Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Karl, Iam not sure if you are on FB, but there is a FB page called Endurance Swimming: open water training. They post some great information everyday! Just looked at the pro list for Racine, I don't think Mirinda is racing but Tim O' Donnel is... I guess she will be here though, also saw that the Bennets and Bevan Docherty are coming. It will be fun to watch" I will be signing up to volunteer for it today though. I thought about racing for a nano second but saw it is sold out so that made it easy to decide ![]() Edited by Jo63 2013-07-13 7:08 AM |

![]() | ![]() Lisa just posted that Dirk is out of the water in maybe 10th. She said it was tough to count and take pictures. I may be hooking up with some other BTers today to ride the first and last 20 miles of Timberman today. NASCAR is in town, and the course goes right past the speedway so y can't do the whole course this weekend. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warren thanks for the update, just checked the IM site and didn't see any updates on Dirk but assumed he must have started. That sounds like a fun ride enjoy it. I decided not to go out and do my ride this morning. It stopped raining but there is still a small chance of rain and it is very wet out. We were going to do a hills ride today but I am not very confident in my abilities to ride well in the rain and in wet road conditions especially some of the decents so I figured better safe than sorry. Plus I didn't want to slow my friend down who is a MUCH better rider than I, he would have been waiting for me all day today. Look like I will do a very long trainer ride indoors. The good thing is I can keep an eye on Dirk now :-) |

![]() | ![]() Jeff's idea of floating on your back is a good one. As an alternative, I used a modified side stroke during my first few ocean swims. Just stay in your basic position, raise your head out of the water, and do very light scissor kicks while you use your arms to stroke and balance. You can continue to make some forward progress but still get full, deep, comfortable breaths. I could go from freestyle to this stroke and back with very little interruption. Just try not to have your legs/feet flail too much because that would be annoying to other swimmers. However you choose to do it, the key is to just keep your head out of the water and breathe relaxed so you can fully recover, then get back to swimming. Jeff is right that you very well may be doing this quite a few times, so prepare mentally and don't get concerned when you need a pause to recover. Staying relaxed mentally well go a long way to getting you on the bike! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk is out of the water...31 minutes...11th...wow, GREAT job, I know he is happy and will kill it on the bike and run too...GO DIRK!!!!!!!!!!!!. Warren and Jo, thanks for the info, I am going to try it soon. I just finished the trainer ride to tuscon and a 5 mile run, now off to my pool to learn to flaot and do Warren's side kick I'm not on FB but I think wife is. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Karl good luck with your swim workout this morning. That was a smokin' fast swim by Dirk, man he is a fish. I hope he kills it on the bike. I'm thinking he can do this in under 3 hours for sure. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Karl - Jeff's suggestion of learning to roll onto your back and flutter kick is exactly how I've dealt with any anxiety or feeling too out of breath to put my face back in the water I have had during an open water swim. It has work perfectly for me. Roll into your back and flutter kick enough to keep making progress while your rest/regain confidence. You can do it!
