Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Wooo Hooo Bryan..... Great race! WOW on the run...BTW that is fast....That water sounds disgusting!!!! From your description I dont think I would have been able to swim in that. There is another race report on this site and she descibes the water as being really bad as well!! I thought killer swans were bad!!! Was that a PR for you on the bike? Thats pretty fast especially with hills! CONGRATS! |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Speedboat...Mav - yes thank you for noticing....the bike avg speed was about a half mile per hour faster than my old PR. The good thing about the water is that you want to get out of it fast. It just seemed really putrid. Part of the problem is that it was very low as we have not had a ton of rain to keep the little lake full. We may get some rain this week from this new tropical storm. I was actually really pleased about the run...that is fast for me at the end of a tri. sTRIve |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bryan, great job on your race! I think that would be a pretty hard swim in that kind of water. Blech! Sounds like it was a lot of fun for you - and a solid 3 events. Way to go! I know what you mean about getting caught in a pack. Hard to break out of something like that unless you are Aquaman or Flipper. And Speedboat, good job on your mile swim. I've never swam any distance in the ocean but it would be pretty different from anything else, I think. You should feel good about that. You will do fine in your IM swim. Like I tell myself during the race - Just keep swimmin', Just keep swimmin'. That would be the Disney/Pixar version of Bryan's motto. On Saturday I did a 50-mile ride with our Boy Scout troop. They have been working on their Cycling merit badge and I went along to help. Took a while as we all stayed together to help the slower ones stay motivated. It took a lot longer that I would have liked (about 5 hours riding time), but I was amazed that they did as well as they did considering that most of them were riding pretty heavy mtn bikes. I have definitely become spoiled by my Scarlett. My own mtn bike has seen very few miles this summer, which I plan to repent of right away. I need to put together a training schedule now. I don't have any events on the calendar so its a challenge, but I do need to scale back some of the training time. Anyone know what kind of a swim/bike/run frequency I should shoot for to maintain my training base? Would a run, a couple of bike rides, and one swim per week do it? sTRIve rules! --Leston |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Ah I remember the cycling merit badge!!! My son is an Eagle Scout and I took him and 4 others on a long ride to complete that badge ( in my smoking couch potato days) One of the boys actually fell off and crashed , we were never sure what happened. He now cylces competatively. All of the boys eventually became Eagle Scouts! What great kids and memories. As far as work outs in "the off season". I try to do at least 1 hour a day. Sometimes its 30 min swim and 30 min on the treadmill. I do go to my Masters swim class 2x/week(if my work schedule permits)Damn job gets in the way. I use my bike trainer to get miles in on the bike...after Nov its too cold to ride most days. I dont follow any particular plan, just try and complete the time as not to loose hard earned fitness |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Leston - I would go for the 2-2-2 deal if you can. Something like, 2 x 1 hour long rides, a 30 min swim and a 30 min run, a 45-60 min run, and another swim of approx 1 hour. Also, two workouts of core, weights, pilates or the like in 20-30 minutes would do the trick I would say. You could probably do most of this in 4 days/week without too much trouble if necessary but I would try to hit 2-2-2....I would sacrifice the short run for a weight or core workout if necessary. You are going to keep a lot of cardio fitness from the swim and bike....ramping up the running miles when necessary is actually pretty easy. DON'T STOP SWIMMING!!! sTRIve |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bry, that's basically what I have been doing up until now. 2 bike, 2 swim, 2 run, 2 weight training each week. One long, one short workout for each. I just can't continue to put in that much training time for a while. Lots of things that I have been putting off that I need to get back to. I guess that I will just have to get what training in that I can to keep it going. And I'm not going to quit swimming. I enjoy it enough to swim in the pool once or twice a week. Like mav, the OWS are much more fun, but harder to come by. What's everyone up to anyway? Upcoming events? sTRIve! |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Glad to hear youu are keeping your fins Leston!!!!! I hear you on letting things go! My gardens look like weeds, the house needs painting and my car is screaming for a bath!!!!! I had my longest swim ever......2 hours non stop in a lake. I made no friends with the park rangers that day... but thats another story!!!! I actually felt pretty good afterward. I figure I swam 3 miles. It is only 2.4 for the ironman so I figure even if there is chop and some current I can make it. Yesterday I went and checked out the race course in Plymouth MA (Where the Pilgrims first landed). We actually enter