Could not get up this morning.  Between the last 8 days of workouts and an incredibly busy Sunday (finally got our Christmas tree down around 10:30pm last night) there was no way I was getting up at 5am today.  I'll have to get home and ride on the trainer at lunch...

Ha ha same exact thing here. I'm going to try tonight. Good luck!

Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED

It looks like my consecutive days of training ends today. My wife is in a conference in CA until Thursday, and I am taking care of my 1 and 3 yr olds,  which means no early morning or evening trainings. Funny how this will be my first day off and I feel like a lazy bum for taking one day off.

However, I just found out there is a shower/mini gym in the office building next door to my office (kind of like a sister building to the one my office is at)  that I could use, so going to check it out and see if I can start running at lunch for the next couple of days. Being part of this group is great, the motivation is above and beyond what I had before...in the past I would have say "ok, I guess I am not training for the next few days"...now is "I cannot believe I am doing nothing today, need to find a way to train tomorrow and beyond, what is the E-gang (my nickname for our group) going to think of me?".

I agree with you - even though I know everyone here understands - there is no way I want to let down the group.  It's always good to be accountable to someone other than yourself.  Yes, it ultimately starts and stops with ourselves, but a luttle extra motiviation to lace up those shoes or clip into your pedals is always welcomed.

This is so true.  Last year I let the move and adjusting to my "new" life get in the way of my ability to train.  I would just make sure Scott was able to train and sacrifice my own, on top of the major situation with our son.  I remember reading a quote that said "it's not about having time, it's about making time".  This group and starting this year with this challenge has gotten us all off to a great start.  Pushing each other and helping each other.  What an awesome group!!!!

The hardest part is not letting what can be a very selfish sport/interest impact your loved ones.  Last week I was on my way to the gym to swim at lunch.  Through phone calls and texts I oculd tell my wife was having a day with our 2 year old.  So, I bagged the workout, picked up a healthy lunch at the nearby diner and swung home to have lunch with my wife.  I'm lucky in that work, gym, home and restaraunts are all within a few miles of each other.  Sometimes we have to look at the bigger picture too and find that balance.  It is definitely not easy.

This is exactly what I need to read today. When I got to work this morning I had a huge new pile-o-work on my desk, including another supreme court argument which is highly stressful and time-consuming, and started to re-evalutate my training goals and what I can realisitically do. But I know that if I just budget my time and work while at work (and not BT or FB) that I can get it all done and pull off a HIM in the spring.

I love being part of this group - I normally wouldnt do anything today but am going to head over the Y at lunch for a swim or short run.

Mitch - I totally agree. THis is by far the hardest part. And you definitely made the right dad decision.

Honey Stinger and Ginstinger review.

I am pretty much a GU Gel devotee.  But, I wanted to try the Honey Stinger brand gels so I picked them up at REI the last time I was there.  I got a regular Honey Stinger and a Ginsting.  Pre-run yesterday I tried the Ginsting (Ginsting contains Siberian ginseng for mental clarity, energy and increased stamina plus 32mg of caffeine from kola nut extract. Ginsting uses the same base ingredients as the rest, but boasts a richer, darker honey flavor derived from the kola nut extract. Ginsting will keep you up to speed!).  I found the gel to be a lot thinner than I was used to.  The flavor was very close to honey with a "kick".  About 5 miles into my run I took the second gel - just the normal Honey Stinger (Gold flavor which is just honey).  It was a bit thicker than the Ginsting one but I suspect that was due to the cold weather I was running in.  I found it to taste just like Honey.

All-in-all I found them both very palatable and I am likely to try them again.  I had no stomach issues but rarely do.  Based on N=1 I should be buying truckloads of them due to how well my run went on Sunday.

Garmin 305 question:

Looks like I can take it in the water up to 3 feet.  Does everyone use their garmin for swimming?  It is waterproof?  Want to make sure before I swim with it today.

I second Chris' advice. Whatever you do don't regularly swim laps with it on your wrist. That 3 feet is a hard limit as i learned the hard way as my 405 gradually degraded and eventually died (within 11months) because I swam in it regularly. I don't think the chlorine in pools do it any good either.

The 305 is NOT waterproof - the technical spec it is designed to is to save you if you dropped it in water by accident and quickly grabbed it out - not prolonged plunges as you swim :-)

Like CHris and BArry stated - use it under your swim cap - if you want to be extra safe then place it in a zip lock baggie.

The 305 also just plain doesn't work on your wrist while swimming. It loses the satellite every time your hand goes in the water. (The heart strap never works in the water, for any brand.)

Good run 40 F out only a small amount of ice so I could run without Yaks Trax or trail shoes. 6.1 miles at 47:55. My days and times got  messed up ( if I could add I wouldn't be an attorney), so I fixed both to correspond with training log.

