Thanks. I ended up using TriBike Transport. Based out of SF and the drop off is right down the street. Only issue is you have to drop it off the Saturday before so maybe try to wake up really early and get long ride in that Saturday. I waited too long and started training a month ago. Sprained my MCL running in the headlands and have been out the last three weeks. Been easing back on the stationary bike and have yet to swim or bike on the road. Hoping I can ramp up and don't waste a bunch of money and peoples (family flying in to watch) time by not being able to complete. Did a 30 minute run and felt good.

Hi Fellow IMCDAers,

I am trying to find out more information about the climbs on the bike course for 2012. I am wondering what we are dealing with there? Have any of you been on US 95 going south of town? Does anyone have video of the course? I see on the profile 6 key climbs. Also, how is the wind on this part of the route?

Profiles of bike courses can be deceiving at times.

Thanks,

Boski - 2012-05-28 11:06 AM

So I was on what would have been my 2nd 100 plus ride on saturday when at mile 80 I ran over some glass and lost my back tube.  Problem was I was on my Zipps 404 FC that I was planning to use for IMCDA.  Guess what carbon fiber does when its hit asphalt. So not only did I miss my second 100 mile ride, I lost an expensive race wheel in the process.

I hit the ground somewhere in the 22 to 25 mph range and slowed down very quickly once on the ground (lol!)  the road rash wasnt as bad as it could have been and the damge to the bike was repairable-except the wheel of course.

The only reason I am posting this was to share the amazing thought that went through my mind as I was walking back to a place I could get picked up:  So I lost a nice rear wheel that I wont be able to replace anytime soon (even with the crash replacement policy that Zipp has) and I lost a key workout day.  So what if I cross the finish line 10 minutes later than I could have with the Zipps.  So what if I might get to race day a little undertrained.  I am going to make it to the start line on a race that I have been dreaming of running for the last five years.

We are all this close to putting a fitting end to all the long hours and long miles.  We are all this close to doing something amazing.  Whats that quote-The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.

Thats where we are so let me just say train hard and be safe and I will see you on the start line!!!!

Hey thanks for pick me up. I have been stressing about the race. You know have I trained enough, what about those days I was just to tired to train or to finish the training. I have no doubt  that I will start the race. I am very confident that I will finish. I may or may not hit my set time, but I might bet it! I really just appreciate the comment thanks for posting it.

I am super stoked for this race. Like all a bit nervous especially since my last few weeks have been extremely challenging in finding training time Cry. Unfortunately this is my high travel season but after this week it ends. Regardless I am taking a bike with me to San Fran to ride this week in between work so thats a plus.

I wish I was better prepared but at the same time know I have done just about everything I could with the allowable time which is fine as i am out to complete more than compete.

Question for you all shipping bikes. Anyone ever do the Fed-Ex/UPS thing? That is my plan to ship a week out and send to friends house. Never tried it but since I have another bike to ride at home I dont mind losing the race bike for a few days

I shipped my bike Fedex for St George a couple year ago. It arrivedexactly when expected and in the shape I had left it. If I recall it was about $140.

Sorry about your wheels Boski. I have been using my old road wheels during training for that very reason. I admire your attitude about the situation. Sounds like your setting yourself up for a great race no matter the results.

PGA_Mike. Thanks for the advice. I have such a hard time taking the hills 'easy'. My mind just keeps telling my body, if you hurry we will done with this thing sooner. Hopefully I can be smart on race day. Everyone keeps saying how beautiful CDA is, I plan to take it all in on race day.

Nice job on the training everyone. When people ask me how my training is going and what I have been doing they say I am crazy. I just refer them to the group of people on-line that's even 'crazier' than I am. Keep it up and stay safe.

PGA mike- thanks for the advice. Always a good idea to take the time to enjoy the experience. The bike course has changed and there is no longer a single technical aspect of the course. Straight out and straight back. On another note I had my first tri of the season. It was an Olympic and I PRed all three aspects. Unfortunately I think I tweaked my calf in the process. A little R&R is in order for sure. I seem to have been taking a lot of R&R lately. Whoops. Hoping to do a metric ironman this Saturday to nail down some pacing.

Ugh, I have not run, or biked, in a week due to a slight strain of my right quad, so been doing nothing but swimming.  Today will be my first run since last Wednesday.  Only 24 days til race day, I am super nervous now.

Question on the hills.... What sort of speeds can we prepare for on the descents? I realize we all have varying levels of comfort but are we talking 30-40mph or 50+ range.  And how is the area for cross winds?

The cross winds will depend on the day.  The usual wind direction will be mostly a headwind on the way out/tailwind coming back.  However, in some places it swirls around a bit and can be a little tricky.  If the wind's out of the Northeast though, like last weekend, it can be more nerve wracking.

The steepest descents will probably have you pushing a bit over 40mph, depending on the wind of course.

Here's hoping for a tailwind both ways on the 24th!

Hoping you had a pain free run ? Remember they say it is better to be healthy and slightly under trained then over and banged up.

Run wont be until about 1430 this afternoon, but I am feeling really good physically.  Thanks for the encouragement!

I honestly believe 50+ is not out of the question, my one ride of it in April I show a peak of 44+ and I don't remember ever pushing it down the hills.

I would recommend not pushing it on the downhills. If youre going 35+mph don't worry about trying to pedal to gain any speed. You're likely going to go just as fast getting aero and taking a little rest. Also, when descending in aero you don't necessarily have to be in your aero bars. I find that I got just as fast if I get low and on the bullhorns with my hands near the brakes and I'm much more confident in my handling skills. If you happen to be riding a road bike with clip ons I would say you can actually get lower in the drops than you would in your aero bars. The last thing I want to see is someone go down at 40mph on race day.

X2, especially about tucking down while still on the bullhorns.  Even days without much wind, there are a couple descents where the wind swirls and can give you some wobbles.  I don't know about you guys but I tend to clinch a bit when I'm at 40+ and on the aerobars and I feel a wobble from anything!

we were hitting 50 or so in Lake Placid. It gets scary when you are going that fast.  I remember the cross winds hitting me and all I could do was scream.  I didn't hit the brakes.  I just figured I might as well let it rip.  i figured I was in trouble whether I went down at 50 or 40.

I think I am hoping for a slight south wind on race day.  temps at 75 degrees.  where do I place my request?

When you say "slight", do you mean 5mph?  Cause I'd be cool with that.

I'm SO over the wind this spring!  There are times I have felt like I'm rolling backwards.

Hoping and praying for little wind at CdA.