the water right next to the Mayflower and exit the water next to Plymouth rock. The course goes along and back against a rock jetty. You go down and back 3 times then you have to swim through a marina like area to Plymouth Rock. I asked the Harbormaster if I could legally swim it and he looked at me like I was crazy. He said it would be OK. I just dont want to get in trouble with park authorities anymore!!! I am planning on checking the tides and heading down next week for a swim...I let you know about any sea creatures!!!!! I have an olympic distance race the weekend before the swim and a sprint (all women) the weekend after the swim. Then I think I'm done for the season. I plan on doing a 1/2 mary in the fall. I am interviewing for a teaching position next week in Boston. Only part time. Ideally my husband and I would like to retire and both teach part time on the college level. A dream that is pretty far in the future at this point! Juanita and Dan...NO MORE LURKING!!!!!!!!! |

What I wrote was ideal. You can adjust off that. Maybe every third week you could hit them all or one day do short bricks. Good job to keep swimming, you don't want to lose what you have. Mav - did you go outside the buoys again? Were you arrested? If not, all is well and the Park Rangers will get over it. Good luck with the interview!!!! Go big or go home. I can't believe we are already talking about the end of the season. sTRIve

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey Turtles! I am still alive Sorry, I went out-of-town for 5 days and then haven't posted since I returned. Mav, thanks for the inspire on my log! I love it that you take your time to check up Bryan, GREAT race! I am truly impressed. My goal is to be like you when I get your age (truth is I wish I could race like you right now!). Now I know why you are our leader. My training has been a bit behind, but I am not back into the swing. We did the Lansing Legislator Tri this morning as a relay - OLY distance. We won the race, but that isn't saying much since we were the only relay doing the OLY distance Quick race report: Weather was cold 52 degrees when we got there at 6:30ish. I am really glad I didn't have to swim (although the water temp was 76!). My college room mate's 16 year old son backed out a couple of days ago, but his 19 year old brother stepped up and did the 1500m in 26 min (since my last swim I did 800m in 25 min, I was duly impressed!). I we exchanged the chip in transition area and I was out on the bike. Course was rolling hills with a couple of "good sized ones" (I had to get into small sprocket 2 times!), but not too bad. Fairly windy. My goal was 40m in 1:15 (20mph). I was close, but no cookie - 1:18:30. Overall not too disappoined, but wanted to hit my goal. I have become truly impressed with the people who can generate soooo much speed over long distance on bikes (Bryan & Leston). I am working on it, but certainly need more work! When I was getting off the bike, I slowed down considerably, unclipped my shoes and tried to get off with a little (and I do mean little) speed, but being on cement as soon as I stepped off, my feet slipped and I fell on top my bike! The crowd gasped, I got up with a cut on my right thigh, bruised ego, but overall ok. Got into transition, racked my bike, passed chip to my daughter (which was very, very cool!). She finished the 10k in 56:20. They haven't posted the results yet. I will let you know when they do. I have my mid-week tri this Wednesday at 6:30 pm. I will keep you all posted. Chicago is August 24th! I am getting excited Dan |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Dan - great race report...I added the finish line to the total. Wow, mid-week tri this week...we will need a race report. Thanks for the nice comments but you all are easy...you are trained and you are all doing GREAT. You really don't need me anymore but I can't wait to read about all you are doing. By the way, It takes about three years to build bike fitness. For any of you in your first year on the road, just keep up the work. You will get faster every few rides. I have guys telling me the same thing. Patience, my friend, it takes time. You did make me ROFLMAO with the "the crowd gasped", oh my gosh, they "gasped"....I love that!!!! It must have been a SPECTACULAR dismount......YouTube???? We could only dream... Maybe Spielberg/Sticka/FBP will re-create the "gasp" near tragedy for our viewing pleasure. Most importantly, is the bike okay? sTRIve |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Congrats Dan!!!! Hardware is hardware...1rst place is great no matter what. Hope you have recovered from your fall! I fear the fall from the clipless pedals...so far so good! Good luck on your mid week race this week! I love to read your race reports!!! I will try to continue to check up on you and your logs LOL I have been really falling behind in my biking. It has been raining nearly everyday. I could actually bike in the rain but I'm just being wimpy. I'm swimming evryother day, long distances 1-5K. It is so great to be able to do these distances and not feel totally spent. Yesterday I ran (slowly) 8 miles. It was the first time I ever used a hydration belt. I will NEVER run over 5 K without it! It was wonderful and I felt SOOOO much better that I typically do on long runs. When I wasn't drinking the water I was pouring it on my head. I had 1 hammer gel, and I wished I had another one. It just made such a differenceto be hydrated through the run. RULE #1... never deprive yourself!!!! Did anyone see last nites mens team in the 400 relay? I was screaming so hard that I was hoarse today. What a GREAT race. Cant wait to see Dara Torres... she is my idol. Bryan...hows the training???? Not long before the 1/2... NO DOUBT you will be ready!!! sTRIve on fellow turtles!!!!!! |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Wow! Really quiet around here these days (me included). Did a century ride yesterday with a couple of friends. 