I always wanted to try that. I used to race motorcycles. From what I remember about tires the softer compounds got much hotter. If you had a soft compound race tire on there that very well could have done it. I also worked in a metal shop through college and repaired a lot of journals like that for industrial applications. When we came up with repair solutions it was almost always improved by higher heat tolerance. Sometimes a few degrees can be the difference between damaging the journal or a long life. We used to spray on a ceramic coating at 1400 degrees to protect from heat. No tht was not a typo. 1400 degrees! Yes, I raced in the 80's. It was fun but makes triathlon seem cheap! You are right, the softer compounds grip better and the friction would create additional heat. 1400 degrees is crazy hot! |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED rquinn23 - 2013-02-03 8:38 PM Week 1 (of 30) is done! I managed to hit all of my planned workouts this week, plus two strength sessions at Crossfit. I am struggling a bit with the heart rate zone training, but I'll keep at it and see how it goes. I am feeling a bit frustrated with the swimming--trying to unlearn bad form and work on good form is tough! I know it hasn't been long, but I'm not really used to being a slow learner! I did make a slight break through, though. The master's coach was on vacation and the sub got me to understand something a little better. The regular coach kept telling me that I need to rotate my hips more, and my timing is off. I really feel like I AM rotating my hips, so I just couldn't understand what else to do. But the sub got me to understand that I am not rotating my shoulders with my hips, so she had me practice exaggerating my shoulder roll. She also had me do the finger-tip drag drill to get my elbows higher. We'll see if I can remember these things on Tuesday at my next session. Also--last Tuesday evening at the pool it was about 73 degrees...Thursday it was about 53 degrees...then Friday morning 35 at pool time 5am! But I did it... Here's a link to this week's blog entry.. http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/So excited about rest day tomorrow! Happy training, all. Good post Becky! Did the instructor give you any drills to work on to help with the shoulder/hip roll? Enjoy your rest day! |

I'm catching up on post reading while waiting to board a redeye back to NY. Tomorrow is going to STINK. Got in some good training and terrible eating with 2 outside rides and a long run in an area outside of Las Vegas. I rented a nice road bike (trek madonne 6) and I am definitely getting a road bike before this season starts. And i need to work on my bike handling. I was a total chicken on the downhills.... I hate overnight flying! I used to do a little better with it when I was young, but can't sleep as well on the planes anymore. Good luck today! I love my Madone, glad you got a chance to ride one out there! Sounds like a fun trip Bill. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED jennifer65 - 2013-02-04 3:17 AM I have to admit I just use my normal tyres for the trainer - although I am keeping an eye on it so I know when to get a new one. My club mates think I don't go 'hard' enough to damage anything anyway, ( they like teasing). However, I got my hr monitor in the week and I realized that I don't push myself enough on the trainer - as I suspected. Did about 26 miles outside on the bike yesterday - which was too far for me by about 10 miles. However, it took me about 2hrs 11 mins at an average speed of approx 12.3 mph - which I think is a pb for me. Also I think my swimming is getting a little faster. So, in all I am making improvements - but they are small and slow in coming. I am beginning to resign myself to the idea that I won't get past the swim in my HIM, but I will be fitter than I've ever been at that point..and there is always next year. On the whole I am fairly happy with everything. Jennifer Way too early to think that way Jennifer! Keep swimming and the gains in improvement will come! Nice work on the bike too! Sounds like a good time Bill! Glad you had fun and found all the outdoor fun LV has. Was that the Red Rock Loop you did? I remember hitting 50+ on the back side of that hill, before hitting "the wall" That was fun! The old motorcycle racer came out in me and I just wanted to pedal faster and whip around the turns. My wife was on the brakes constantly though. I had to pick a spot and wait up for her. It scared the BeJesus out of her to go that fast! |

But Red Rock wasn't even the worst of the technical riding. I rode that loop with some very friendly mountain bike racers out on their road bikes. So I got my workout in catching them AFTER the downhills. There's a 34 mile multi use loop from Henderson and along Lake Mead with some insane serpentine downhills and I was constantly on the brakes. |

