I was thinking that I was slacking on the bike miles so far during my 20wk training but I think I made up for a few of them this week

I'm right there with you!  I start the plan today.  Doing the run and the swim at lunch.  Worried about getting my next few days in with the blizzard coming through, but I will power through whatever I can get done.  If we lose power, riding the trainer indoors to keep warm may be a welcome idea.  But if we are snowed in by Wednesday, I will definitely be missing that day's swim!

I am training for the Cutting Edge Half Classic in Effingham, IL on June 19.  It will be my first ever tri (unless I work an oly or sprint in before race day).  Also have ambitious plans of doing the Full Rev3 on Sept 11 this year...

I hear ya with the weather coming (assuming you're also in the midwest). I'm getting my run in today at lunch on the treadmill at the office because I'm guessing I won't make it in tomorrow.  Hopefully the streets are cleaned enough by the weekend so I can get my long run in outdoors. I can't bring myself to do any more than 45 minutes on a treadmill.

If you're looking for a good oly destination race to dust off the cobwebs, you should try Memphis in May. My local group suggested it to me and I'll be signing up today. Apparently there's plenty of BBQ to go around and Elvis sings the National Anthem. That's enough for me!

I just started the plan and I'm working towards the same race! Where do you live (if you don't mind me asking)? I am not far from the race - 25 min or so. Not my first tri but my first 1/2 IM. Cutting Edge has a sprint in May that is a really a lot of fun too.
Let me know if you have any questions about the course. I've raced at the venue lots of times. Did the 1/2 IM aqua/bike last year.  Chickened out of the run, actually I never even thought about it. I was just trying to build my bike miles and wasn't worried about running. Anyway, I'm rambling, good luck with your training!

Thanks for the great response.  Memphis is a bit far for me (10+ hour drive), plus it holds alot of bad memories for me.  You can have Beale St, BBQ, and Elvis... Laughing  I've already gotten my fair share of it all.

trigal- would love to keep tabs with you on Effingham.  I live near Gurnee.  Used to live down in Bloomington-Normal area.  I've read some of the race reports.  People complain alot about the heat and lack of shade on the course.  Otherwise, it sounds relatively flat and laidback.

Question for ya...Last week (week 10 of the plan) was a bike focused week.  Put in a lot of hours and ended up getting sick on Sunday and missing my 2 1/2 hour bike yesterday.  This week is a step back week, so nice and light workouts all week to recover a bit.  Should I go ahead and replace the short ride scheduled for tomorrow with the long ride that I should have done on Sunday?

trigal38 - 2011-01-28 9:30 AM I'm just getting ready to start this plan Sunday. Am I too late to jump in this thread? I have some questions already......

Welcome! What questions can I help you with?

I'm just wondering if I can move things around a little on the schedule but I'm afraid the workouts might have a specific purpose scheduled the way they are. I really only have 2 days a week to swim during the winter months so can I combine the distances and just do longer swims on those days? I swim all year around 5-6000 yards a week so endurance wise this is not an issue for me.

There is one day a week that has a bike and run scheduled on the same day. I have some trouble with achy knees so I was wondering if it might be better to switch that run to different day? I'm just not sure if it is scheduled that way to prepare your legs for running off the bike?

Thanks for your help!

Both of your schedule modifications make sense and should pose no problem as far as the effect on the plan. Like others have said, when following a static plan it is expected that you will have to modify things a bit to make them work for you. You have done so with common sense, so good on you!

Not too bad, thanks for asking! I did the run at a very easy pace ( following knee pain after 11 miles on Saturday). I am still freaking out a little about the whole 'HIM' thing, but I am also kind of excited.

My target race is Patriot in East Freetown, MA

What is your long ride this weekend? If it's a recovery ride, do the long ride then. Not during the week...you need the recovery.

My first pains of training. Yesterday.  Sigh...

Well I was on the spinner yesterday and felt some pain/discomfort right on the inside of my right knee.  Towards the front of the leg directly to the inside and also a little bit above my right kneecap.  I decided to ride through easily and do a 30min brick with a little discomfort.

Today I had a nice swim and then tried to get an easy recovery run in with the discomfort but it really didn't feel good.  Iced it and adviled, and going to just swim for the next two days.  Puh-lease go away!!

You might also try a compression wrap after you ice it. That helps my knees a lot when they get fired up. Hope it goes away quickly for you.

Just the body pushing back a bit! You did a lot of riiding last week. Ice wrap for 30 minutes after exercise and ease back a bit and it will go away.

I'm on an Olympic Maintenance Plan until April then I'm gonna switch to HIM Plan for a race I'm planning on in September...

it'll be my first HIM after only doing sprints for the past seven years...

only worried about swimming for 30-40 minutes straight - I'm a pretty good swimmer (relatively speaking) so I'm really just worried about keeping focused for that period of time and pacing myself...

Good luck to everybody here with their training - THIS WEATHER IS KILLING ME!

Jessica-
You asked how I got into tri?  The seed was actually planted almost 13 years ago when I was in San Diego.  A fellow coworker did them.  I remember thinking that I would like to try, but I thought it was only for people who could be competitive, not amateurs like me.  A couple years back, I ran into a tri newbie.  She had just completed her first which was part of the Mermaid series in Cali.  That's when I realized any Joe Schmoe with the gumption could do one.  I was going to do the Sept Mermaid in San Jose, but I let life get in the way.  Then last year, my boss said he was going to train for a marathon, so I agreed to train for a tri.  After looking at all the distances, I figured I needed to try for the HIM in order to actually challenge myself.  Was on track to do the Tempe HIM in Oct when I did a last minute move from Cali to Chicago.  So here I am, training for a HIM and an IM this season...

Brand spanking new here... doing my first tri - HIM Providence, RI this July.  Have completed 3 marathons in the past 2 years, swam competitively thru HS and a year in college and just got a road bike in Nov that I'll be attaching aeros to...  As for the training, thought it was best to do a half marathon for fun and keep me moving thru the cold winter months, that's on Feb 27th. After that head first into the beg training plan posted on this site.  Stoked to have found a beginners group and I am positive I'll have questions/pains throughout...
My goal 6/6:30 we'll see how well the training goes and how my body holds up!

Welcome to BT. You come to the tri world with some great background and should do well with the HIM. Following the plan will set you up nicely for Providence.

Cape Cod is a great place. Of all the places my wife and I have traveled to Chatham is one of our favorites.

Oops!  I didn't read this until after I went for the ride.   However, I am glad that I did.  I just decided to go out and cruise it.  Feels good to get some longer miles in the saddle.  Gonna get to that finish line for sure!  Now I will follow the plan this week and rest rest rest.
