Remember how I was complaining about being sore?  I felt fine this morning, got back in the pool and did 500 yds for the first time.  Then, just to make sure I had really done it, I did it twice more.  So I did my first 500s and my first 1500 yard swim.  I love that swimming gives me all these milestones to get excited about.  It really motivates me to get back in the pool again.

I'm starting to feel like I may actually be able to do a 750m swim by the end of June.  It seemed almost impossible at the beginning of February when I was struggling to put 2 laps together.

Happy Wednesday!

Yay!  you are rocking in the pool.  I better get my butt in the pool and do some laps.  If I don't, you will be out-swimming me in no time.

Oh, BTW...I'm not dead, just exhausted.  I need to have a few more hours in every day....or maybe a second me.

You have a wetsuit, right?  (brrrrr)

Glad to hear your workouts went well this week.  There's nothing like a good workout to improve your mood.

Good luck this weekend!

Most definitely - I'm looking for a neoprene cap before the race too!

if you don't find one wear a couple of silicone caps.  They insulate fairly well.

Matt237 - 2009-04-18 5:10 PM Question for all the Yoga masters out there.  I really need some help with my flexibility.  I watched the Flexible Warrior videos they have here on BT.  They looked pretty good.  Any other recommendations for a stretching/flexibility beginner?

If you let me know what parts of your body you want to work on, I can recommend some specific poses.

The Flexible Warrior videos are good.  Karen has a bunch of DVDs out, but I've never seen them.

You could also look for The Athlete's Guide to Yoga by Sage Rountree.  There is a book and a DVD.  Sage is also a triathlete, and the book is written with triathletes in mind.  There are some really good warm up and cool down routines to combine with workouts.

There are a bunch of beginner yoga videos out there.  Rodney Yee does a good one (and he is good at explaining the poses).

If you want to try more online, check out the Yoga Today site (www.yogatoday.com).  They post a different class every day and each class tends to focus on one area or theme.

Bet you're sorry you asked that question now!

Just an update.  They got a lot of the cancer that was causing my Grandmother a lot of pain out with some surgery.  She's far to old to treat it, though.  At 90 years old, any chemo would get her before the cancer does.  She's recovered enough from the surgery that we got her moved to a home where 24 hour nursing care is available.  Her mobility is way, way down, but she's doing ok.  Before the cancer really acted up and the surgery, she was pushing all her church friends around in their wheel chairs.  She does have dementia and early alzheimers as well, and there have been good days and bad days.  She told me and my wife about graduating at 16, going to Delta State because she wanted to be a teacher, and taking weekend trips to the Peabody in Memphis.  It was stuff I'd never heard about before.  Then the next day she was talking to people that didn't exist and offering me punch and cookies.  It's been tough on my Dad to see his mom like this, but he's doing well.

Have a great weekend everyone.  My friends that were in New Zealand for two years have made it back, and we're going up to Miss. State with them this weekend for some baseball, hanging out by a lake, and a music festival thing.  Then on Monday, my recovery weeks officially end, and it's right back into the Oly training

I hope your grandmother is still resting comfortably.  You and your family have been in my thoughts.

Well group I survived the cold water and my first tri of the year.  My times weren't quite what I wanted and I spent most of the run getting down on myself for not doing what I wanted earlier in the race.  So I didn't put much effort into the run.  I felt while running the race that I wasn't accomplishing anything that I wanted to.  However, with some time to think about the day, I think I may have been a bit hard on myself.  And I wasn't the least bit sore or tired later in the day or on Sunday so I was happy with that.

I definitely have some work to do before June but this was good insight into my current conditioning.  Another good note - I found a swim instructor who specializes in OWS so we are starting hour lessons next Weds.  YEAH!!!

I haven't gotten to read your race report yet, but I'm sure you are being too hard on yourself.  You probably lost some time chipping the ice off your wetsuit in T1.

I should add that once you've done it by yourself a few times and feel comfortable with the basic poses, you should go to a class.  Having a teacher help you with your alignment will make sure you get the most out of the poses and make sure you're not doing anything that could hurt.  (Particularly watching that knee.)