I got home from work last night at 3 am, then my youngest woke up with a stomach bug at 4 am, so today has been a bit tough. I bagged my planned bike, but did finally do my weight lifting (missed it last week. and maybe the week before. oops). Tomorrow I was thinking about riding to my local tri shop and checking out aero helmets. Do you all wear one? Any advice for shopping? Thanks! |

I would try on different brands to size them. Then go find a deal for one online. Especially for something you won't use all the time. Try to find yourself a deal |

On the whole I am fairly happy with everything. Jennifer Jennifer, like has already been said, there is time to build the swim endurance. 4 months, right? With working on form and getting in consistently, swim endurance can ramp up quickly, especially for those of us who started swimming later. In a year and a half the distance that i can move forward continuously for has increased by about 100x. Can't say that for running or biking :-). You've got a great attitude and you've already signed up. So as long as your concern is finishing before the cutoff, and not a concern of covering the distance, you'll be fine. |

I agree with Bill in how you should approach the swim. Last year leading up to HIM, I only went to the pool a handful of times. Really did not have the time, so my goal was to understand the distance and gain some confidence. In other words, we went to the lake in order to visualize the distance, and swam half of it one time and 3/4 of it another time. This gave me the confidence that I could finish within the time cutoff. |

Are you going to keep the PT dedicated on a different bike or switch out, or just care about power on your tri bike? I switched to the compact when I went with the quarq as well and I'm really glad I did. Tighter cassette on my aero wheels (11-23) and i have a 12-27 so even i can get up them big hills in training. I'm no expert, but think you made a good choice. 50x11 is still a big gear when you are going long.Well I finally pulled the trigger on switching my power meter from the wheel based power tap to the crank based Quarq. I bought the new Elsa model which should be here this week. I made the switch to the compact gears as well. I think it is the right thing to do for the iron distance race in August as that has a lot of climbing. I hope it isn't a big mistake for Florida but I think I can buy just the gears for it. It's 12 degrees here this morning, so this weather wimp is headed to the treadmill for my 9 mile run. Happy Sunday and happy training!!

You will not regret going to a compact. I live in Virginia and with the hills a compact made a great deal of difference in how I felt later in the ride. For Florida or a hilly route, I would recommend a 11-28 this gives you the best bang for your buck. The only draw back to the 11-28 is that there is a gap in teeth at the higher cogs which basically takes you from say a 21 to a 24 then the 28. so you go from a hard gear to a a gear that may be too high and you spin too easy. Hope that makes sense. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Week 2 off a to a good start--my husband surprised me with an early birthday gift yesterday (birthday is not until April)--Garmin Edge 500 for my bike! With the heart rate monitor that looks like it will work a bit better for me than what I'm using now, and can sync with the Garmin 410 I use for running. I don't have it yet, should arrive later this week. Love new toys! My husband is being so supportive of my IM goals--it was really tough to convince him at first (especially when he saw the price tag, I thought he might fall out of the chair). But he's fully on board now. I made a tough decision last week--I quit Crossfit. Not because I don't believe in it, which I do, but since I can only fit it into training twice per week, it was just not cost effective. Especially since I decided to join the master's swim group which is an additional $40 per month. Crossfit is a huge monetary investment, and the owner of the gym wouldn't decrease my rates. He did actually approach me after I told him I needed a discount and said he and another trainer wanted to sponsor me (I don't know what his definition of "sponsor" was) and another triathlete who is doing a HIM if we follow the Crossfit Endurance training method. It was a huge dilemma for me, as I had looked into Crossfit Endurance as a training option. But I decided that I am on board with Fink's 30 week plan, and subscribing to a unique training method for my first Ironman is just too risky. So I joined a small gym that has most of the equipment I need to do Crossfit workouts on my own. I know enough about the workouts to handle it, and since it's a small gym that isn't too crowded early in the mornings it should work well for me. Went this morning for the first time and was able to mimic a Crossfit WOD almost exactly. As for aero helmets, I use one for racing and think I'm able to keep my head in the right aero position to benefit from it. I also use one with a tinted visor so I don't have to worry about sunglasses on the bike. However, there isn't much ventilation. I didn't notice any problems with overheating in 2011, and I did a HIM in October of that year in Florida--I think the temps were around 82 on the bike? But I am a little nervous about 112 miles in Louisville, so I'll wear it this summer on long training rides to see if poor ventilation is a problem. Happy training, all! |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED So I'm doing more thinking about the next bike (road) and what i want to get out of it. I'm going to see about testing out a CAAD10 this weekend. From what i hear, it's a good compromise in terms of a decent aluminum bike that can be raced without going too overboard in price. I'm thinking of a SRAM Force group. Here's where i'm having trouble committing - I have a Quarq power meter on my tri bike. In a perfect world, I'd be able to switch this back and forth. But the Quarq is a threaded SRAM Red crank. So, in order to make them compatible I would have to upgrade part of the new bike"s group and use a bottom bracket converter (extra weight?). So, if I'm going to keep my tri bike on the trainer in the winter and do 90% of racing on it, why do I care about power numbers on the roadie anyway? Probably because I'll do a lot of my local training on it an I'm a number junky... I know I have to figure this out for myself, just thinking out loud. |