Today I had planned a long run, but getting off night shift this morning, even though I got a good 5 hours sleep I just couldn't get myself going in time to not be out in the dark.  I was going to get on the turbo instead, but while I was walking the dog I realised that it's a lovely day and I really wanted to be outside.  So I pulled the bike off the trainer and went for a quick outdoor ride (gasp!).  In terms of training I probably got very little out of it.  It was anything but aerobic, and my legs felt quite dead afterwards from the hills.  But it really blew the cobwebs out and picked my mood up a lot.

I realised this weekend that I've got a little too attached to my turbo sessions.  They're nice and easy to do, and this time last year we were buried in snow, so outdoor rides (especially on the road bike) really weren't a good plan.  This year the weather is really mild, so I really don't need to be doing all my rides indoors.  Today reminded me why I should be getting out and doing some real riding.  No matter how good the turbo is (and mine isn't) there's no way to really mimic having to fight gravity up a steep hill...

So 40min 54sec and 9.58 miles.

Ernesto

Anybody (besides Mitch) seeing very good results from these days of training?

The 6.2 run I made today took me 58.34 on December 3 and 47:55 today. I don't know if it was the challenge or legs not being tired or first time in a week without yaks trax and trail shoes on. I am very happy with my time. On Dec 3 and today I wore Zoots.

I am going to go with yes.

Dragging this morning, but managed 51'30" on the dreadmill during lunch.  I should have HTFU'd and ran outside, but was not feeling it.  I'm taking the 2 week carb challenge so we will see how things go.  Tomorrow - Sufferfest - The Hunted!

ernestov - 2012-01-09 2:18 PM Anybody (besides Mitch) seeing very good results from these days of training? Wink

I'm also seeing good results from these days of training!  For example, yesterday's bike ride was longer than I had anticipated (4:00) and with a lot more climbing (5K+ ft plus the challenge with my gears).  However, I was able to push myself comfortably through most of the ride and also feel like I'm recovering well from such efforts.   Today I was able to run early in the morning without being sore or totally exhausted!

I also second Joyce, Samy, Jen, Mitch's and the others' comments about the huge value that it is having the encouragement and support from this great group!  I could not think what it would be like to have to push myself through the loads of training I have to go through for my IM, without being able to draw on your support! (sometimes it's overwhelming just to look at the IM plan) So thank you all for that (and to Jackie for proposing the challenge for January, maybe we could extend it through the end of April, just in time for my tapper for IM Wink)

Finally, I totally agree with Mitch's previous comment about the importance of not letting our passion for triathlon/sports, affect the quality time we should devote to our family life/loved ones, and kuddos for your decision to skip the workout and have lunch with your wife on that particular day!  And talking about family time challenge, I wanted to share the news that my wife Estefania and I recently learned that we are blessed to be expecting our third child for July!  We have two lovely daughters, so it will be great to see if we finally get a boy, or if the girl domination will continue at home!

Found some time in afternoon and went on trainer.  I followed Jorge's winter plan and completed the first part with Threshold test.  I added the winter plan to my log and plan on following that for cycling.   I will post my garmin details tonight.  For some reason at work I cannot sync my garmin.

I'm a bit confused.  I followed his HR Plan...On his plan he has a link w a cycling zone calculator.  My average HR was 144 (completed 50 min test w 30 min as hard as possible).  I enter that into the calculator and my HR-MLSS = 140.  So is 140 my  LactateThreshold or 144 or neither and this is a totally different calculation?

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/cycling-zone-calc.asp

The zone calculator came up w the following:

Training LevelsHeart Rate Range
Active recoveryless than95bpm
Endurance96116bpm
Tempo117131bpm
Threshold133147bpm
Aerobic Powermore than147bpm
Anaerobic capacityn/an/abpm

Training Levels:
Level% of HR - MLSSRPE
z1< 68%< 2
z269 - 83%3 - 4
z384 - 94%4 - 5
z495 - 105%5 - 6
z5106% >6 - 7
*Based on A. Coggan Power Levels

But when I go to the training log and add in HEART RATE ZONE I select add zone and choose cycle and then Im not sure which method Im using???  I entered my heart rate into LACTATE THRESHOLD but then the calculation doesnt match what was in the other calculator w the data above.  Below is the data from the training log calculator:

ENTER 144 into LACTATE THRESHOLD

RowHR/Pace label
(Ex. "1 - Easy")
Range data label
(Ex. "151-155")
1
2
3
4
5
6
7

ENTER 140 into LACTATE THRESHOLD:

RowHR/Pace label
(Ex. "1 - Easy")
Range data label
(Ex. "151-155")
1
2
3
4
5
6
7

So I guess what Im asking and what Im sure Im confusing everyone on is which calculations do I use for Jorge's winter plans?
