Congrats on a reat race Mary. Well done, that's a fantastic result.

My anniversary today so went out early and got in 37 mile ride, followed by a 1 mile run. Still managed to get back in time for a 7 hour drive and a BBQ dinner. Tongue out

11.5 mile run yesterday and 7 mile run tomorrow.

I clearly have to take my bike back to the store, the chain is hopping about all over the place as I ride - changing gears without me touching it, mostly seems to be on hills. Made this am's ride 'interesting'. Any suggestions ? (Scott?)

Holy. Crap.

Looked at the myofascial release with foam roller for my IT band online.  I snuck home in between morning clinic and afternoon stuff for a little foam roll therapy.

It. hurt. so. bad.  Looking forward to a second treatment tonight.

It hurts because it is tight and there are calcium buildups that need to break up.  That's the knots you feel.  Give them special attention.  Believe me, after a while, the bands will be smooth ...then you can maintain. You'll even me lifting one leg on top of the other and rolling with all the weight on them.  I promise. When that happened, I stepped to Triggerpoint Grid for more workout and then to a Rumble Roller, which is like a medieval torture device, but it so works.

Rain and cold here.  Going to Wisconsin bike course by way of real video. Ugh.  That long in the basement just sucks.

Have to get the time to put the new pedals on the TT bike too.  Hoping to race Tuesday night maybe.

Hi Team.

I hope everyone is having a great day - racing, training or relaxing, whatever you are doing.

Bad weather again here so I opted for a tread mill run and then did a nice 1000 meters in the college pool. Now I am settling in for a relaxing afternoon of watching golf - should be nice.

I do have a question for some of you veterans in here though. I was going to enter a race in July in a beautiful area of Ontario where my sister vacations for the summer - The Muskokas - about 2 hours north of Toronto - but the race I was planning on entering is sold out already Frown. I was very depressed when I got on the sight today and I am looking for some advice. I emailed the race directors asking if they have a waiting list, so I am wondering if any of you have ever experienced this before. It must be a very popular race I guess. I am hoping that they get back to me because I am guessing they will have people who drop out. The tri-a-tri at the same venue is still open but I wanted to do the sprint. What is the normal procedure for trying to get into a race that is already sold out and what do you think the odds of getting in would be?

Thanks everyone.

I finished my first triathlon!!!

Maybe I should say that I barely survived.  It was a rough start, and I never fully recovered nor really got into a groove.  The swim started OK.  I did my best to get a good start, trying to be relaxed with calculated strokes.  It went well for maybe 50 meters.  At that point, I realized that I was breathing on every stroke, head up, and I started to get tired.  In the pool, I've been stopping and resting nearly every lap, though some rests were shorter than others.  But in the open water, I couldn't.  So panic quickly set in.  I began to not be able to breath.  I quickly switched to the back stroke, but still couldn't get into a rhythm.  By this time, I was so out of breath that I look for a kayak to hold onto.  Well, the rest of the swim remained like that.  I held onto one more kayak, and two more buoys.  I remained floating on my back the rest of the way.  I swear that I thought I was going to drown at points because I was so tired.  Thank goodness for the wet suit!  It would've been that much more difficult to even float on my back without it.

I was relieved to finally touch sand when I got to shore, but was too exhausted to be happy.  In all, the 400m swim took me 19 minutes to get through.  At T1, I took my time because I was so tired.  Took a while to get the wet suit off.  Took a while to get my breathing back to a semi-normal range.

The bike was ok.  Because I was pretty spent from the swim, I just took it easy on the 12.4 mile ride.  Tried to enjoy it as much as I could.  Some of the hills sucked, but in all, this was the best leg of the race.  Took me 58 minutes to complete the course.

Finally, I expected the run to be better.  I never felt "right" after the swim, so breathing on my running was greatly affected.  I needed to walk during several parts.  Even when I did run, I got cramps - under my rib cage and quads in both legs.  This never happened during my runs and bricks.  My usual 11-minute per mile pace became 15-minute per mile.  I completed the 3.1 miles in 50 minutes.