I just checked Dirk's times. All I can say is... Amazing! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk Killed the bike and run 2:30 something on the bike and 1:40 on the run... GREAT job! Well all i can say is I float like a rock. I'll try again tomorrow... If I lay back, water runs in my nose, if I hold my head up, my feet drop straight down...I'll get wife to work w/ me tomorrow...today it was raining and after 20 minutes I was freezing, had to come in and get a hot shower. Thanks for all the info from everyone!!! Edited by KWDreamun 2013-07-13 3:05 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just checking in and it sounds like Dirk is representing. Go JUNKIES! Karl flipping on you back is a good idea to practice and if its an anxiety issue in the water then this may provide a calming effect that will help you get everything back working again. But if its just a slight discomfort in the water then switching to a breast stoke may help you keep moving forward while keeping your head out of the water and regaining your scenes. So its been a busy week for me. I spent Monday to Wednesday tied up with work. I'm a tactical boat operator for our SWAT team and I spent Tuesday on the water training with our military's JTF2 team. They are our Seals or Delta Force team. It was fun but required a day of travel on either side. So Thursday afternoon i got the idea to join the Yarmouth leg of the Nova Scotia Heartland Tour. I had a few friends riding so I figured why not. The tour does 7 days in a row in different counties in the province. The legs are about 100k however there are options to join in at 70k and 30k left. Its free to join and is a fun event. They provide free food, water, support, etc .I couldn't believe all the free food at each stop. Really well sponsored. Sounds like fun so I figured why not do an easy 100k with friends. Well the easy lasted about 10k as we were lead out of town by a pace car. At that point I got mixed up in a group of pretty good riders at the front. There was about 20 of us and we were doing about 32-33km/h to the first rest area. Now this was just the start, we each took turns pulling and people were making a few jokes about the unusually high pace of the group. After the break our group died to about 15 riders and the pace really started to pick up. At this point we reached the first climb of the day, its only about 200ft of climbing, and the only hill in the area, but it dropped about 5-6 more. A this point we each took turns trying to really out do one another. We were flying, at one point we avg'ed 42km/h over a 5km section. By the time we reached the 3rd and final break area of the day there were only 4 of us left. The final 10k were done at a pretty easy pace in different groups. Overall I meet some new riders and had a blast, really great time. Unfortunately with all the free food it may have been the only 100k ride that Ill ever gain weight on, lol. Today was a fun day. I headed out to the local park and volunteered at the local kids tri. Its too bad my wife and daughter are away because I think they would have enjoyed it. The had kids as young as 2, yes 2. Mind you they didn't really swim as much as get dragged in a small circle by their parents but man could they bike and run. Really fun to see the different age groups. I think in about 15 years there are going to be a few that give me a run for my money. That's if I'm still walking. ![]() Hope everyone else is enjoying the weekend and getting some good workouts in. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Karl don't worry keep working at and don't get discouraged you'll get it figured it. Derek glad to see you checking in and sounds like you had a pretty busy week with work. That sounded like a great ride and I always say it's great to ride with others or ride with a group especially those that are stronger riders than you. They always push you to be better. Good luck and be safe on your upcoming ride. I know you guys probably already know that Dirk totally killed it at Munice today. Congrats again Dirk looking forward to the race report. So I was supposed to do a 5 hour 80 mile hills ride this morning but the weather scared me off. There was some rain and it was really wet out. The place we ride has some pretty good descents I am just not that confident in my ability to ride in the wet weather down those kind of hills so I passed. I felt like I would have really slowed my friend down who is a much more experienced rider than I and I didn't want to kill myself on one of those decents. So instead I opted to do a long ride on the trainer. My goal was to do what I was supposed to do 5 hours and/or 80 miles. I figured it would be a good chance to work on a long ride pacing myself for IM. So I settled in and just worked on going just hard enough where I could maintain what I think will be the pace I will use for IM. I also made sure I used a harder gear so my cadence wasn't very high as I wanted to make up for the hill work I missed this morning. The first two hours weren't bad I kept my pace and things went well. Things got tougher during hour number 3 but I was able to keep my pace up but after 3 1/2 hours I was losing my mind on there. That was the longest I've done before. I had to stop and change out my bottles and stretch out a little. When I got back on for the last hour I just picked up my pace and pushed harder. I wanted to do this for the last hour and I did well for the first 30 minutes. I was at 71 miles at 4:02 into the ride and had 9 miles to go. I wanted to nail it by 4:30 so I kept the pace up and over the next 20 minutes was able to keep it steady and strong but the last 10 minutes were the toughest. I thought I was going to pass out on the bike for real. At 4:28 I hit 80 miles and then just figured I would finish up at 4:30. I could barely move the last two minutes and was totally spent when I got off the bike. That was one of the toughest rides I think I've ever done but I got a really good workout today so I can't complain. I would have liked to have done the outdoor ride but this sort of made up for that. It also reminded me why I would rather ride outdoors than ride on the trainer. I'm not sure I'll be looking at doing anymore long rides on there any time soon! One last thing, the DeSoto 404 bike shorts are awesome! