PennState - 2010-05-01 10:40 AM Yeah, Chris is out. I actually think he was hoping for a faster swim than that. I suspect the wind makes the swim there pretty difficult.

Go Chris Go!!

x1000. Go Chris! Temps are supposed to be 68-72 deg., which is pretty good!

Chris's bike splits have been updated

BIKE SPLIT 1: 22 mi22 mi (1:35:32)13.82 mph
BIKE SPLIT 2: 66 mi44 mi (3:08:02)14.04 mph

phxphotog - 2010-05-01 3:28 PM Thanks for the advice. I also am looking to make this a long term lifestyle and don't want to burn out or get injured. Being a journalist I come from a competitive environment and even played competitive xbox for a few years. Yes, there is competitive xbox (Call of Duty series to be exact). I just always need an outlet for my a type personality and exercise was always that for many years until I got my 1st job in tv news. Now that my career is on auto pilot, I need to get back to the exercise thing and I enjoy tri's because they are a challenge.

I have not been disappointed in my swim or bike times so far. Been a little disappointed in transition and run times though and I will work on those over the next couple of months. As soon as Tempe Int'l is over in 2 weeks then I'll seriously start to look at 1/2 IM training programs. So far I don't have any close friends that have committed to doing the SOMA 1/2 IM in Oct but I keep working on them.

Going for a 20 mile bike ride and then finish up with a 5k run. My goal this month is 6 rest days.

Hope everyone is having a great training weekend.
Ha, the Call of Duty reference reminds me of the TV show "The Office" when they were really into the game except for Jim. Anyone watch that show?

I watch it.  It is very funny!

Go Chris!!!

After a long but successful day with work meetings I picked up a rental bike (nice Specialized Roubaix) I managed to sqeeze in an hour of hills and wind!  I needed it and it was fun!  Tomorrow an early run and a long bike before returning it.

Swim smarter, not harder....  Some people waste energy pushing themselves only to get very little gain.  If you're BOP then working on getting more efficient would probably get you a better time than pushing yourself.   If you're going to push yourself, does that mean you're going to increase your hand speed?  Then try not to sacrifice distance per stroke (hard to do in OWS, though).  Are you going to kick harder? Then make sure you don't have that nasty runners kick! It'll just create more drag.

Good for you for thinking about pushing yourself!! Just be wise about how you go about it.  The swim is tricky to figure out how you'll push yourself.  I typically do this by increasing hand speed, without sacrificing too much distance per stroke (depending on waves & people) and I try not increase my kicking toooooo much.

dharris13 - 2010-04-29 11:12 AM

I have a pretty general swim question. For my HIM distance race i am unsure how hard to push on the swim. In my past 2 i have generally taken it nice and easy. yet for some reason i want to try and push a little harder for this one. Thoughts? I am a BOP swimmer incase that helps.

DOOOO IT!!!!!!!!!!  Train smart.  I love the enthusiasm.  That's the great thing about triathlon...you learn where you can improve and then GO AFTER IT!!! =)

phxphotog - 2010-04-29 3:32 PM So I have been disappointed in my run times for the last two tri's that I have done and I have spent some time trying to figure out what is going on.

1st...I went back and looked at my logs and noticed that I took 6 rest days off in Feb (not bad), 15 days off in Mar (was sick but that's 1/2 the month) and Apr (10 days so far...too many).

2nd...I really spent a lot of time on the swim in the 1st 3 months of training. I was struggling with the swim at 1st and after I got better I spent a bit more time working on being comfortable and a little OWS.

3rd...When I did run I did mainly 3-4 miles max and only half of that was running.

So after looking at all my training logs I have come to the conclusion that I have just not trained enough. I have not put in the amount of time or effort to get better, especially on the run. I also have spent some time hiking and walking on the treadmill that I could have spent biking or running. Over the next 3 weeks I'm going to really try to get my 5k run down to about 30 minutes. I know that is slow for some of you but that is the goal that I have set for myself. After I finish my sprint on May 16th, I'm going to go into 1/2 IM training for October.

In the 1st two triathlons, my goal was just to finish but now I want to start to whittle my time down on both sprint and oly distance races. I would like to be able to do the 1/2 IM, not just finish. I have come to the conclusion that I need to stop making excuses and get the job done through training. It starts tonight!

I just sent this to Fred...but here is a brief race report as i am too lazy right now to really write one. here are the impotant (to me) details.

It went amazing!! I am still trying to wrap my head around how i did so well..and i cant come up with how. I PR'ed the swim by almost 2 minutes...and PR'ed the run by almost 10 minutes. The course was HARD HARD. I really just cant understand how i did so well for myself. I Beat my 70.3 PR time by 1 min 37 seconds on by far the hardest course i have done.
Swim: 37:56
Bike: 3:07:48
Run: 1:48:54
Transition times were in top 5% of all finishers.

Overall i went 5:38:23
Top 20% of all finishers.

Thank you everyone for your help and support!!

ohh and it was really cool...my bike in the transition zone was like 8 feet from the Pro's bike rack. I got to see Michael Railert(ironman 70.3 champion), Eneka LLanos, Rasmus Henning, Maik Twelsiek, Linsey Corbin, and Samantha McGlone just to name a few.  A lot of big time athletes were there. Railert won and went sub 4 hours. insane! Almost beat Terenzo Bazone's course record

Wow, what a great time and experience. Your S/B/R times all look very respectable. I don't know how hard the course was but I would say that your time showed that you had put the effort and time into training and then left it all out of the course. Congratulations on the amazing time.

ohh and i have never met anyone who is a bigger fan of the office than myself (dont know whether that is sad or awesome). Every day i send my friend an office Quote of The Day..usually a quote from Dwight.

The bike had 5000+ feet of climbing and then run 2000+

Any word on what happened to chris?

I didn't hear what happened. I know some people I track from AZ didn't hit the cutoff times and were DQ'd. That is some serious climbing on the bike and run. I guess the good thing would be that you got to come down those slopes also.
