Thanks for the info Tim. I've heard that Norditrac's are pretty good. I'll keep that in mind when we're shopping for them. Usually there's pretty good sales on treadmills after the holidays so I'm waiting for that.

Caius - don't you already run on a treadmill at the gym?  Save the money, buy an i-magic!!  I was riding in Italy a couple of days ago, and this week I'm planning on riding a bit in France.  This may soon replace my Garmin as my best purchase.

Yeah, I run on the treadmill at the gym, but I can't always be guaranteed to be able to take my lunch hour so I often miss sessions. Plus, with a treadmill at home I could run in the am/pm or if it's cold/raining outside and still get a spin session or swim in at lunch if needed. But the biggest benefit really is that I'm hoping that my wife would start to slowly become active; she's asking for the treadmill. It's a win-win.

Timmeh! - 2008-12-09 7:58 PM Hey Neil, have you rode up Alp d'Huez yet?

Nope - but I'm planning to tomorrow morning or this weekend.  It's on one of the Real Life Videos that I've got.  I get the impression I'll be in a world of hurt, but that's ok.  It won't be quite like the real thing since my trainer maxes out at 4% grade, but I don't think I'm going to be asking myself - gee, I wish this was harder!

I was checking the i-magics out today online. Looks pretty fun!

OK, so my lovely wife stated emphatically that she did not want a new bike for christmas. She is definately interested in doing a couple of sprints with me this summer, but insists on riding her fat tired comfort bike.

Well, I stumbled upon a 2008 slightly used (300 miles) QR chicqilo that I just couldn't let go. I know it will fit her, because we stopped by the LBS a while back and she actually tried that model out.

So, she said she didn't want a NEW bike for christmas. She's getting a USED (but like new) bike for christmas.

Here's a pic

It's a sweet bike Timmeh - but I think you're playing with fire.  Wives never seem to appreciate the semantics of a statement when it's used against them.  Let us know how xmas goes, I'd also like to know how you wrap it and hide it uner the tree.  Wink

Timmeh! - 2008-12-09 7:58 PM Hey Neil, have you rode up Alp d'Huez yet?

Tim, this is for you.  You can tell when I hit the swichbacks because my power (green) drops and the cadence (purple) increases.  I rode this at -60% slope, so I think my average gradient was around 3 - 3.5%.  Along with the graphic display the software gives your data per second for the total ride - you can export it and then take a look at specific points that you may be interested in.

Neil,

That is so cool. I too, am drooling over all of the data! How was the virtual reality scenery? Did you see Lance up there anywhere?

Your numbers look quite impressive as well! That machine will definately make riding inside this winter fun and useful.

If I ever come across one, I definately want to try it out. There are very few dealers here in the US, none of which are remotely close by.

On the subject of numbers and watts, has anyone ever looked at this: http://www.kurtkinetic.com/calibration_chart.php

I ride on a cycleops fluid 2 and plugged in the numbers for 18mph and came up with 285 watts. I have never had the pleasure of using a power meter, but that seems way too high.

That is pretty high but certainly achievable for short bursts. If you could sustain that power output over a long period of time you'd be quite the bike uber stud. I did a quick check on Google and came across an article that said that Floyd Landis averaged 235 watts over the course of TdF.

Thanks Caius. It certainly looks like the formula is flawed as I am no where near uber stud status! (but i'm working on it )

I have a Precor treadmill and have used it for 10 years.  The calibration might be a bit off but it works and has never needed repairs.

I'm going to be running around lots in the next few days getting ready to leave the country, so I just wanted to wish everyone happy holidays!  Enjoy the food and festivities and talk to you in '09...

Imagine a little Devil sitting on you shoulder telling you - you don't need a treadmill, you like to run outside, is your wife really going to use it???  But the i-magic, now that's a different story, think of all the fun you could have.Innocent

Timmeh - this is no VR, this is the real deal.  I couldn't manage to capture a shot from the video this morning, but this is a still shot from another video of a climb in Italy that I can ride.  You are riding up the "real" mountain, passing "real" people who are either a)struggling or b)walking.

I can't seem to quit posting right now!!  Timmeh, I know there are some calculators out there which will help you figure out your power.  The Kurt one is designed for their trainer, but you may find one on the Cycleops site, or they may be able to point you in the right direction.

For what it's worth I tested my power a week ago and got an FTP of 261 (20min test and 5min test), which means I should (in theory) be able to hold that power level for 60 minutes.  But in the end, it all comes down to power / weight, and what's your power per kg.  Right now I'm around 3.7, and over the winter would like to try to bump that up to over 4 w/kg.

Check out this link for an idea of what the power numbers may mean (this is comparing cyclists as opposed to Triathletes).  http://www.cyclingpeakssoftware.com/images/powerprofile_v4.gif
The i-magic will be a great tool over the winter, but the wattage may not be 100% accurate - I don't think I'm quite this strong, and don't have a way to validate against a real power meter.  But it will give me consistent numbers, and those I can compare over time to see how I'm improving.