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BidDaddy, wow you have a GREAT job!!! Congrats on the ride too! Tony, you did great on the trainer..that is like 112 miles on the road. The trainer is harder on me than the road and it is so boring, like running on a treadmill. You have IM wrapped up!!! It was smart not getting on the wet roads, you have done way to much to get injured, way to train smart! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 4.5 hours on the trainer Tony! Your a beast, I'm good for 2 before I'm ready to throw the trainer out the window. Way to lay down some hurt. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Looks like the Junkies have been working hard as usual! Racing and training hard you all are amazing! Karl agree times 1,000 about being able to float on your back to recover during the swim. I had to do that in my first OWS sprint and I have no anxiety about OWS. The water was cool, I started mid pack since it was my first, someone in front of me kicked right when I lifted my head to breath and I swallowed a mouthful of that cool lake water. It took my breath away, I was gasping for breath. Still not panicking but I had to hang out there floating in the water until I caught my breath. I was so ticked off I took off like a wild women as soon as I caught my breath. My friends had warned me and I am so glad I was prepared. I have been seeing a different chiropractor who adjusted my hip and back and I am happy to report I am barely having any pain! So, I got off my lazy rear end and raced this weekend. There is a Nature Center nearby a friend of mine hosts a trail run at every year and all proceeds go to the care of the park. I raced the 10k. This is only the 2nd stand alone 10k I have ever raced! I knew it would be hard for me because I've been topped out around 5 miles for my long runs and only running 2 or 3 days a week since we have been home from vacation. Plus this trail had several short but steep climbs and lots of changes in the running surface - wood chips, cinders and dew soaked grass. I tried my best, finished strong but with not much left, my legs are sore today. It took me 1 hr 1 min which is about what I expected. The race started with 5k, 10k and 2 mile walkers all together so there were lots of people around for that part of the race. Then at 3 miles the 10k splits off and I was literally all alone for the rest of the race. I thought maybe I was last because I did not see another person for so long! Turns out there were only 13 people racing the 10k, I finished 8th and 2nd female (there were only 6 females). The good news is I raced without taking any Aleeve and had no pain from my back or hip and only a slight niggle from my foot but it was nothing to speak of. The bad news, I got really sick afterwards later in the day. I've had this before after a race but not consistently. I finally had to take a muscle relaxer and go to bed at about 8:30 last night because I had such a bad headache which I am actually still fighting today! Not good for my race motivation. Not worth racing if it wastes the rest of the day because I'm sick. I'm not sure if it was dehydration (hard to believe from only a 1 hour workout) or just allergies since a long portion of this trail cuts right through prairie grass and trail flowers but I did take my allergy pill before the race. I had some drinks from the water fountain before the race and a gel. Then maybe 5 sips of water on the course if it actually went in my mouth but it is entirely possible this really went straight up my nose |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dina I'm glad to see you checking and congrats on finishing that 10K trail run. I'm glad to hear that you were able to run pretty much pain free and that your back and hip have been feeling better since you got it straightened out. I'm sorry to hear though that you were not feeling well after the race. Not sure what it might have been to cause you to feel so bad afterwards. It possible it could have been anything that you mentioned. In any case very cool to see you decide to do a impromtu race, way too go! |

![]() Originally posted by DirkP Ok, I am looking for a Tri-Indy roll call. Here's what I have from the May roll call:
Anyone else I'm missing? Well besides the 2 east coasters who are chickening out and scared to come face to face with the Junkie train that's going to be rolling through downtown Indy. I am going to get a campsite set up for the KOA east of Indy pretty soon. This campground is about 15-20 minutes from the race site and packet pickup. It is a really easy drive on race morning with very little to no traffic. (Who else besides triathletes are going to be on the road at 6 AM on a Sunday?) Who is looking to camp? They have RV and tent camping as well as some cabins. I have never seen this campground even close to full for this particular weekend. Usually we have a space or two (at least) on either side if our trailer. I may also have some room to put a couple of people up in our camper if my girls decide not to make the trip. Those getting hotels, where are you getting rooms geographically?
