Food wise - Planning ahead is key for me.....i'll be trying to 'recover' in the car driving somewhere - 'oh here's a mini-snickers bar.' i drink too much coffee - but am proud to be 'off' soda for life. The whole bone-health thing scared me into that. do you have actual food recomendations? i love the lists...snacks? any secret favorite- healthy foods? i'm reading the Chris Carmichael tri-nutrition book - if i didn't have kids i would be obsessed with whole-slow food. Going to run outside today - it's going to be 40 degrees - yipee!! Happy hump day all!

lara13 - 2009-03-03 4:04 PM Hey everyone - Tammy about heart rate training....should i being doing it? Terri said you figured her zones out with 5k time? i tried to test it - max was 177.....5k time is 24.19. i'm trying to figure out watts too - joe wants me to test that out. Terri i don't think you'll lose anything taking running time off after the mary. stretch, baby yourself..... so are we doing some group rides this spring everyone? anyone?

Me thinks HR training works, especially after I saw my results from last Saturday's run.  Albeit it was an oval run.  Still, I think it is working cuz I don't feel so out of breath on those long slow runs anymore.

Buddaha1964 - 2009-03-04 6:05 AM By the way, small amount of whining here, how on earth do you guys find the enregy to keep up your schedules?

A couple ideas: by keeping my favorite music on the iPod, and only letting myself listen to it when running, for example, I get motivated because I want to hear it. Or, arrange to meet someone, say at the pool, to swim together, I need to show up and we feed each others energy that way.

Keeping the motivation going keeps the energy going, I find. Got a running partner? Can you find one or find a program to work out with other people?

And keep this image in mind: a healthier, more slender Buddaha streaking past the roaring crowds at triathlon races this summer. :-)

Uh, you won't like my answer on the gelatin.

LOL I was in a plant in northern Illinois a few years back when I found out that one. I spent the next six months looking for it in different packages before I gave it up. By the way, small amount of whining here, how on earth do you guys find the enregy to keep up your schedules?

It's a sickness I am happy to have.

Also: exercise first thing in the morning before I've had enough time to think of other things I really should do, and after downing an energy/protein drink and LOTS of caffeine

Question...if you run a half marathon do you have to take off a day for each mile. I don't want to screw up my training plan by running a half in May. I am up to 6 miles right now. I figure if I keep increasing I should be to 10 in no time.

For what it is worth I DO NOT plan on doing a half iron. I am just on a good running streak right now.

Just a few healthy snack ideas:

  • Cottage cheese and fresh fruit (blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, mandarin oranges)
  • Low fat string cheese and a piece of fruit or some fresh vegetables
  • Celery/green pepper/red pepper and hummus
  • Apple and cheddar cheese slices
  • Yogurt and whole grain crackers
  • Raw almonds/walnuts and dried fruit (blueberries, cranberries, cherries)
  • Natural peanut butter/almond butter on whole grain crackers or celery
  • Berry parfait-layer frozen strawberries or raspberries with vanilla yogurt and top with low fat granola or chopped walnuts
  • Protein shake (no artificial sweetners and less is better on the list of ingredients)
  • Protein bars (luna, clif, etc.)-look for low sugar content and a short list of ingredients
  • Yogurt with fruit and walnuts
  • Blue corn tortilla chips with fresh salsa
  • Milk and a good oatmeal raisin cookie (read labels, less sugar is better)
  • A good piece of dark chocolate (yes, just one piece)
  • Baby carrots and cottage cheese
  • Banana and peanut butter on one piece of whole grain bread

I could go on and on so I will stop here.  Mindless snacking is my downfall and I have been eating a lot of bad things.  My choices will be limited to the list above this month.

no..take off a couple days depending on how hard you run it.  13 miles isnt quite as hard on the body as 26.  Start swimming and biking first then add some easy runs

Tis all in the ingredients.

Natural PB-peanuts, salt

Regular and Low Fat-more ingredients and a little more sugar, some chemicals

Skip the low fat, fat is replaced with "other" things.

I'd like to know facebook names too

First (well second, but first since I've been home) run with my garmin today, now I just have to figure out the computer part

I was so excited to get out and run outside today. It was a whole 32 degress wahoo!!!

I also just found out about a monday night mini tri series that runs from june-august every week in lake placid. I think that will be perfect for my first tri experience, small, low key sprint distance and weekly so it will be easy to fit one in to my schedule. Things are starting to look up here in the frozen north.

OK, I had trouble finding someone by their name. How about email address with a space in between the @ that we have to remove so some crawler doesn't get it
