While in Cabo San Lucas Mexico, we made some new friends.  Here they are with Peggy...

We had a nice room at the stern of the ship with a big balcony.  Here is my morning view in Cabo...

Getting the laps is was easy... sort of... Three laps to the mile...around deck #3, running on the level under the lifeboats...

It was such a healthy get away, we are doing it again 1/10/09 if anyone wants to join us...

Best to all, Emerson

Yeah, I know. Too much work and not enough play/training in my life these days!

Julie - Loved the pics of your bike ride! How did the mountain bike race go? (The sausage finger is still... well, it's still fatter than any of my other fingers. But I still don't think it's broken. At least, it doesn't hurt like I'd think a broken bone would.)

Pam - Enjoy your Spring Break!

Emerson and Amy - How cool is it that you got to meet one another and your families! Great picture of all of you!

Emerson - CONGRATULATIONS on your PR! A cruise and a half-marathon??? Wow, you've been busy! Great pictures! I especially liked the one of Peggy with her new friends!

Ooops, I'm cooking up some chicken, and I think it's starting to burn! Better go check!

I love the pictures, everyone looks so happy. Amy what a lovely family! And Emerson you have a very bright eyed courageous wife, after all she's been through she has a beautiful smile on her face and I bet she brings joy to many, that's what you call a survivor and a wonderful example of what life is all about.

Amy the kids are soooooo cute, enjoy every min. you have with them as they grow, it goes by soooo quick, and thank the husband for being a supportive spouse, I have one also but many women don't.

Emerson I love the photos of the water and cruise ship, I love to travel and hopefully we will meet up one day. Enjoy joining the real world again.

Well--somehow I survived my 4th half-mary.  It was ridiculously windy out there.  Going out of downtown, the wind was head-on.  I really hoped that meant that we'd have it behind us for the 2 mile uphill to finish the course.  No such luck!  I blew up during mile 11 thanks to the hill and wind.  I had been on track to beat my PR by about 4-5 minutes.  I still squeeked in about 30-40 secs under but it was close.

Hope you guys are all having a great weekend. I'll be recovering today and then teaching a transition clinic to about 35 people tomorrow.  We're doing a group ride of the sprint course afterwards. Hopefully, 2 laps, so I'll get in about 25 easy miles to loosen my legs up.

Good job on the race this past weekend! and transition  training...can you video tape? I am in need of such practice! what are some of the pointers you can give to this rookie!? hope your day off was restful! you are another one of those fab cheerleaders...and I am not sure if you have missed a single day of inspires...thanks captain!! means a lot!

Let's see--some basic tips

-Make life easy. Simple is better.  Tri shorts/top are much easier than trying to put dry top on wet body

-Yankz or some other elastic/speed laces make T2 (bike to run) much easier

-Race belts are cheap and easy (like some of my friends ), but you can preload your race number and just take 10secs to clip it on at T1. Some races require it on the bike, others just on the run.

-I'm also a big fan of chip straps.  They are neoprene and hang onto your chip while not cutting into your ankle

If you buy the 3 things I suggested, you might spend close to $20.  It's well worth it just for the ease of use/reduced wear and tear on your body.

PRACTICE!!  You feel like an idiot but practice a couple of times going thru the transitions, including how you are going to lay out your stuff.  When you walk up to your spot, the first things you should be able to grab are for T1 (swim to bike).  Put on your helmet/sunglasses first, then socks/shoes/etc.  When you come back, take off helmet last. Saves you from any major penalties

At quick glance, i thought it was rude that someone was yanking Peggy up by the hair.  Shows why I occasionally need to slow down and not multitask so much.

I agree with all the advice that Eric gave but I totally support more than anything the transition practice.  I will actually add it to the end of a bike workout for the last four weeks before my triathlon.  Ron has a nice way to give yourself credit for practicing in the transitions in the sports area.  It is actually just really nice to also teach your legs how to do it.   GOOD LUCK!!

Eric,

Somehow I missed your 1/2 marathon.  Congrats on the PR.  I think your race rolled off your blog before I got back to from the trip.  Way to keep at it when the road was tough!!!  Keep the faith, it gets better every time!  EK

So I need the advice of the smart ones in the group (which is everyone )  I want to sign up for a local bike ride called Minnesota Ironman.  The distances are 30, 62, and 100 miles.  I know for a fact I am not going to do the 100, but I am playing back and forth with the 62 and the 30.  There is a 8 hour time limit so I am not in any hurry.  But I am not also scheduled for a long bike ride that weekend or anytime around that day for the half Ironman training plan.  So I am stuck.  If I did the 30, that would be cool.  But part of me wants the additional challenge and it would also prove to me that I could handle the bike ride for my half ironman.  So anyone have any advice????

go for the gusto...do the 62 miles...you can do that. My sister who has not ridden a bike in over 30 years (which was I would imagine before you were born!!??!) just started riding since I began training for triathlons and she was given my sister n laws bike that passed away....she just did a tour de Houston last weekend. She rode 70 miles....this was with the help of the past month and a half of spin classes and an occasional weekend ride of maybe 15-20 miles on the weekend...so, if my old sis can do it....my young sis (you) can do it! go get em tiger!!!!

Yep, here's my advice!

Do the 62 miles!

Worst case, you decide it's time to stop before you get to 62, and decide to try it again next year.... Best case, you challenge yourself and hit that 62 goal - and you prove to yourself that you can do it!

wanna borrow it...you can get your ride and run in at the same time....plus you do not have to buy those expensive running shoes to keep them feet happy! WERKS for me!
