145 Jackson, Mississippi | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Well, race week is here. My first Tri is Saturday. Big race...supposed to be 400 racers there! Got a bike in today and did just under 15 miles. I finally broke 18 mph average on my ride! Been waiting on that. Setting a goal to break 1:30:00 for 1/3 mile, 17 mile bike and 5K. I feel pretty good about doing it if I don't have the cramping problems I've had doing my bricks. Also, going to have to go without my cheering section. My oldest plays softball and we've added a last minute tournament to our schedule which wasn't planned when I signed up for the race. She really wants to play this weekend so I told her and the wife to go. A buddy of mine may go with me instead. If not, I'll go solo. Got a question for the group. What's the best advice you received heading into your first Tri? I've done a lot of research along the way on such things as pre-race preparation, transitions, etc. But at this point I still feel like I'm winging it! I'm sure along the way I'll realize I was completely ignorant on something. I just hope I'm prepared enough to ease my mind as enter the water Saturday. Thanks everyone for the support and advice you've given me along the way! Your input is always valued and appreciated! Bill |

145 Jackson, Mississippi | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by Qua17 Afternoon BDASers: In a moment, I will post the Weekly Goals list - but I had to tell you a quick story about something that happened yesterday. I was smoking some beef brisket and was having a difficult time because I was using some old charcoal. So, I kept having to take some of the briquets out that weren't lighting and taking up space. So about midway through the smoke, I had to do it again and spilled some of the hot coals and thought I had put them all back into the smoker (you can see where this is going)... I stood up and stepped on a hot coal and burned myself pretty good and in the process I lost my balance. I was able to keep from falling but managed to step on another hot coal with the other foot. When I jerked back to get my foot off of the coal, I knocked over the smoker but managed to grab the top and kept the meat from falling out. It was like something out of a bad comedy sketch. Luckily, the meat was ok and all I had to do was to get some new coals going again. But I burned both feet - and my left one has a nasty blister on it in between the tip of the toe and the soul of the foot. I'm hoping to get in a ride but if I can't do it without the blister popping, I plan on doing some aqua jogging. How good was the brisket? Totally worth it! Sorry your got burned but thats pretty hilarious! Would pay money to see a vidoe of it! |

I'm training for a Half Marathon which is next month then I want to do my first tri in September but it all depends on how the swim comes along. I should be focusing on the swim and run but for some reason I find myself wanting to ride more and more. Octavio |

Bill Bill although this sounds like a much bigger race than my first tri, I would say the most important thing to remember is just have fun and take it all in! make a checklist of your gear and make sure you bring it all, but don't change too much nutrition wise or anything, a sprint shouldn't require too much nutrition planning. But again, just enjoy it! |

Bill - Listen to Justin - his advice is spot on... there are way too many variables to try to control during your first tri so once race day arrives it really does you no good to worry. Just roll with it and have fun. My advice would be to get there early and give yourself more than enough time to find the venue, set up, and check out the swim and any other parts of the course you can during your warm up. Getting there early may help you to get a better spot in transition (the end closest to exit is the prime spot but I always like to get one at the other end because there is often more space). Use the extra time to soak up the festive atmosphere and be sure to strike up conversations when you can. I've found that triathletes tend to be pretty outgoing and would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have as you head towards the start. Enjoy every moment! Remember how hard you've worked. You've earned it! |

Based upon the length of your long run - it looks like you are on track You should sign up for the tri in september before it sells out. Even if your swim isn't great - it really won't be a huge deal because swims are often the shortest parts of sprints. Signing up for the race will keep you motivated which will mean that you'll find more time to hop on the bike and enjoy yourself. Or... If you are really loving the bike - look for a bike ride in your area. A lot of time they have races in september and october that get you out and see the fall foliage. Do what you love and what makes you happy (like drinking beer). |

A couple of house keeping items: 1) Not to sound like a teacher (which I am) but only 3 of you posted your weekly goals. Be sure to post them or you'll earn a Coors Light Penalty. Seriously, posting your goals not only keeps you on track and holds you accountable but it lets us suport you along the week. 2) How is everyone doing on the weight loss challenge? I've eaten less than my limit 7 out of the 8 days this month. How are you doing. Be sure to keep us up to date. 3) A friend of Alex (way to go once again on your tri Alex) would love to join. Let's be sure to welcome him when he posts his bio later today. 4) I'm hoping to make it out for a ride later today. I need to make it happen because I cut it pretty close yesterday on my calories. I just bought a 4 pack of Founder new Wet Hopped Beer called Harvest. I will crack it later - should be pretty good! |

Veteran 706 Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Recapping last week: 13.75 hours working out, missed my MPW goal by 2, but my easy run on Friday was going south really quickly, so I bagged it. I was toeing the line of too much, so I think I made the right call. I was also at the end of a 12 day training block, and I have move around my run training plan a bit, so the total mileage for the last 7 day period from Friday was over 40 miles, even if my MPW was sitting around 25. 90 degree heat and 90% humidity probably also didn't help. Took Saturday off, since I signed up for a 10k on Sunday as a lark. Here's the race report. As a capsule summary, a great effort, and one I am entirely satisfied with - textbook negative splits, with a 0:53:57 finish time. I beat my 5k PR on the front end and the back end. Took a nice ride that afternoon, and wound up at Kenilworth Beach in Chicago's north shore, which is to say the richy-rich folks don't want riff-raff like me on their beach, and charge $15 if you want to play in the sand, so I took a picture from the free area and left. Also, the water really isn't deep enough to swim and the lifeguards there are a bit extreme about it if you try to go past the buoys. Oh, and today I am going to an open water swimming clinic being presented by the Chicago Triathlon, where I will get to play with my new wetsuit - a Blue Seventy Fusion. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Keep up the great work guys - hearing everyone train keeps me motivated. |

We got 10 inches one day! (That's 25.4 cm for Canadians.) I got no workouts in at all. I have 2 weeks till my next race on the 20th and I'm feeling fairly unprepared at the moment. I did get a run in yesterday morning and am headed to the pool after work so things are looking better. Venting helps too. |

But you should also try to work on fine tuning your pace coming off the bike so you can have enough gas in the tank for the run. X2 on all that. Getting there early lets you set up, arrange your gear, change your mind 8 or 10 times, and still be ok for the start ( a checklist does help). Socializing with fellow racers has always been enjoyable for me; you can get advice from folks who have done the course before or find camaraderie with other first-timers. Finally, it's all about the fun - why do it otherwise, right? X3 More time is always better. Will save you the stress of worrying about being rushed. As others have said you can check out transition plan your entry and exit, set things up, and relax a little before the race starts. And remember to smile! Seriously, it helps - and this stuff is supposed to be fun. |