So my plan is to standarize all my cranks to a shimano Ultegra on my road and tri bikes. Same lenght on both. Purchase a stages power crank arm and switching back and forth will be as easy as changing wheels. Here is the link to their product. Price will be way lower than a quarq. http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Stages_Cycling_preview_3349.html |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED ramiedd - 2013-02-05 9:19 AM That thing is pretty cool! And i like that i dont have to commit up front, when I already have to shell out for a bike. I'll go without for a while and if I find I'm missing those numbers, can always switch out crank arms later. Who knows, by then the mythical vector (unicorn?) May be out...bdenehy - 2013-02-05 9:01 AMSo I'm doing more thinking about the next bike (road) and what i want to get out of it. I'm going to see about testing out a CAAD10 this weekend. From what i hear, it's a good compromise in terms of a decent aluminum bike that can be raced without going too overboard in price. I'm thinking of a SRAM Force group. I had the same dilemma, I did not want to worry about switching cranks, but also wanted to flexibility of using any wheel. I sold the Quarq early in the year and kept the power tap for now. So my plan is to standarize all my cranks to a shimano Ultegra on my road and tri bikes. Same lenght on both. Purchase a stages power crank arm and switching back and forth will be as easy as changing wheels. Here is the link to their product. Price will be way lower than a quarq.http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Stages_Cycling_preview_3349.htmlHere's where i'm having trouble committing - I have a Quarq power meter on my tri bike. |

CLOSED rquinn23 - 2013-02-05 8:59 AM Week 2 off a to a good start--my husband surprised me with an early birthday gift yesterday (birthday is not until April)--Garmin Edge 500 for my bike! I am sure it was a tough decision, but I think you will find that it was the right one. Obviously the financial part was a factor for you, but I think having the ability to insert it in your training schedule appropriately will be even a bigger benefit. One thing I have found over the years when it comes to merging plans from different sources is the recovery weeks and getting them lined up. Controlling your own strength training and crossfit workouts, you can make sure you take the recovery weeks at the same time so you get the full benefit of the recovery. 30 week plans will make this even more important (you were planning on taking recovery weeks in both weren't you? ). I was actually thinking about that this morning as I am traveling this week through today and haven't been able to do a lot of my strength training or the classes I like to do. But it occurred to me that it is a recovery week in my plan and cutting that back some is probably a good thing. I don't have an aero helmet but have been considering it. For at least 3 of my 4 long course races this year, heat is a consideration, and the 4th could be as well. I do like the idea of an attached visor though. |
