Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread That Yahoo article doesn't make me feel any better about the race. If the dissolved oil is making people sick then it might not matter if any visible oil makes it to PCB. On a more positive note I thought it would be cool to compare my totals for this year to last year since we're halfway through as of today.

Thought you'd want to read it.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20100701/ts_csm/311973 /> Article points out to me how much the officials don't know about if the water is safe and tests may not be all that helpful or accurate. When I swim 2.4 miles I get lots of water in my mouth...idea of oil or chemical dispersant in the water I would get in my mouth doesn't seem at all healthy. I do IMs for fun, possible health issues short or long term for a hobby doesn't seem worth it. My gut right now is if they give us the option to swim or not, I'd choose not swim. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread The article didn't make me feel much better either. I'm hoping they will announce a new swim venue and we can all go on as planned, but I guess we'll see. On a funny note dealing with this: My 11 year old son obvious watches too much TV. He asked why a huge Brita Filter couldn't be used to clean the water since they claim they have the cleanest drinking water. If only it was that easy. Hope everyone has a happy 4th of July. |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Kathy, I'm pretty much in agreement with you. I don't need to do an IM badly enough to risk health issues later on in life due to the massive amounts of chemicals their dumping into the gulf. If they don't move the swim I'm going to start having serious concerns about this. I just hope they let us know with ample time for backup plans. |

Welcome t-diddy! How's the training going? To the group: I know it's still a long way off, but I spoke to a friend in Panama City today and he said the beaches are clear as of now and look good. People are swimming in the ocean. They are being told that the current may deliver the oil to areas beyond both PC and Destin. Fingers crossed! |

Regular 72 Baltimore, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I also don't find the article reassuring. But the fact that its still a few months away calms my nerves a bit. Being as this is my first IM Im determined to do this. I propose as a back-up back-up back-up plan that we (BT group) plan our own race if this one doesn't happen. Even if I have to swim 2.4miles in a hotel pool I'll do it! The whole family is coming down and have their houses and flights booked already. No pressure right? Oh and here are my measley June numbers. Big focus on the bike coming up in July. As you can see I obviously wasn't training for much longer than an oly in 2009.

New user 9 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I did Steelhead a couple of years ago. It was great for a first HIM. The start was cool, we all lined up on the pier and jumped in all at once. The water was glass smooth and Lake Michigan clear. A perfect MI day! The run was kind of warm, very little shade, but the bike was awesome, very few hills and lots of shade. |

I cannot control the oil, the tarballs, the chemicals nor what they decide to do about it. I will cross that bridge when I get to it, I guess! |

Haven't used speedfill - I have a profile design aero bar mounted bottle, plus a bottle on my frame and 2 behind the seat. I like the profile design one - easy to fill on the fly. |

I'm using 3 water botters (2 behind the seat one on the frame) plus an aero bottle- got bottles all over the bike! I have to ask... Why so many bottles? That's fine for training but severe overkill for a race. I run one bottle on the frame and one torpedo style between the aero bars. Put nutrition in one of the bottles and water in the other. There are bottle exchanges every 10-15 miles on any 70.3 or 140.6 race course where you can get more water. It's not like you're going to drink 24 ounces out of water every 10 miles. Keep it simple. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I train and race differently. When I train can't get bottle exchange every 10 miles so I have aerobottle, one frame cage and two behind my saddle and depending on how long I'm riding bring 2-4 bottles. For race I'll use aerobottle and frame bottle may drop behind saddle holder but depends on my final nutrition as I do home made maltodextrin mix so no picking that up at aid stations. I talked to someone at the HIM I volunteered at instead of raced and he had one of those speedfill bottles on his frame. He loves it but said it took some adjusting to the added weight when he would start out and it was full. I did pick up some Power Bar Endurance from REI for $8/ for a canister for 52 servings. It is almost exact nutritional content as the new Power Bar Ironman drink they are selling on line now only in liquid form. I can try it less expensively to see if I like it. |

Regular 65 Ventura | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Thank you for taking the time to respond - I use carbo-pro 1200 for my nutrition / hydration. mix it with water to dilute or thin it out. for 140.6 i usually go thru 2.5 - 20 oz bottles . (160ml of carbo-pro per 20 oz h2o) dumping it into aero bottle as i ride no other nutrition no gu's or power bars etc .... but you did make me think ... perhaps one bottle of undiluted carbo-pro grabbing h2o at aid station .... then its just one bottle and aero bottle - you are right i need to keep it simple ... this is complicated |

I totally agree on the keep it simple...I have 2 3-hour bottles of Infinit, and aero bottle of water an extra bottle of water "just in case". I don't like to risk dropping a bottle on the course or in the exchange - if I miss grabbing one, I don't want to go without and surely don't want to go back for one. I sweat like a pig...need lots of liquids |

Regular 65 Ventura | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Thank you for responding Kathy - I use carbo-pro 1200 for my nutrition , so I have same issue as you at races ...At 140.6 I usually go thru 2.5 bottles of nutrition/ hydration (app. 160ml of carbo pro per 20 oz ) Behind the seat I got two 20 oz bottles(plus the weight of the xlab) thats at least the 40 oz in the speed fill.... wouldn't need the aerobottle ... so I'll only be down 10oz... but I can always use special needs bag... or not if I choose ... Regular 72 Baltimore, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread So many different nutrition/hydration setups. Im curious, no one has mentioned solid nutrition. I consider myself lucky that I can eat most things biking and running. Im curious if there are any nutrition experts (which basically means you've done this before in my book) that can weigh in on solid vs liquid nutrition. I prefer to carry 1 bottle of "sugar" basically a homemade sugar orange juice drink, and the other bottles water and then eat every 30 mins usually powerbar pieces but am trying out more natural products like Lara bars or just plan figs, raisins, homemade power bars etc. Do you get better complete nutrition from the premixed solutions? I can comfortably take in 200 to even 300 hundred calories an hour but the question is are they the right calories. I suppose I will find out once my bricks get over 5 or 6 hours. Im always open to suggestions and advice from the vetrans on here. |

Is 4 water bottles "overkill" since you can pick up water or Gatorade at aid stations ? But wadda do if ya drink your nutrition ? I race with one cage bottle on the frame and one aero bottle. I did IMAZ two years ago with a Neverreach instead of a traditional aerobottle. I really liked it for long rides because it holds a lot more water and sometimes I ride in the middle of nowhere....even wear a camelbak to train. I'm not sure what I'll do this round....but I know it will either be the Neverreach or an aero bottle. I already have enough extra weight around my middle...I don't need to bring any more out on the course! So, I am solid two bottler....always have been, always will be! Now, IF my bike had a second bottle holder on the frame I would consider having my second nutrition bottle on there. Right now that has to reside in special needs because I just don't have another holder on the frame and I hate behind the seat holders. I'm toying with the idea of going more "solid" this year in order to be able to skip the second bottle in special needs. I realize weight is more of a concern when you are climbing...and IMFL is a flat course. But still, I don't see a need to carry that many water bottles out on the bike. It isn't going to be that hot. Aid stations every 10 miles should be plenty if you never let your aero bottle get TOO empty. I would refill mine with a partial bottle picked up from an aid station as soon as the aero bottle got half full. That way if I missed the bottle exchange I still had enough water to get me to the next aid station if necessary. |
