- Sleep well on Thursday night because you might not be sleeping too well on Friday night before you race.

- Go out there and have fun. Some things can happen that are out of your control but that's ok.  Like you said, just get this one under your belt

- Smile. Thank the volunteers.  Support others as you bike/run past them.

- No one laughs at manatees.  No matter how crazy you think you look in your wetsuit or trisuit...there will be someone wearing a questionable outfit.  Everyone will be so concentrated on their own races I wouldn't worry about it.  Nor should you...I am sure you will look great in all that tri gear! And I would imagine that red hair goes really well with a black wetsuit right?

- Lay out your transition on Thurs or Friday night and pack.  Therefore you still have some time to ponder if you forget anything. And that way you can just get up and go on Sat morning without additional stress.

You've gotten great advice from fellow Manatees Kerry. If you have a few moments, or make a few moments, just sit and breath, in and out. Let the thoughts come and go--- ommmmm....Normal worries, natural anxiety, you are perfectly normal. Try and use your mental energy to visualize your race, from going to be early the night before to what you'll eat for breakfast, to all your transitions and each sport and finally visualize yourself crossing that finish line with a huge smile on your face! We'll all be with you in manatee spirit. High five flipper!

Kerry!  You read my race report, so you know I am a basket case before races!  It is normal and right to be keyed up...try and focus your energy on getting yourself ready for your race.  Whatever your focus exercise may be, go ahead and allow yourself to wallow in it for a while.  For instance, I am a list maker, when I feel overwhelmed, it is soothing and helpful to make lists of things I need, or I need to do, or remember, etc.  Lynn visualizes, this is useful too.  See if you can visualize all the way through your race.  Not every stroke, pedal, and step, but the major portions.  Setup, start, transition, nutrition, hydration, gear, etc.  Ryan always gives practical and sensible advice as well, everything he said to do is something I strive for in every race.

I am very excited for you, can't wait to hear how it goes.  And don't worry making mistakes or how you look...everyone else is too busy obsessing over the same crap themselves...believe that!!!

Here's the link for my RR. It's long and I don't blame you if you skim or don't read it fully. It was cathartic for me to write though, so I indulged myself. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=220506

Nice race for you Quincy. I'd like some of your speed. You could probably sub some of your mid week runs with a bike and/or swim if you want a break from so many miles. It's really not absolutely necessary to run that many miles, IMHO. But you're a studdette, so your legs/hips/knees may not be protesting too much. Just sayin...

LOL. Not long. You've seen my RRs, right?

Beautiful, beautiful work. Also I teared up at the sign from your DH ...

gadgetlaw - 2010-08-04 3:40 AM Hi everyone!

I am back from the most amazing vacation ever!  France was fabulous.  Not only did we get to see the Tour, but there was a triathlon in Paris the first weekend we were there.  Yep, I made my husband get up early to go watch it.  The entire trip was fantastic and fun!  I will post some pictures when I can.  I have been trying to catch up with life since we got home last Thursday.  I volunteered at the Oly that I did last last year.  I didn't think that I would be up to doing it after just getting home from vacation.  I have never volunteered at a race before and it was so much fun.  I did a lot of different things, but I think that I had the most fun spending about 4 hours body marking.  Some triathletes have yummy bodies that I got to touch all day!!!!  I still haven't got back in to training, and I really miss it!  As soon as I catch my breath, I will post the pictures and some more details about the trip.

Oh, and I did not even notice about the mentor program being over.  I hope everyone wants to keep going, because I sure do!

Have a great evening!  And happy training!

Karen

You are a SCREAM. Welcome back!!! Please do post pics. You got to live the dream there!

And thanks for volunteering ... it's such great fun, isn't it?

We have a future triathlete/baby manatee (calf) on the way!
He/she is due on 3/5/2010 (so we're about 9 weeks into the pregnancy).

Next

A Baby Manatee! HOW EXCITING!!!!! I don't know anything about your wife except that she has fantastic taste, and from knowing you if this kid is anything like you two, it will be one Super Manatee

KERRY! We are so excited for you, too. Let US have your nerves, you just go in there and HAVE FUN!!!

No, you're not getting sick. You're just crazy. That's fixable.

Breathe deeply and easily before the swim--and continue to do so into the swim.

Don't worry about transitions. Don't worry about how you look. Nobody else cares. You shouldn't either. Besides, redheads are hot no matter what. Even with their hair in a swimcap.

If you walk on the run, that's just more time to ENJOY THE SHOW.

kerryd - 2010-08-04 9:39 AM Okay, talk to me manatees.

T-minus 2 days and 22 hours before my first official sprint tri.  I am nervous.  Not by anything specifically, just in general.

Will I have GI issues?
What if my transitions are sucky?
Are people going to point and laugh at this manatee wrapped in sausage casing?

Physically, I think I am ready.  My fingers are still numb (I pinched my ulnar nerve doing AIDS rides 10 years ago and I have aggravated that) but I can ride like that, no problem.  My run still sucks, but I can walk.  I don't know why I am so nervous?!  I am eating like a horse due to nerves.

So... talk to me.  I know I need to get this first one under my belt and make mistakes to learn from them, blah blah blah.  Just give me your best '2 days 22 hours out advice.'

