Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Everyone please keep your fingers crossed for Terri and me and everyone else who's living in the fire lines! We are now 2/3 through the challenge -- how is everyone doing/feeling? I have already run further/longer than I've ever run in a month -- over 60 miles of running (not including any walking, which I log separately)! I can't believe my legs haven't fallen off. |

Master 2055 Santa Clarita | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread MrsUSMC - 2007-10-21 3:33 PM Totally OT, but not all the way. I won't be running today. We are surrounded by fires so the air quality here it awful today. Please, please keep your fingers crossed that they get these under control. We're under heavy santa ana winds right now (60 miles per hour gusts) that are sort of blowing toward my house. I'm not so much worried about the fire getting to me (unless one starts on the base, which happens frequently) but more that we won't be able to breathe. Of course, I'm also worried about the people and the beautiful land that is being threatened. We've already had 1 death from it and so many people are being evacuated right now. Same problem here In santa clarita , Heavy smoke and fires not too far from my house . Strong dry winds (gusts up to 100mph) are blowing the embers and igniting all the dry brush. Not a fun end of the day . Wish us luck and safety for our brave firefighters. |

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread ALL RIGHT! I met Gail's challenge to talk to a hot guy and bring up triathlons! So I know I've mentioned "tri-hottie" (we'll call him "M" that I know from our young adult services at church who was one of the folks who did my first triathlon with me. Some weeks, I don't really get a chance to talk to him. Usually, we all go out to eat after the service, but some weeks, we have dinner at the church in our fellowship hall. Tonight was one of those nights - M got in line after I did, and so I pretended to look for a napkin and did the whole touch-his-shoulder-and-say-hi thing. So we talked for a good while; he asked me about the race I did a couple weekends ago, and how it went, and we talked about how I was training for next season and what kinds of races I wanted to do. And he said "you're going to become a triathlon fiend!". So that counts for points too!! We actually talked at length, and then he introduced me to a friend of his who was visiting and the three of us talked for awhile. YAY! One of my other guy friends invited a bunch of us over to watch a movie afterwards - M came for a little while. Not sitting on the same couch, but some witty banter was exchanged...Sigh...now I have to wait until next weekend. He's running the Marine Corps marathon, so perhaps I will have to go cheer him on
Oh, and I do have a pic of him, but I'm too tired to go resize the pic. If you want to see, I'll try to PM you with it

Yep ... he works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. But did I mention I kicked his azz in Math Club for three years? He kicked some azz himself--after a 2:43 at Long Beach Marathon last weekend, he PRed the 10K today, took 1st in his AG, and picked up some pretty nice cash for that and various other category wins. I'm bringing this guy back to Indonesia if I have to nail him inside my suitcase. Besides, his mother loves me ... (Mike.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Mike.jpg (8KB - 11 downloads) |

Expert 1112 I'm a Tennessee girl living in SoCal. | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Hey Bumpers! I'm home from my weekend venture to the north. I didn't hear any local news while I was gone, so it was very eerie seeing the fire up in Santa Clarita from the 5 as I was driving home tonight. I thought about you, Paul, hoping you guys were OK. I also thought about you as well Gail since I've seen you mention in the past about running in Angeles National Forest. We don't have any fires here in Anaheim that I've heard about, but there must be some nearby because there is a VERY heavy smell of smoke in the air. As strong as the winds are blowing, it could be the smoke from the Irvine and/or Riverside County fires. Anyway, it's good to be home and I hope everyone here in SoCal stays safe! |

I told you I would be thinking about you today and I was--both about "stupid o'clock" and then when I kept seeing that giant bunny on the course! It was the funniest thing! Like the good luck charm that you are. As I may have said in an enemy camp thread: "Hey, nerds carry a lot of weight in this part of town, cowboy." Good for you, Miss Geeky Bunny ... that makes you double da bunny bomb! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Very nicely done, antti. I know your work is crazy and even at 6 a.m. the temperatures are crazier, so super congratulations for getting your runs in and getting caught up. If you're up to 8-10K runs, a half-mary in January is very doable. Even so, it's a considerable distance, so it's important that you follow a very good plan to avoid overtraining and injury, since you've never trained/raced these distances before. A couple of recommendations: http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half_marathon.html http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/ Good luck and let us know about your plans!

Extreme Veteran 362 BAHRAIN | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread thanks dear! you never sleep? actually temps here are getting better. at five it was only 25°C and even now at ten only 31°C - now it is the best time of the year. water is still warm and temps are nice and not too humid anymore. what do you think, adding some other tri sports http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half_marathon.html on those cross training days? would be nice to swim and bike too when finally its nice to be outside... |

Hehe, yeah, I won't see him again until next Sunday, probably, assuming that 1.) I make it to watch the Marine Corps Marathon before he's done and 2.) he comes to church that night. Otherwise, the next chance will be at a mutual friend's Halloween party on the 31st...which means I have to think of a costume that's cute, but not too silly, cuz I have to look hot - but nothing trashy either... |

Antti -- If I can do it, you can, too! I am now in week 5 of a ten-week half-marathon plan. I ran my first full mile this year in mid-February (and then did all runs as R/W intervals till end of April). I ran 6 miles for the first time ever in August and thought it was soooooooo long; I figured if I could do a half mary, then the 10k at the end of an oly tri would seem easy, or at least easier. My plan was to run the first half and then run/walk or possibly just walk the second half. BUT, now I am confident I can run the whole thing! Week 5 of my plan has a 13-miler, and Week 6 has a 15-miler. I have no idea what Weeks 7-9 hold yet, but the plan says we will "turn up the heat." That sounds kind of scary, but hey, I am a RUNNER now, so I can handle it! |

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Good morning all - Just a friendly reminder that if you have not updated your logs through yesterday, to please do so this morning so that I can update the spreadsheet and send it to Cat. I'll log at your logs and if you have anything logged on Sunday, I assume that you've updated it. If there is nothing yet, I'll give you time to do so. I am still waiting on: BunnyB MrsUSMC Morgenrr Please either update your logs or let me know if your log is fine as it stands (ie, you did not run on Sunday). Thanks all - we're still doing great! Yanti is leading the way with Travis and Judi right behind - and yes, Judi, I bumped you up to 50, as you already passed your previous goal!! We still have a bit of running to do, but remember that you have until the 31st, not this coming Sunday, so that will give you an extra day or two I did almost 15 miles this past week, which is a lot for me! |

Expert 663 Williamsburg, VA | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread That's a long way Chrissy, great job. I've been a big slacker this weekend and want to apologize to everyone!!!! I have a hard time running after work. Not that work is to stressfull but being on my feet most of the day drags me down. Plus, I had some serious MOM guilt going on. Both girls had to spend the weekend alone while I was at work and just need to spend some time with them. I promise to better this week!!! Everyone have a killer running week!! |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread Mine's logged. I guess the way things are, between my injury and now the fires, there's no way I'm going to meet my 25 miles so I'm going to be writing "MUST RUN MORE" with a sharpie on my legs. But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop. I'm at work right now. It's earily dark here from the smoke in the air. The ash is so thick on the ground I left footprints all the way from the train platform to my office. Two very good friends have been evacuated from their homes and as the fires stand right now we're completely surrounded except on the west side, which is the ocean. One of them is rather close to the base, so I fully expect us to get a fire on the base some time today...it rarely fails to happen. LOL My house is safe from fire, so no worries there. |

Don't forget that you can log "waliking" as running. Take an extra spin around the block before dinner, or during lunch, etc. |
