wgraves7582 - 2010-04-08 8:54 AM Tim -

I know I should not have but I just ordered a 24-36 front rings for my Felt and woodchipper bars.  I am switching them out and training on it for the next 2+ weeks and it is going to be my TransIowa rig.

My thought process is such as maybe I am building an excuse for failing if I ride a different bike than I had planned on and I truly hope I am not.  Many people had mtn bikes last year.  I am going to run a narrower tire than I have on right now and believe that the bike will actually help me last longer!

Between the front shock, thicker tires, and different geometry I am feeling confident that I am crazy but I think it will work.

Does this have any chance of making any type of sense at all?

Bill, what is the elevation profile like for the race.  Call me naive, but I think of Iowa as pretty flat.  If I recall, the race is primarily gravel roads too.  I think you will be fine, just might not be using the best tool in the shed for the job.  My main concerns would be rolling resistance and the more relaxed geometry like you stated.  While this will definately provide good training for the CDR, I was under the impression that the Trans-Iowa was an "A" race for you.

What was the thought process behind the 24-36?  Are you worried about out running the top-end on these rings?

rnihill - 2010-04-06 9:12 PM Got a run in tonight on the Y track and then got my swim in.  I had fun racing the guy I shared a lane with.  He looked not too slow from outside the pool so I'm pretty psyched!

Your swim sounds better then mine! I had to share a lane with one of the MANY crabby old men we have at our pool. He refused to acknowledge me in the lane so I had to circle swim and every time I would try to pass him he would speed up or move to the middle of the lane and not let me pass, we would get to the wall at the same time and he would not let me pass. I was getting really pizzed seeing that I only had a 500 to swim and I was in a hurry, finally got him to stop long enough to ask to pick sides and that I would be only 10 min tops....he let me know he has been swimming for over 50 yrs and he ONLY circle swims, it would be to difficult to just pick a side,  So circle on lady! A_HOLE! I got out out and the mom/daughter that were in the lane next to me said they were done and I could have their lane....

brick94513 - 2010-04-07 9:00 AM Good morning "A" team!  Caught a case of insomnia last night.  Woke up at 5am and couldn't get back to sleep, so I thought I would try to sneak a west coast post in before Bill.  Hmmm... no such luck!

Must be something in the "A-Team air".  I had a very rough night's sleep, which after a double-up workout day is very uncommon.  Maybe I'll curl up under my desk and take a nap, George Costanza-style!!!!

No kidding!  I woke up in my daughter's bed around 5 am.  Both kids have been waking up a lot lately.  So often, in fact, that I apparently don't even wake up to go check on them.  I just crawl into their bed, I guess?  I was too lazy to actually get out of bed and go back to my own bed.  But afraid I would oversleep without my alarm.  So I just laid there thinking of every thing I have to do today...

But we did have exciting news this morning.  My oldest daughter was complaining her teeth hurt.  Turns out she has her first loose tooth!!

Cool - you do believe in the tooth fairy right? - LOL

Absolutely.  Although, I have no idea what the tooth fairy pays these days...  I have a feeling it's not the silver dollars that I got when I was a kid.

Hahaha... The local tooth fairy leaves $5 around here.  I wish she would of been around when I was a kid.

ouch! Our tooth fairy leaves $1!

wgraves7582 - 2010-04-07 12:15 PM I have an awesome story:

I get home last night and my son is making a grilled cheese.  I ask him to make me one.  His comment - Why didn't you call me from the road and I would have had one ready for you (I was riding 1st of all!).  I tell him come on make me a sandwich.  So he does after he cut his in half.  As he is making me mine I steal one of the halves of his and stuff it in my mouth.  He turns around to leave and goes hey????  I look at our dog and blame her while still chewing!

We laughed so hard.  I offered him half of mine but he didn't want it!

Later he made me payback by letting him have my cereal for a snack instead of his.  Yes I have my own cereal and they get in trouble for eating it

I have an awesome son - just want you all to know

Cool! ...I have my own "food" too that they know not to eat!

Tim - here is my bike specs.

Thanks for any input!

Bill, in my opinion, that's a great set-up for the CDR, AZT, or any other bikepacking event.

How to your like the Avid brakes?  I just ditched mine for Magura Martas.  I had the Elixirs and just couldn't get them to stop modulating.  Not to mention, the brake howl.

