Was going to go running, but the streets are covered in ice where I live.  Given the injury today is now an off day.

i hate the treadmill but I'll go inside if its icy.  Hopefully it warms up soon.  I may have a deposition in Amarillo, Texas, if so I'm hoping for nice, warm outside running weather.

I know what you mean about the shoe changing as they upgade it. I do buy from road runner as we don't have much selection for good running shoes where I live. I actually didn't buy my Asics from them though-I relied on the local TAF guy who is more weigh guy and softball player than runner. Went back to RR for advice and am happy again

This was posted in Tri Talk under the "Do you need USAT certification..." thread.  Kel asked me to cross post.

KSH - 2011-02-03 4:45 PM  Now, my USAT Level I certification helped get me into that role. That along with my experience has made me a good beginning coach.

jsnowash - 2011-02-04 8:30 AM I will just say this, though - a coach's "education" has to start somewhere! For some, that educational path begins USAT certifcation.

These two statements bring up a very good point.  USAT certification may be that educational jumping off point that enables someone to be a begin learning to be a coach.  It should not necessarily qualify someone to market themselves as a coach of beginners.  A distinction that seems to be overlooked too often.

In many cases, people who are new to the sport don't know what questions to ask a coach, or what feedback to provide, during the course of a training plan.  When you couple that with a coach who doesn't have the experience to understand how different athletes react to stress, how subtle warning signs are identified and how to adjust athlete plans accordingly, you create an opportunity for injury.

When I chose my first coach, I picked someone who was not USAT certified but who came on a recommendation.  The attribute I sought most was the knowledge to not simply tell me the "what" of my training plan but the ability to articulate the detailed "why."

With each two week schedule, my coach would lay out the structure of the training, the basis for that structure, and the response he was looking for out of my body.  That information provided me the foundation to ensure I was returning him the feedback necessary to adjust my future schedules.

There are a number of different kool-aids in endurance training, each with a distinct approach and reasoning.  If a coach does not understand or can not communicate the reasons for a specific approach, then how can they ensure they are getting the best possible performance from the plan.

Coaching is not about simply taking a formula and applying it blindly.  Coaching requires you have the depth of understanding to give the basis for workouts at both a macro and micro level.  Otherwise, you're offering nothing more than someone can get from the training plans here.

Gyms are closed here until 10 am.  Shocked how a little ice shuts a whole city down.  Guess when it's an anomoly it does that.  BTW Amarillo is, how do I say this nicely, a hole.  Running with the tumbleweeds might be interesting though.

Watch out for rattlesnakes.  I was traveling across the top of Tejas and stopped to get out of the 100+ heat for a little while at a roadside picnic table/shelter.  The table had a dead and decomposing rattlesnake draped on it.  The smell kept me out of the shade, so I paced while I had a snake and then hopped back on the (motor)bike.

Just checked out a map of Texas - good luck.  Bring a book.

Oh and Kelly you better darn well break your diet and eat some brisket and drink some beer if you step foot in Texas.  You'll get blacklisted otherwise.

Last time I was in Texas I ate lots of seafood, then again I was in Galveston.

Still trying to figure out how everything can be bigger and better in Texas.

Shoes: Trainer: NBs or Brooks.  Oly/Sprin: Zoots trainer, sockless.  The Zoots trainer has a bit more structure than the racer for a frankenstein runner such as myself.  I also have a pair of Vibrams, will run shoeless when on vaca on Martha's Vineyard and just got a pair of Newton trail shoes (the green hornet called, he wants his shoes back, they are comical looking)

14 is not cold.  it was 6 when i left the house this morning.

Love 2XU products, expensive but worth it.

did a little spin class/run brick at lunch today, will try and get on the rollers or treadmill this evening.  feel like i need a little more exercise.  tomorrow mornign I have a long ride planned which mean i need to get up early and hit the drainer before my little ones wake up.

10 Miler Erica and I were supposed to run in Maine on Sunday was cancelled because of, you guessed it, SNOW!

Not happy.  Think I'm going to do a 5K with Erica on Sunday close to home and then we'll run out another 10 or so miles after the race.

I will chime in about the coaching as well.  I am definitely a smart person, but I do some stupid things.  My first coach was one that I found via a recommendation on a local triathlete club forum.  I went solely off of that and hired this person.  We rarely, if ever, talked about nutrition, and my workouts would be along the lines of run 8 miles at marathon pace, swim, etc.  I never had any idea what I was meant to be working on with each workout.  I was able to complete my first half ironman last summer, but it was a miserable experience, in that my run was painful, and I must have thrown up between 7-10 times on the run, largely because of nutrition.  But I finished.

I knew I could do better, so I planned to complete another half ironman a few months later, and I was given a recommendation for a great coach.  I got a plan for the entire duration of the training schedule and every workout actually had a purpose!!!  I did time trials and sweat tests (which I had not done with my first coach), and sure enough, not only did I finish, but my second half ironman was completed about an hour faster than the first!!! Better yet, I had no problems with nutrition this time.

I definitely do well being coached.  I am willing to put in the time, and I know I have potential, but last year really taught me the importance of picking a good coach!!!

I was supposed to head up to Maine with Kelly, but that's a no go.  Looks like I might be adding snow shoveling to my training at some point this weekend.

There is a reason we call Erica "Little Monkey Backpack."  When we let her off the leash, she gets into trouble.

I am a severe overpronator and have lots of ankle surgeries to prove it . . . I also use green superfeet in my kayanos.  The custom made (very expensive orthotics where just too much for my feet)

They sit about 4-5 inches above the knee which is perfect for me since I have larger thighs, they keep from rubbing if my legs hit the top tube on my bike, and also no chafing.  I love the shorts, they are all I have worn.

I have used Zoots and De Soto and Pearl Izumi and the 2xu fit the best, have the best compression and a great balance between a thin chamois and one that needs to be ridden for hours and it is a little larger.  All others were too thin.

I can't.  Per Doug I need to race or do a race simulation (4 x 1 mile repeats all out).  I'll take the 5K and then running the rest out with Erica.

Warm up and then meet us for the 5K.  Its in New Haven.

I need several pairs of new shorts.  I've completely worn mine out.  I'm thinking of buying a pair of these:

http://www.cliffkeen.com/product/WTSF8-The-Endeavor-Womens-Compression-Tri-Short,445,170.htm

These are the shorts QT2 is using for our uniforms this year.  I've never used them before but thought I should train in a pair before racing in them.

I ordered 5 pairs of shorts a few months ago.  My favorite so far are the Zoot shorts.  Love them!  They are comfortable and fit perfectly.

I'm going to try and get in 90 minutes on the trainer.  Husband is at work for the day, and we're having a birthday party for my oldest tonight.  I have a lot of cleaning and cooking to do.

I scheduled a deep tissue massage for Tuesday.  I am so excited (and scared ).
