Bopper - 2010-01-21 9:15 PM

Went for a swim tonight... even tho' I didn't much feel like it, because I had another hard day at work. My thinking was that I should DO something, to loosen up the muscles... and I think it worked. After the first 500 - 600m I started feeling better... but before that it was horrible and hard. I perservered tho and ended up swimming an easy 750m, with 15 sec rest after each 50m... not because I had to, but in order to be relaxed, which is what I needed the most.

Was thinking about what Gary said for swimming and tried pulling a LOT of water in fewer strokes. I only counted once, near the end and I was pulling about 18 strokes/length... yet still swimming 1:00/50... and for me that's pretty good. Relaxed, yet steady.

I was thinking about stroke count today.  My swim coach said we should be at 12 strokes from where the lane markers are painted, not totally end to end.  Reason being we should be stream lining to this point and no need for strokes.  I think I'll try counting it on Monday.  I haven't done it since last year.

The only thing to make you faster is time in the saddle...IMO!!!!You can do intervals and hill repaeats ( Are you anywhere near Clermont, those are the only Fla hills I know) Is this your first season?

Just to give you an idea of how time really plays a big part in biking. I have a friend I met here on BT last Spring. He did his first sprint in May. I'm not sure what  his bike time was but I am doubt ful it was much over 15 mph for 15 miles. He biked all season at least 4 times/week. In October we rode our first century together and avg'd over 16 mph on a rolling hill course. If he were to do just 15mph he could have avg'd 18. He biked about 3500 miles and lost about 50 pounds. I have no doubt he will be even faster in the coming years. 3mph increase in one season is pretty good . Its even better that he could ride a century comfortably in 6 months of cycling

Its my first season of real training.  I did a few sprints in 2008, but was sidelined in 2009 due to nagging injuries.  Did better today - rode 20 miles and averaged 18.75 mph.  I know with time my speed will improve just like running, I just get uncomfortable after about 10-12 miles and feel like I need to stretch my legs.  Today I just tried to push through it and maintain a consistent pace and felt better.
I do have a series of 8 -10 hills that are about 1/4 mile length that lead up from the lake that I run.  The local runners club does hill workouts there every Tuesday at 5am.  I guess I could try them??
BTW - finished up the IronMan challenge with the ride this morning
January's totals:
Bike:7h 14m 07s  - 119.85 Mi
Run:6h 33m 30s  - 46.55 Mi
Swim:3h 54m 47s  - 11000 Yd
Strength:1h 35m
Core Training:20m
Pilates:30m
Stretching:3h 50m
Yoga:30m

Now its another kids birthday party at 11:30 and some stuff around the house - taking tomorrow as a rest day.
Have a good weekend everyone

Way to go Mike.  1 iron man complete!!!!

I did my first brick this morning since this summer.  It felt great.  20 minutes for 6.5 mile on the bike and 20 minutes for 2.33 for the run.  Both inside.  I guess that would be about a 10K and a about a 4K.  Am I close?

Enjoy your Weekend everyone.  We are off to the north for a little snowboarding action.  They are calling for rain.  Rain, rain go away.

WOO HOO for  Helen and Mike!! Nice job completing the Ironman Challenge!!!!

Kevin 3 hours on a trainer...Really????????????Yikes! I did it once and that was enough. Can you say bored to death. I just cant sing that long( I listen to music to breal up the boredom)

Lisa I love your new avitar...very sweet.

I walked 3.5 miles today( a little over 5K for my canadian friends) and swam 1500 with one of by BT buddies. Swimming is much more fun with someone else to push you.

I highly recommend Masters classes for anyone who wants to improve their swimming. It is so helpful to have a coach assign the drills and to have others who challenge you abilities. For those of you in the US, if you google US Masters swimming you will find if there is a group near your home/pool

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Hows things Duanne? Are you running.

You betcha.  2 miles tonight.  Nice easy run. I wanted to do 5 miles today, but life took over and had too much to do today. splits of 8:32 & 8:20.

I'm going to try to get out before church tomorrow and run some more.

I thin in about an hour, I am going to go run 5 or 6.  Might end up walking some (I hope not) and it certainly won't be at an 8.5 mm pace but I need to get moving.  Going to do my pt first so I get all stretched out.  Temps are supposed to start falling in the afternoon and it will be windy, that is, if my wife is home and I can get out of the house.

Ran yesterday and ran today, yay!  I couldn't do more than 5's and 1's but I'm just glad I got out there and finally done something.

I might run another 30 min tomorrow but that will be on the treadmill though, before strength training.

Have a great day everyone!

Ummm..........you did 2 miles....and now you are gonna do 6???
Not the best idea Duane.
You REALLY do have to ease back into it........
Try doing 3 instead.
I know I am ultra conservative......but I just want you to be ok!