100 miles is loooong way! Pretty hot by the time we finished. Anyway, it was good, but nice to have it over. My IT Band is really giving me problems though. Started about 20 miles in, and of course just got worse. I've not really had problems with it on the bike until now, though. From what little I've found I may need to get some pedals with more float in them. Kind of discouraged right now. I couldn't really even walk this morning when I woke up. Dan, good luck in your race! Looking forward to hearing how you did. --Leston |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Leston - check out some of the triathlon forums like TriTalk or TriScoop - there are many IT band discussions out there and I am sure there is some information that could be helpful. Mav - training is going good...getting pretty big volumes now....Last Saturday was a 40 mile bike and 2 mile run. This weekend the brick is swim 30 mins, bike 2 hours, run 30 min. Today's workout was a swim workout totalling 3000 meters and then also a 45 minute bike today but not done as a brick. I also have a 90 minute run this weekend and another swim. This has been a pretty big week. I think next week is recovery. I am also checking my resting heart rate pretty much each morning, for those who don't know, a 10-15% increase in your base resting heartrate is a great indication of overtraining. You take your heartrate before you even get out of bed. Open your eyes, take your heartrate, get your a&& out of bed and go train.... Longhorn 70.3 in 52 days 10 hours and about 40 minutes..... I woke up in Dallas yesterday morning and it was hot, I woke up in Chicago this morning in the 60s....I really wanted to run but had one too many swallows of a martini last night and had to get to the airport so I punished myself after my long swim by riding outside...it was 95 today here. sTRIve |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Ladies and Gentlemen, I AM A TRIATHLETE!!!!! I can't explain how excited I am right now. I just broke my PR by 10 minutes! Finishing in 1:24:50. My best time in this same distance was 1:34 something and my first one with a 300m shorter swim was 1:36 something. My first two triathlons I felt that I survived, but really did not feel good about either of them. I finally really feel good and like I am accomplishing something and moving in the right direction. All the work and listening to my fellow Turtles has paid dividends. Thank you! This was the first weeknight Tri that anyone around here has ever heard of! They sold out all 400 spots. I loved not having to get up early to get this done (I am not much of a morning person!). It was overcast with scattered showers all day. Temps were in the low 70's, but no real sun all day! By the time we got to the park, it was clearing, but still pretty cool - great weather for a TRI! Swim: 800m OWS. In water start. 3 waves with about 135 per wave. Started 5 minutes apart and I was in the 3rd wave. Water was a bit murkey, but fairly calm. No weeds (yeah!). Water was 76 degrees but wet suit legal (I thought USAT rules was 74 degrees, but if they are going to let me use my crutch, I am going to take it! I am still not comfortable without the wet suit in an OWS). In water start triangle configuration on the course. This was still a lot of people in 1 wave. Very crouded and I ran into other swimmers constantly, sometimes catching them and sometimes being caught! When we went to the first bouy turn, there were about 5 or 6 swimmers breast stroking side by side (I don't think this was intentional, but just happened that way!), it really slowed things down and I got caught behind them. Overall, I swam well for me! I only had to breast stroke for a little bit and didn't have to float at all! My direction still needs some work as I have a tendancy to drift to the right, but I never got off the course too bad this time! They did not post the split times, but my wife had me timed just over 17 minutes!!!! My goal was 20 so I am elated. My best swim ever T!: Pretty good, I was not exhausted from the swim, so things went pretty smooth. The transition area was close to the beach. I pulled off my wet suit with ease, sat down to put on socks and bike shoes, put on glasses and helmet and on my way. They had specific spots for each participant with your number and name exactly on your transition spot. This was a very nice touch that I haven't seen before! I wish they gave you a little more room, but still a nice touch! Bike: I still need to work on mounting!!! I am having some issues getting clipped in and it cost me 15 - 25 seconds. My left calf was cramping coming out of the water and was very sore when I started the bike, but it loosened up and didn't bother me after I got going! The bike course was very hilly, but I