (roads were open) Had to brake on many to avoid going too fast around the corners.  Top speed I reached was 39 mph.  Thankfully since this was a relay I didn't have to run after.

And Steph....congrats on the 70.3.  You can do it!!!!!  Ten months to train...easy peasy.

Hey Suzi,

Welcome back from your trip and congrats on your race.  Two teams, both doing well, common denominator=you rock!

WELL... I grew up near the ocean where dudes were dudes and chicks were chicks. I never heard the term "getting chicked" until I saw it here. Thanks for the support, even though I AM a moron. Laughing

Just heard about a four sport (road bike, paddle, mtn. bike, run) 44 mile relay race at my alma mater in Northern Vermont. I am (was) close to the RD and might ask if I can do it solo instead of as a team. That may be the absolute death of me as it is two weeks after my HM, and I'm not even sure I can toe up to that healthy and ready. And since I only have running shoes and none of the other equipment....

Well, I'm going to the track tomorrow. 200 x 16. If I don't ever log on again, it's because I died at Curtis Park Track. Hopefully they'll bury me under the monument to Florence Griffith Joyner, Flo Jo.

You are not a moron.  Some people are just a little too...take things WAY to seriously...need to lighten up...have a looong pole that has been inserted somewhere...I could go on and on....

The "negative" comments were in the minority.  There is even another thread where the red "scarc" font is being used in reference to people who has a problem with the term "chicked". I think it was the I got fawned thread.

Didn't sleep AT ALL, so I ended up sleeping as long as I could. Took some Ambien weds and last night. I've had these two pills for a long time and decided to use them. So I had a nice workout yesterday and a nice brick this morning. Long time... Biked 20 ran half a mile. WOBBLY legs!! The Rickenbacker causeway bridge was torture.

Nice to be reminded I need to brick and climb several times a week.

Cheers!

New bike shoes and LOOK pedals. Tried them out this morning... very nice. But I won't be able to run into transition in these bike shoes... going to have to learn the heroic flying barefoot transition. Oy.

IT band acting up after a 8 mile ride/4 mile run. Grrrrrrrrrrrrumble. It doesn't ever hurt until I try to stretch and strengthen it.

In the pool yesterday I shard a lane with a guy who was really appreciative of it. Almost like he expected me to be some kind of lane jerk, but surprised him with my willingness to share. All was well. Then, later, a sloooooow lady gets in and proceeds (unannounced) to try and circle swim with me. I almost crash into her three times before I recommend we just split the lane. She says "In the pool I grew up in we'd go up one lane and down the other" I say "Yes, circle swimming is a great technique, but why don't we just split it." She agreed and said she would've never thought of doing that :face palm:  I was under the impression you should inform the others in a lane what your intentions are before you just jump in and swim. We were all very civil, but I was initially annoyed with the near crashes and sudden evasive maneuvers I needed to pull. Lost count of my laps cuz I was thinking "WTH lady?".

My kids are going to my parents house for a whole week starting tomorrow. My plan: Training. Training. Training. Maybe some quiet time with my wife. And training.

Steph, I also have Look pedals. I actually find them easier to run in than the little SPDs. How do you like them on the bike?

Skibummer... do you have a foam roller?  If not, I highly recommend you get one for your IT band issues. I used to have problems with that until I started rolling. I roll every day even when not running.  Works great.

Yup. I guess I don't roll nearly enough though. Urts like ell on the ol' IT band sometimes but worth it. Would love to buy a massage stick too. Used one for 10 seconds and had to leave the store before I could make the purchase.

the stick is great, as is a roller. piriformis stretch also good. there are a lot of good hip strengtheners and stretches on runnersworld.com

some people need more than just the foam roller... there are a lot of things you can do to strengthen AND loosen hips, thighs, and flexors

adductor and abductor strengthening should be a part of your program

I swim with slower people in my training group. I like to pass them... it's fun! and a little annoying, but I was pretty slow once.

I am still a very slow swimmer. And biker. And runner. Cool

Sun is trying to come out, but the NWS has issued another storm warning behind the one we just had.

I have 4 or 5 different IT exercises I do, and about 50ish ab exercises in two routines that I do. Have been falling off the 3x weekly ab routines because work is killing my back and shoulders (not good for planks and other such positions).
