hey all... I've been a little pre-occupied... from my blog today...
This past weekend, my wife and I noticed that our 2-year old had a number of dark bruises. Being that he is two, we are used to seeing bruises on his shins. But they are usually lighter bruises.. this is typical. The bruises we saw now however... bigger, darker, on his chest, on his back, on his hip... these were not ordinary bruises. So today I took him to the pediatrician. He agreed, these didn't look normal. So we took some blood and ran some tests.
Results came in and we found his platelet count was in the 4000's. The low end of normal, if I heard the doc correctly is 150k. None of the data showed anything horrendous like leukemia or lymphoma... instead it's something called ITP. I don't know what it stands for... but essentially his antibodies, now that they kicked the RSV's @$$, are in berserker mode. The antibodies are now attacking the platelets. So this is all very treatable, but it has to be done in the hospital since it is all intravenous treatment.
So I got to ambush my son twice... once at the doc's lab and again tonight at the hospital to insert the IV. yay.
He should be in the hospital 2 or 3 days, but we are at the mercy of the platelet count. We need to see it start to go back up.
Awwww, poor little guy. You have my best wishes, Preach, to see what they can do for your son. Sending you some hope, care, and extra-positive vibes out to you.