have ridden this course 4 times so I knew what to expect. I think familiarity with a course is a HUGE advantage. I was passed by 4 people on the bike, but I caught and passed 3 of them before the end! Biking is by far my favorite part of Tri's and I will be very interested to see my time. I know I still have lots of room for improvement, but I am very comfortable right now. Dismount was on a grassy area and after my fall on cement on Sunday, I was very glad about this! T2: Smooth and uneventful. Felt good. I love the Yankz that Bryan suggest and my daughter commented on how much time it takes others to tie their shoes! Thanks Bry! Run: Just like the bike, not a flat spot on the course! I set my goal as "NO WALKING!" I didn't care if I jogged slowly, but in both my other tri's I had to walk. Goal accomplished! I made the entire course without walking. I was passed by quite a few people and I passed quite a few. I tried to keep a decent pace and was happy. I certainly won't break any speed records, but I had a comfortable pace the entire time. Then right around the 2 mile mark, something clicked in. It is hard to explain. My body loosened up, I felt very relaxed, my pace increased, my clenched fists opened, I was very tired, but had this elation feeling coming over me. I was at peace and really feeling good. As I was nearing the end there was a row of trees so you couldn't see the finish line until the last 200m. I could hear the croud cheering for those who were finishing and my juices started flowing. I started running about the last 1/3 mile and passed 4 or 5 people who passed me earlier. I felt strong and good. As I crossed the finish line Left, Right, Repeat was going through my mind! My wife and daughter were cheering, the croud was loud and I truly felt like a triathlet for the first time!!! Them my daughter showed me the video of the finish and we saw the clock showing 1:34:50 and I was disappointed. I couldn't believe I didn't beat the 1:30 mark then some told me that was for the first wave and I started 10 minutes after!!!!!! Then I was feeling GREAT again .. OK, time for bed now. Dreaming of Chicago in 11 days (Bryan did you check out the course for me when you were there???). More later, thanks again. Dan |

BTW...You were a triathlete before you started...your just WAY faster now!!!! Quite an accomplishment! Bryan, the volume of training you are doing is admirable!!!!It seems as is if the training is actually the hard part...the race is the fruit of all your labor. Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Finish Line updated. Who will get us to number 40? Dan - great race. You are feeling the peak performance. I love that "OMG I have done all this and still feel pretty good" feeling. It is really amazing that the feeling is hard to understand....I usually get chills at some point in a race about just the accomplishment....it seems to me to be one of those things best described as, if you have done it, you can't explain it and if you haven't done it, you couldn't understand anyway. I did a one hour ride and a 30 minute run today....all inside. It was just too hot. On the long swim yesterday, I actually sunburned my back a little. That was a surprise. I view the training as an escape from work....so I look forward to it. The volume has really picked up in the last two weeks, prior to that it wasn't all that big during the week. By the way, there is a century ride in North Texas called the Hotter 'n Hell....it is next weekend. I have a few friends that are going to do it. It can really be brutal. Check out the website -- it is a HUGE ride. I can't believe it is August and we are looking at the end of the season. I still have 3-4 more races this season...Not winter here yet, just raining all the time. I havent been biking as much as I should do in prep for this oly. I'm sure I'll complete but NO records will be broken!!! Got the job today...its a teaching position...very part time, 1 day / week as a clinical instructor. So needless to say I wont be leaving my other job. It should be fun and it is very short term( only fall semester) but if I like it I will continue to teach in other semesters. Bryan, I certainly hope you are right about biking. I did improve this year, but not as much as I had hoped. I will ride alot this fall in hopes of continuing to improve. I wish I could commute to work..but they frown upon smelly nurses!!! I also would not want to be riding home in the dark. Gotta go watch Michael Phelps win another gold!!! |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Mav - I am right aobut the bike. Just trust me and keep riding. If you doubt me, go ride a ride that you did last year and tell me if you don't hammer it compared to how you rode it last year. My Oly is Sept 1 so you guys go before me. Please indulge me and let me share this story with you... Due to the Olympics, I have been sacrificing a little sleep to be a good American however I rolled out at 5:30 this morning to do it my workout before it got too hot. I had a great workout. One mile OWS, 1:50 minutes on the bike - about 30 miles with a LOT of hills and then a 20 minute trail run. The legs got to feel good after about 5 minutes and I felt very good after the run. I had a recovery drink and then ate a sandwich on the way home. I was able to do this with a tri shop here who has just started doing these Sat trainings