In all, it took me 2:21 to complete my first tri.  On one hand, I'm so glad that I was able to finish.  On the other, I'm a little embarrassed, struggling to figure out what happened in the swim and how I can avoid the same thing from happening in the next one.  I'm convinced that if I can complete the swim without killing myself, I would be able to do a lot better in the bike and run.

I was last in my age group, and placed 374 of 381 overall.  Not proud (in fact, a little embarrassed) at what happened, but sure am glad I was able to finish and see my family waiting for me at the finish line.

George - awesome job and congrats on sticking with it. I hope I can do the same when I do my first one on the first weekend in June. I know you don't want to make excuses but do you think you may have had a bit more energy if you had not so courageously and unselfishly decide to allow yourself to be poked and needled last week so you could help someone else? As far as I am concerned - you WON!

Have a great week everyone.

KC

Thanks, Naked Man, Kevin.  I read your race report too.  Even though you had problems with the swim also, you still did a heck of a lot better than I did.  If you pick up any tips along the way, especially regarding swim, please share!  I can use all the help I can get.

KC, thanks for the kind words.  Actually, I think the procedure did affect my training, but I don't think it would made a big difference.  I think I'm going to sign up for another sprint in 3 weeks in Westfield MA (any of you New Englanders signing up?).  Got to swim better.  I guess there's no where to go but up.

Hey you guys who raced?  Nice job.  I don't care what your times were.  You raced.  I spent a weekend on a bike trainer int he basement and running in the rain.  So you are ahead of me.

The swim is challenging for most folks.  Most of us come to triathlon via the bike or the run.  Swimming is hard to learn in a short period of time and it is rough on the body until the form and the fitness reach a certain level.  Then it becomes quick and smooth.  It will for you too.  Hang in there.

I wanted to dothat one, but I'm working. I'm doing one the weekend before in Ludlow. My first tri also!! Very apprehensive about it. The swim is going to kill me! If your around the June 5th weekend we could do that one together.

Congrats on the All the first Tri's this weekend. So I'm officially a slacker. I haven't been back in the pool for 2week. I planned on a OWS in CA Saturday but the weather was not allowing it then it rained yesterday. It started to clear up in the afternoon but we were already heading back to Vegas. I decided to do another sprint June 21 in St George UT. I need motivation swimming lessons haven't started yet and something to keep me going. I'm already getting nervous about the Oly in October

Kevin and George - good job with first race.  I know you both wanted to be faster, but you both raced and finished pushing through tough times.  Next one you will be able to relax more and you will feel better.

I am in no way claiming to be an expert, but something dawned on me that may help out on the swim.  As I was gasping for air today during my warmup laps and drills, I thought I was going to have to stop.  Then, after a 45 second rest, my main set was great.  I was strong throughout that and the finishing drill and cool down.  So, my question to anyone that race and had a tough swim is Did you do a good warmup?  Is that something that may help you in the future?  I've felt in the past that after a bad beginning warmup I am able to stop, relax, then follow up with a better workout.

Just my $.02

I did a good warm up as i allowed my self to adjust to the water temp--it was more how the start went off and where I found myself for the start.

The start was an in water start where some where still standing closer to shore and some at the start line (wadding) ---I was in back of the start line and got mixed up with the group still standing in the water. Also there was confusion with regards to the start as it went from 1 minute to 10 seconds in about 20 seconds.

In the future I will keep an eye on this and try to position myself better. Wink

Keith, I'm actually getting into town the weekend before the Westfield tri, so I won't make it to Ludlow one.  Would've been cool to meet up.

Brian, didn't consider starting off with a warm up swim.  Sounds a bit counter-intuitive since I wanted to conserve my energy to last as long as possible.  But it's not the first time something counter-intuitive actually makes sense.  So I'll give that a try.  Most of all, I think a swim coach will really help, and just practicing swimming without stopping will help too.

Scott, thanks for the words of encouragement too!