The bike is fully functional as-is.  However, if you are looking for specific upgrades, I would mainly look at the drivetrain.  I prefer SRAM over Shimano.  Again, personal preference.  But, I would look into SRAM X9 shifters, rear derailleur, PC-991 hollow pin chain, PG-990 cassette, and probably FSA cranks since your going with only two rings.  2009 X9 components can be found pretty cheap at www.pricepoint.com

billsorg - 2010-04-07 12:42 PM I got a 1 mile swim in at lunch.  I was thrilled to finish that 72nd lap and look at the clock to see it only took me 41 minutes.  I was expecting closer to 50 or maybe an hour.  Finally starting to feel the stroke coming back after the offseason.  Woot!  I just ate a huge plate of rosemary chicken risoto from our cafeteria.  It was surprisingly good.  2:30 food coma, here I come!

P.S. I love swimming at the Y at lunchtime.  There is never more than 1 or 2 swimmers in the pool at that time... ever.   I've heard a lot of stories of people fighting through crowded lanes at their pools.  It's so nice to get a whole lane to yourself for as long as you want.

Ours is usually quite in the early afternoon but lately it has been busy!

pdbman - 2010-04-06 12:18 PM Crazy night at the pool last night.  Some lady was "teaching" some kids to swim in the laps lane. Basically taking up space holding on to kick boards. "Patience. Open plunge closes soon and it will be just lap swimmers." Then I look at the water and its cloudy. What's up with that?  Jump in and the water feels a little cooler but I brush it off to me being cold because of the snow storm. I start swimming and get about a third of the way when I hit this wall of warm water. That's strange. I guess they were putting fresh water into the pool and the way the "current" is in the pool, it creates a wall of warm water just before you get to the area where the water is coming in. Not too bad going from cold to warm but if I wasn't paying attention it would take my breath away when I would go from the warm water to the sudden cold. Plus for the first ten minutes until they cleared the pool I had to actually change lanes back and forth as people would keep drifting around. Some life guards are pretty good at keeping the lanes clear for lap swimmers, others are just too timid to say anything.

Paul you still don't know what makes the water warm???

Yeah.  Its the pool heater that makes it warm.

Denial can be a good thing.  Wink

I love swimming at lunch too. No pools close to work but I do get to work from home 1-2 days a week and love to go swimming at lunch on those days.  Makes it easy to get in an extra workout.

It took him a while but he learned

This morning I hit a warm spot and all I thought about was Paul - I spit the water out 10 times after that lap !!!!

LOL!  My pool was actually really cold the other night.  But all I could think the whole time was about this post and "I REALLY hope I don't hit a warm spot!"

Isn't it scary how BT effects you! LOL

Hahaha, I think I'm avoiding swimming altogether until after my marathon Tongue out  At least if I hit a warm spot in open water, I can convince myself that it's just the "current" or something.

Sorry Missy...  warm spots in the open water a also pee. Foot in mouth

Oh, I know!  I just have an easier time convincing myself that it's not Wink

Yes but fish pee is different all they drink is ocean water!

We have pop, water, alcohol - ickky!!!

I read this too fast at first.  I thought that you were trying to say that pop, water and alcohol were ickky...  I couldn't figure out how THEY were ickky and what the heck you DID drink!

I think my brain needs a snack...

I expect everyone to work hard and keep the posting going in my absence.  You should be able to get up to at least 90 pages.  I have noticed that we have slacked off a little lately.  We were on page 12 at the end of the first day and we're only on 45 now. I'll even miss Rhoda hitting her 500th post. Talk about missing out on a once in a lifetime event.  Well, have fun everyone and I'll see you next week.

So, we had a this foot specialized doctor type at work today.  He took scans of our feet which basically show where you are placing the pressure on your feet when you are standing.  The idea being that ideally pressure shoudl be placed on certain parts of your feet and that anything other than that puts pressure on your back, legs, etc.  Red showed the most pressure, yellow the lightest.

My feet were basically ALL red.  Very little yellow.  He said that I basically have no arch support in either of my feet.  Obviously, I "need" orthotics that can be customized based on my feet scans taken today.

So, of course he's trying to help his business.  I'm sure the bulk of the people that came through his line "need" orthoctics from him.  But on the flip side, maybe that would solve some of my feet, ankle, calf, hip, lower backpain.

Hmmm....

I see Dr. Scholl's has a similar device that they're advertising on TV these days (shows you where the pressure points are).  I think they have them at most Wal-Marts.  Perhaps you could try one of those to see if you get the same result... kind of a second opinion for free.

OK... NOW I'm signing off!!!

They called a meeting so I have a few minutes while I'm on the conference call. Its really going to throw my day off.
As far as the orthoctics goes, I've known a few people that have bought them, most recently my wife.  They were all sceptical, but absolutely love them now that they have them. My wife had experienced a lot of foot pain recently.  She had problems sleeping because of the pain. She finally went to the doctor and he suggested the orthoctics. She can't believe the difference.