at a local lake. So I have a chance every Sat to OW swim, bike, run or any combination thereof and any distance. They usually do an hour/an hour/and an hour but they are adjustable and met my schedule today without any problems. So here's the reason I share this with you, Debbie (Mrs. L.R.R) has been swimming since May (which incidentally is the first time she put her face in the water) and last night swam 1400 yards in a 200, a bunch of 100s and a few 50s. She went out with me this morning to try an OWS and follow with a short bike around the park and to run with me. The lake is 1/2 mile across - she swam ALL THE WAY across AND back. Her first OWS ever was 1 mile. I am so proud of her that I had to share that with you all. Now here's a funny, there was a lady at the lake promoting Gatormania - an OW race next weekend at the same lake. Debbie was like - I might want to do that. So who knows what we have created here. Thanks for listening and I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the weekend. sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey everyone .... I'm baaaaack !! Got home from the cottage late last night - good thing Mrs FBP didn't have her boyfriend over ( ) 'cause I surprised her by being 12 hours earlier than planned. Decided not to stay when they had to postpone the big horse race that I had wanted to see due to a violent rain storm that made the track unsafe. Can't say that this was one of the better holidays that I ever had - the weather was the worst I can ever recall. It rained almost every day (I think that there were only 2 dry days in 14) I mentioned before I left that I had decided not to do the Triathlon that was scheduled for the first weekend I was there. Turned out to be a VERY good decision. The weather was monsoon-like that day which alone was enough to freak me out but to add to that my car had problems the day after I arrived and needed to go into the shop so I wouldn't have had transportation to drive the 70km from my cottage to the race site. Enough about the negatives ... I did manage to get a reasonable number of bikes/runs in. I did 5 or 6 rides ranging in distance from 25 to 40 km and what a difference now that my bike has been properly fitted !!! I also did a half dozen runs including two 10k distances. The only thing I didn't manage to do was get in any swims but I'll be back to the university pool this week for sure. Congratulations to all of you who have been racing over the past two weeks - I scrolled back through all the great posts to read about them. Edited by FreddyBeachPete 2008-08-17 7:35 AM |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! WTG Debbie...that is some very impressive swimming.I know of very few people who could complete a mile that early into training! FBP... sorry to hear about the weather! Its never fun when your vacation has lousy weather. We missed you! Had a near death experience on my bike this week. I was following traffic in a rather busy intersection, probably traveling 12-14 mph, I was legally following traffic. This women at a stop sign in a perpendicular intesection starts pulling out as if I was not present. She is heading right at me...I start screaming HEY at the top of my lungs and she continues, I speed up and she misses me by a hair, it was like she never even saw me, I was shook!!!!! I was shaking and just wanted to stop. I still had 15 miles to go in my ride...so I continue and this guy pulls up next to me and rolls down his window and starts yelling at me he says " keep riding like that she almost killed you". I didn't know what to do...so I just kept riding. I'm glad I did, as I think if I had stopped I would never have gotten back on my bike. Why is it that some people think bike riders still belong on sidewalks????? I rode yesterday with a group and I was fine. A little jittery at first but OK. This is an easy week for me with one long swim. I have an oly on Sun and ironman swim in 2 weeks. I hope this hurricaine in FLA passes and leaves the ocean a little calmer. I am very lucky that drivers here tend to be very accomodating but I have had moments, especially as a cycle commuter, of panic too. Usually a driver who is just not aware of surroundings. In respect of your near-death experience I won't comment on recent Blue Jays-Sox issues ... |

What an accomplishment. That would be great if TRIs become a LRR family affair! I've been lazy, I'll admit it. As far as the training goes, I'm not doing too well. I need to get to the pool b/c my IT Band still hurts when I ride or run. I read some advice to use a foam roller on the band for 5 or 10 minutes each day. Anyone used a foam roller before? Something different to try anyway, and I hope that it works. I am getting some work done on our little remodel job on the home - tearing down some walls to make a larger room. That's a good thing. One anecdote to impress upon your minds The Rule. My brother's friend did the Spudman also. He was in the 2nd wave. I was in wave 4 and passed him while he walked about 1 mile from the finish line. He had put a pair of aerobars on his bike a week earlier and had not got used to the lower position. Hammered his hammys. He was pretty bummed out about it. But he broke The Rule, and The Rule broke him! Mav, FBP, Dan, Bryan - I wish I had another race to do like you all. Maybe I'll have to make one up for myself. sTRIve! Leston |