I have not signed up yet but I think all of our previous plans have fallen through. I need to talk to my husband and see if he is willing to "escort" me to the city. What distance is everyone doing? I think I could manage the OLY but it would be kinda slow and I might not smiling like Brenda |

I am too close and have worked too hard to have something stupid happen now especially something that I could prevent. I do need to get out and ride in the wet weather and get more experience but I'd rather do it on roads a little less intimidating. Also, X2 on the boredom of the trainer. Interval workouts are not so bad they go by quickly, long rides are just brutal. It doesn't matter if you read, watch movies, listen to music or all of the above the time just doesn't pass fast enough! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finished up another solid week of training, just a little short of 16.5 hours. I got a 1.2 mile OWS in at the lake early this morning and I did a 10.2 mile run. The heat and humidity were absolutely brutal, I thought I was gonna die on the run. I was saturated from head to toe. I hate running when it is humid out, 6 miles in and my shoes are soaking wet along with my soaks making that squishy sound. Only 8 more weeks to go and I have never been more tired in my whole life. Part of me is looking forward to finishing this out strong and doing the race the other part of me just wants this to all be over already. I have to admit this is probably the hardest thing I've ever tried to do and is all the more reason for me to not consider doing IM next year lol. All I can think about now is how much can I do in 8 weeks to get ready for this thing. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, I need some suggestions on NYC and was wonder if you could help. Not sure if you live closee enough to know but....friend of mine got into the NyC marathon and I am going to watch and support! I was curious if you have any input on the best place to stay that would make I easy for him to get where he needs to be and easy for us to get around to see him finish or maybe in the middle of the race. We are a bunch of cheapskates so staying in manhattan is probably out of the question. The only time I have been to NYC was for a 1 night stint for new years eve and stayed in Newark! any suggestions would be appreciated but if your not sure that's fine also! Thanks |

Thanks Matt there are a bunch of places you can stay at. The place I got last year was the Days Hotel Broadway. It was on West 94th St, I think it was 20 or so blocks from the finish. I shopped around on the travel sites and booked it through Hotwire. What I would do is shop around first and see what is available. I had a hard time finding something close and not overpriced. I also had to book for two nights to get something reasonable. I made my reservation in May as well. The rates for hotels in NY are beyond insane as you are aware and I was not paying $500 a night for one! You guys can look to stay in Staten Island maybe closer to the start of the race or Queens and still get into Manhattan. NJ is also an option although I don't think I'd stay in Newark unless it was at or around the airport. Jersey City or Hoboken would be closer and easier to get you into Manhattan. What option did your friend pick to get to the start? I think you can do bus from Manhattan, Staten Island Ferry or Bus from NJ or you can get there on your own I think. That might make a difference as well as to where you might want to stay. Shop around and let me know, I can defnitely help out and if I don't know I'll ask people who will. Also when are you guys planning to come in? Are you coming the day before the race or a coupledays before the race? Let me know, I'd like to see if i can get into the city and meet you guys when you are here. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks to everyone for helping Lis out as she was trying to track me on Saturday. She thought her phone was being slow as she was trying to refresh the Ironman page for my splits but she found out later that it is Ironman that is horribly slow. I actually thought I had told her that, but maybe not. I am in the progress of completing my race report and I'll get it up sometime later today probably. It will be lengthy as usual. There was a funny moment at the end for me and not so much for Lis. She thought I told her I was going to go about 1:30 for the run and when I didn't come in at 1:30, then 1:35, then 1:40 she began to get sick to her stomach and begin worrying about what might have happened. Then when I finished at almost 1:44 all she could do is ask if I was alright. I could see the looks of concern on her face thinking I might have been in some kind of distress but it wasn't so. I was certainly thrashed but not in distress. She and I had spoken about what I had thought/hoped my splits were the night before. She put the numbers in her phone so she could have something to look at and...........never looked at her notes. I had told her I had hoped for a 1:40 HM at the end NOT a 1:30. I would have loved a 1:30 but that's not going to happen in the next 5 years! |

I'm thinking I could probably just blow a day off and meet you guys in the city on Friday and since neither you nor I are having to run there are a million great place in NYC to eat and have an awesome beer or two or three! Just keep me posted. |
