Had an interesting 10 mile run this weekend. Lost my car keys early during the first loop at a local park. Had to modify the loop several times to get the run in while looking for my keys. I ran into a group of Special Olympians (they were there for an event) and enlisted their help. As I kept passing back and forth the Special Olympians would yell "Find them yet?" I shouted "no, still looking!" ....."Us too!" they would reply. Stupid as it sounds, it was quite a touching experience. Eventually the keys were turned in at the Special Olympians' Event tent. Not a stress free run, but a run that enriched my life.

That's a great story, Phil.  Experiences like that help us all to remember to keep a healthy perspective.  And...glad you found your keys!

One more thing about stroke count -- check out this link.  Indeed, that site in general is really great, in my opinion.  Apart from my occasional swim coach, I've learned more from that site than anywhere else.

Hey everyone.  Last tough workout this week this evening with a 60 min. run.  First time in a long time I am feeling a bit sore in my legs.  This next week plan has me turning it down some in time and distance; recovery week.  Kind of looking forward to it; need a little break.  I am hoping for some decent weather to get out on the bike for my rides instead of morning Indoor Cycling Class.

New used wheels should be here on Tuesday.  : )

Have a great week everyone.

After a rough start to the month, I achieved my secondary goal of rehabbing my knees so that I can actually train again without pain (I'm just happy to be able to walk again without pain... :-).  Despite taking two weeks off, I did manage to eke out a 1.5 lb weight loss.  I didn't hit my goal of 4, but everything is moving in the right direction.

My primary goal for March is to pick my volume back up to sprint-level distances with a secondary goal of losing 4.5 lbs (this would bring me to my initial target weight).

My first race is on May 9 - 69 days and counting.

Have a great March everyone!

Got back from Mexico yesterday.  Not a bad week-end and I got a few workouts in, including my first swim in months.  I felt like my swim fitness would still be good and it was in the cardio sense, but my upper body struggled to maintain any kind of pace at the end.  The timing would be great right now to start swim lessons, if I could just find the time.

Weighed in at 216 to close the month, so I missed my goal by a pound once again.  Amazing that in the 9 or ten weeks between Hallow'een and New Year I put on 13 pounds, but in the ensuing 8 I've only been able to drop 8.  More proof that it's easier to pack the pounds on than get 'em off.  Still, in that same interval I do feel like my run has improved a lot, I've added a little muscle, improved my core and ultimately I'm considerably more fit now than I was at this same time last year.

Michael, thanks for the link to the Swim Smooth site. Site looks very informative. Did a quick scan around looks like I'm going to be improving my stroke even more

On the negative side, I think I have a bad problem with my left foot, in the arch. I don't like the feel of this pain I get just from walking. It's been gradualy getting worse, I think a month now. Think it's time to see the doctor. Will not be doing the 30K race at end of March.

I guess I can ramp up my biking now that I'll be reducing, maybe not doing, my running.

On the positive side I do have three months before my first sprint, hopefully that will be enough time to recover.

Sylvain...I thought about going to the Dr. as well when my achilles tendon was acting up.  I instead went to a therapist who specialzed in running (at my local running store).  The gentleman there is a massage therapist who uses Trigger Point Therapy.  I have found it helpful with managing the pain I get from my achilles tendon after running.  My pain seems to be from my calf area and the tightness and tension of this area.  I was worried the Dr. would say stop running so I sought out something that would help while I continue to run and be able to manage and provide prevention as well which Trigger Point does for me.  Something to consider and look into or even ask your Dr. about.

Sylvain, sorry to hear about the foot pain.  Is it worst when you get up in the morning, or constant all day?  If so, plantar fasciitis
is a likely cause.  In any case, this isn't an awful time to take a week or so off -- it is still very early in the season!

I have an new idea for how to do March goals -

Rather than sending me a message with your goals and progress, let's do the following:

- On your training log page, post your goals and progress.  This is a logical place for them to be anyway.
- You can set more or less than two goals, but each Sunday night I'll grab the first two goals / progress and post the results in our progress table.
- You can see an example on my training page

Good plan, Stu.  I've changed mine.  I AM going to get that 3x/week core this time!  And I'll start working on my lack of balance in leg strength.  The latter is probably a longer-term project, but I'll try to get it going this month.

It's not plantar fasciitis, at least I don't believe so. I generaly feel it when my arch collapses during walking or running. I can actualy press on the end point where I think the attachement is and feel sharp pain. Same foot last year had a problem which I originaly thought plantar fasciitis but was not, I was getting sharp ripping feeling when getting up in the morning but never bothered me during day or runs. That was closer to the front of the arch, this time it's further back and feel it during walking and running. The feeling I get from it is sharper, I'm worried I have some tearing. Last year I skipped the DR and just did physio. I think this time I need a deeper look. Before I moved I had access to some good sports DR, but can't seem to find any in my new city.

Good morning!
Stu- My March goals are up on my training log page.
This has been a rough week for me. Luckily its a recovery week in my 20 week program.
Both my kids have been sick since Saturday. And, I have a great Uncle that I love dearly, who has just been placed in Hospice care, with no more than 2 weeks to live. Uncle Pete just celebrated his 90th birthday. He says he's ready to go, except he doesnt want to leave his wife of 68 years.

Ugh.  Sorry to hear that.

Work troubles continue here too...  I just got an email from my 'boss' (several times removed) saying that the state just cut us another 20%.  Our 'state university' now gets about 10% of its budget from the state.  I've got to go through our department's budget and find 20% more to cut.  I am depressed as can be because right now I cannot see how we do that without losing some teaching faculty -- and guess who gets to tell them?  That's right, not the state legislators who just voted to decrease property taxes on vacation homes and cut university funding.  Me.  (Of course, it's ten times worse for them.)

Nice, now I know where to buy a vacation home for winter training. All kidding aside, it's pretty sad how politicians think. "We need to encourage more rich people to buy homes in our state therefore we will need to take away education from our kids"

Sorry to hear that Michael.  Karen (my wife) is facing the same scenario at UVa, though more on the receiving end.  I don't envy the choices you'll be making.  I've had to face that several times with my business and there's nothing worse.  We're looking at some really drastic education cuts locally as well (and our county is currently 3rd lowest in state per/pupil spending).  Anyway you slice it, I'm not very excited about the future I see here in the U.S.

The exercise helps though... clears the head... provides a feeling of accomplishment.