Hi group -

I hope everyone is well and training is going well.  And for those in warm sunny vacation spots - I hope you are having a drink for me.

I have recovered mentally from my race on Sat.  I just hate not meeting my goals.  LOL  Anyway - I've had 2 good swims this week and a great bike this morning on the trainer.  I have a sprint tri on Sunday - it's going to 80 degrees.  Luckily we start very early in the AM.

I start OWS lessons next Weds. and will relax a bit with another recovery week before hitting my big 10 day stretch that will include a century and 2 half marathons.  Then I think I start the downhill slide to my taper week then the BIG ONE!!!!!!

My muscles start to ache just looking at your race schedule!

Sunday should be fun for you.  It will be nice and warm.  Where is the swim?  Are you going to need to defrost afterwards like last week?

I swam 500 yds in 9:35 this morning, which is the first time I've ever gotten below 2 min/100 yds.  Look out, Bill!  I'm creeping up on your slow, relaxed, taper week pace.   I managed to do the whole workout averaging just above 2 min/100 yds, so it was my fastest ever.  I've been doing a little happy dance in my head all morning.

And I passed the guy I was sharing the lane with.  It counts even though he was old and paddling along on his back (and not kicking) at the time, right?

As long as he was alive, it definitely counts!  2:00 / 100 is a great milestone - nice work.

Samantha - I enjoyed your race report, even though you weren't 100% happy with the race.  Impressive job on the bike especially I thought.

My work has now restricted browsing sports-related sites to a few mins per day, which means I can't keep a BT window open and check up on everyone as much as before.  Also the flash/java/whatever version that we have is from approx 1984, so it can't handle the fancy new updates to the training logs.  Oh well - I will try to keep up from home.

For training, I am going to try to be a bit more structured and stick to a plan, instead of just having vague goals for each week.  Over the winter, I was good about keeping to those goals but recently I have been getting lazy and it's time to kick my own butt.  I may also need some yoga lessons to be able to do that...

Hello

After several crummy days of cold, rainy weather, northern Virginia is emerging from the clouds into the sun.  This weekend is almost going to be too hot for Spring - mid 80s.  But I won't complain.  I have another tri this weekend and unlike the late 10am start and cold water temps, this is the opposite.  6am start in a warm indoor pool.

I know I'm a gluten for punishment but I've set my goals for this weekend.  I did this course in the fall of 2007 - my second tri ever and had a pretty slow time.  So I'm looking to be a bit faster.  ;-)  I feel this time I based my time goals on reality not what I swim/bike/run in my dreams.  LOL

I'm a little paranoid about my tires since I had 2 flats last weekend the morning of the race and during my bike I heard a ba-dump, ba-dump the entire time.  When I got finished and looked at my tire, I asked my husband is that normal to have a big bubble in the tire.  I'm so lucky it didn't blow.

I like having a plan.  I'm using the BT plans, and  I have every workout from now until my planned Oly at the end of September in my day planner.  No thinking about what I have to do, I just do what it says and trust that I'll be ready.  It works really well with my OCD too.

As far as the butt kicking, you'll be able to do that if you stretch your quads enough.  Tongue out

I agree - having a plan keeps you focused and the BT plans are good.  I'd just make sure you are comfortable w/ the plan b/c if you think it's a lot at first look, it will be even worse halfway through.  This winter, I scanned all of the plans until I found one that I said to myself - I like this one and I can do these hours.  And I've barely missed a workout to date unlike last year when I picked a plan that didn't match the time/energy I had to commit.

The run is the same as the swim.  Just practice - since I started running about 2 years ago I've trimmed about a minute and half off my 1/2 marathon pace and 2 min. off my 5K pace.

Now if I could only do that on my swim.  I may not have taken much time off my 100 splits but I can swim farther.  Not sure what that means - probably something bad.

So while I am thinking about sharks in the water, you think about big, hungry grizzly bears running after you.  Wink
