Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Muskrat37 - 2012-12-13 11:21 AM Not sure if I'm still allowed to update since I'm not streaking anymore. (What say you Left Brain?) Since my streak, I have been running 5-6 days per week....and yesterday I bumped my long run day up to 13.1 miles. Yes - I did the .1 at the end! I am running a 1/2 mary on 12/31. This same 1/2 kicked my a** last year (blew out my achilles - ran it in 2:04). My goal this year is sub 1:45. On my training run yesterday I decided to do a "heart rate" run. Using the heart rate monitor for races is my new thing. I kept my heart rate in the low 150's and finished my training run in 1:44 !! I wasn't even trying hard, and I still beat my goal for the 1/2 on New Years eve. I truly believe I owe it to my first 30 day streak because it taught me that if I am smart about it, I can run way more frequently than I previously thought. I can't wait for my long run next week (going to run a 1/2 again, and I'm going to bump it up to close to race pace (160-165 bpm) and see where my time ends up. I will then start my taper and plan my race around next weeks long run and recovery. I will comment on your illegal post anyway! That is astonishing! I've dropped over 40secs per km on my long runs. I think I'll be able to take another minute off. The streak has proved to me, I can run more frequently than I thought. It's also got me off the couch no excuses. And it's made me faster. All good. Please update the streakers on your actual race! |

That is great but if it was me I would dial back my pace on this upcoming 13.1 mile run. I would shoot to run it about 30 seconds pper minute slower than your goal pace and the last 5K open it up. Just my two cents and let us know how you made out in the race. Edited by navbtcret 2012-12-12 10:28 PM |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? #94....3 miles again....busy with kids. Muskrat - I consulted the original rule book and found that you can, indeed, still post on this thread....who knew? Bro....if it were me I would not do another tempo run before the race.....you're where you want to be. If I read your post right, you just did a run in under your goal, so now your going to do another and try to beat that one, and then race and try to beat them all....why? The idea of the "run every day" deal was to gain speed by frequency, and you did. In my mind, you start backing off a bit now with only two weeks to go, keeping up the frequency, and then rock it. I see a BIG win with that strategy. I don't see the big win with your plan to ramp it up even more before your race. I think you've hit it perfectly....now keep your fitness up and "rest" your legs from the last effort. I see a 1:39 for you......crazy from where you started!! Master 1890 Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? That makes 2 runners with more experience telling me to dial it back for my last long run before my taper...therefore, I shall dial it back a bit. See, I can listen. To answer your question - I wanted to push it up to 165 bpm average heart rate to see how I would react to it (at 13 miles) because that is the heart rate I kept for my 12K and it was perfect. I wanted to know (with 2 weeks to go) if I could push that heart rate for the full 13.1 miles and still be all right at the end, or if I need to keep it at the 150-155 for the race, since I now know that is a relatively easy pace / heart rate for me to keep. I was going to increase it now, then if that was good @ 160 - 165 bpm, I was going to use that as my guide on race day and try to match it. My theory is that if it's too much, I would rather find out now, and not on race day. Does that make sense? I plan on pushing it up a bit for the race, so thought I should test it now. One other factor I haven't considered is the extra push I will get from the adrenaline on race day...I also think I will naturally be faster (even at 150-155 bpm heart rate) because the course is flat, and I ran my 1:44 on rolling hills. What do you think? I was going to run it a bit harder on 12/18 - so that will give me 13 days before my race to taper (after my last long run). Do you guys still think I should run next weeks long run easier - or should I test my 160 - 165 beats per minute theory? I have started running races based on heart rate, not running pace. I am dialing in what heart rates I can keep for what distances, and I find that if my heart rate stays steady, so does my running pace. |

Sure.....but not for 13.1....go 6 at that pace after you get warmed up, and then run easy for the rest of the run. If I did that, and it went well, after the last tempo run you had.....I'd go into the race confident that I could pull it off. Again...... I bet 1:39 on race day. Phenomenal for where you came from, and easily within reach if you play it smart. |

Will let you know how race day is. I am very confident now. I've also done it by using several sets of 2 mile repeats in there at estimated race pace/effort, with a lighter mile in between. Any of these suggestions can help you out quite a bit, just don't do the entire race before the race. These training runs will help you learn what you can do and give you some confidence in your plan going in, but the race itself is where you want to find out for sure. |

Veteran 301 Smithfield, VA | Subject: RE: 30 runs in 30 days - who's with us? Today was day #20 for me. Up early for 7 miles on the treadmill. Spent most of the run trying to think of a way to cut it short and make it up later. Couldn't come up with anything and still get my target milage in for the week. But hey, they say it takes 21 days to make something a habbit, so I'm sure after tomorrow.... all my runs will be sunshine and butterflies. |

I'm doing a 5k every day for 30 days. Don't know how opening night of the Hobbit will interfere but I will still do this! Running up & down the aisles in excitement still counts. Still running day #6 for 3.1 miles. Ran faster! course it's 50 degrees outside now. Going to the Hobbit tonight at midnight (I hope I don't get excitement all over the place, they say it's a 3 hour movie! My bladder is already saying OUCH!) Tomorrow will be the test! I've got an early meeting at work (re: Christmas party) and a long day scheduled! I may run Friday night in the dark but I hope I'm not too tired. We will see! I feel like such a wuss when I see the distances thrown up here but I'm doing what I can with out injury and that is why I got into Tri's in the first place. Thanks for all the encouragement! I will get there soon!

See bolded....If you are concerned about injury, or recurring injury, then stop that. No need for it. You will get faster just by running more. That's part of the idea behind this challenge. |