Thank you

You can do it Kerry.  Trust in your training.  Focus on fun.  Get good sleep Thursday night, as others have said.  Did I mention, just have fun?  I am excited for you.

And Ryan, I am VERY excited for you and the little Manatee to be!  That's awesome news.  Congrats.

Still off the training wagon, still trying to get on, still having issues with getting enough sleep and thus missing work outs.  I need to break this cycle, I know.  Last night, I had no excuse, and was still up until 1 am.  I don't get it.  I need REST.  And exercise.  And the lack of each is playing off of the other.  Le sigh.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and contragulations.  We both really appreciate it!  I let Laura know how supportive all of the manatees have been and how this season of triathlons has been so much better now that I have "met" all of you!
I'll post a picture of the ultrasound if we get a good one in 2 weeks...especially if it looks like a manatee.  Don't laugh because one of our friends is pregnant (due almost at the same time) and her baby looks like a turtle in the last ultrasound

Ryan, one of my kids' first pictures looks like a shrimp.

Kerry, I'll ditto everything everyone else said and add one more thing.  This is advice someone gave me before my first race and I thought it was awesome so I'll pass it along.  At some point during your race stop focusing on pushing yourself and just look around you.  Watch all the other amazing people doing these amazing things and stretching themselves past their breaking points just like you're doing.  As cool as some of them look and as dorky as you may feel it won't matter because when you get there and you're racing you're just like them.  You're a triathlete.  Soak that in because it's an amazing feeling.

Lynn, running off to guitar lesson but I'll catch up on your RR when I get back.

This is exactly what I'm struggling with.

Here's a few things I'm trying to remember that might help:

- it's better to do something than nothing. If you can't get your workout in, can you walk in place for 10 minutes? Do some yoga?
- if you haven't gotten enough sleep, it's actually beneficial (rather than draining) to do LIGHT INTENSITY exercise. Again, a brisk walk or spin around the block on the bike will actually give you a bit of a boost. Skip WORKING OUT in favor of a quick, rejuvenating activity.

Hey guys, I am accepting a job offer today...small sports apparel company in Chicago.  I'll be inside sales, which I've never done before.  I am excited to be getting into the fitness industry!  Start MondaySurprised
Wish me luck.  It is a big deal for me--something I've been wanting to take a crack at for a long time (career change, going back to work).

That's awesome Q...how exciting!  A change of career is always both an exciting and anxious time. Enjoy your weekend and good luck at the new job on Monday. Oh and congratulations!  You don't need luck...this new small company is lucky to have you on board.

And I thought you and Allison (being Chicagoans) would appreciate this.  I had a good 5 mile run last night along the lakefront listening to Lollapalooza warmups.  But I actually ran past one of the 4-seat tourist "bikes." I saw them about .25 miles ahead of me and I set a goal of passing them on my way back home! Yes, I know they were just tourists and probably were not moving too quickly but it made me feel super fast to pass them

You don't need "luck" tomorrow Kerry so have a big manatee flipper high-five instead!
Have fun tomorrow and kill it out there
We look forward to reading your race report.  Don't be too nervous about tomorrow. I think you're well prepared.  Training is the hard part and racing is the fun part...just remember that.  Sleep well!

Congrats Quincy! Let us know how it goes. Are there discounts for manatees? JK

Kerry, one more piece of advice -- hope you're not adviced-out! Get in the water before your swim and get used to it. Do some quick swimming to burn off any nervous energy. It really has helped me in the past, but most of all, like everyone has said -----

H A V E  F U N!!

Enjoy your weekend, everyone -- and Dineen -- no beating yourself up--okay?

That's it, you've got me.  I am HOOKED.

So much freaking fun.  I may be spoiled now for future events, but right now... I am elated!

Here is my Race Report  (helps if I make it public, huh?)

Thank you ALL for your words of encouragement.  Your wisdom and your humor.  You all really made me stick to it and I had a blast.  I love you, man!  (can you tell I am still on a race high??)

Yanti, you have to tell me how you did your race report with pics in it.  I tried and completely messed up the page.

Hey Manatees, stop whatcher doing and go read Kerry's RR if you haven't already.  Hilarious, and fun.  Oh and Kerry, I forgot to mention that I absolutely cannot eat ShotBloks.  I get nauseous just thinking about eating them.  Uck.  If that was your first time eating them, try them one more time to see how they treat you.  It might not be hydration, it might just be that they don't agree with you.

I agree with Q.  Try some different products and flavors during your training days.  Maybe a different brand, or different product (gel, shotblock, etc), or different flavor will work best for you.  For instance, I don't mind drinking G2 before or after a workout but when I am biking and it's hot out then it's way too sweet for me.

Hey all!

re: shot blocks, I usually love them. I tried a lot of products whilst training, and like the blocks the most.  I just think that I over ate and didn't hydrate enough.  Lesson learned!  As much as I don't like it, I may just stick with Gu cuz it's safe.

Q - congrats on the new job!

I have the Pink Power sprint tri in 2 weeks.  This one is in the heart of VA and it will be HOT and Hilly.  The honeymoon of perfectly flat routes and 70 degree weather is over, LOL!
