Here's what I'll be rockin tomorrow at my 10 mile TT.  404 front, powertap disc covered rear, and a computer.  NOTHING ELSE.  No cages, no bottles no bento box, no saddle bag, even stripped off the cadence sensor.  It's not a sanctioned race, so I'll be able to use my tri top, which is the tightest fitting top I have.  Flat kit will go in the rear pocket.

Wow, sexy bike Laughing Good Luck!

you're right about how it's measured.  The reason why though that it's much more valuable (and also much more expensive) is because it's nearly 100% accurate.  Your HR takes time for it to adjust to your effort.  A power meter takes less than a second to notice differences in pedaling force.  You can also be going at the same effort for 2 hours straight, and your HR will slowly climb as you fatigue...aka cardiac drift.  A power meter will not vary.

Ok...on to your question.  The next year is an exciting time for power meters as more companies are entering the market.  Currently, the main two types of power meters available are hub based and crank based.  Meaning the power meter is in the hub of your rear wheel (powertap brand) or in your crank (SRM and Cinco Quarq brands).

Powertap - currently it's the most affordable.  Brand new, you can get a decent powertap built into a training wheel for about $1000.  Used, you can find it for $500-700.  The pros is that it's affordable, and it's easy to swap between bikes (if you want to use it on both your road and TT bike).  The downside is that if you use race wheels, you can't use it during your race.  The solution to that though is to buy a disc cover for this training wheel to turn it into a race wheel for tris and TTs.  But again the downside is that you can't use a disc in road races.  You could always get a powertap built into a race wheel and use it for both training and racing if you wish.

SRM & Cinco Quarq - SRM has been considered the gold standard and is the most expensive.  The Quarq is relatively new to the market, but has a great reputation thus far and has a slightly cheaper price point.  A SRM will run you about $3k brand new...a Quarq...about $1800.  Used, hard to say because they don't come up to often...but you're still looking at $1800 for a SRM and $1200-1400 for a quarq.  What's good about them is that they are crank based...which means you can use both race and training wheels with them.  Swapping it out between bikes can be a chore, but it's possible.

New players are also coming in.  Garmin just bought out a company called metrigear that was developing a pedal based power meter.  The great thing about that is that pedals are very easy to interchange between bikes.  And this solves the race wheel problem that the powertap has.  Nobody knows yet how much it will cost, or when they will hit the market...but rumors are that it will be in the same price point of the powertap (around $1k) and will come out sometime late in 2011 or early 2012.  SRM's patent on their power meter technology has also ran out, so there are other companies using their technology to enter the market soon as well.  Keep in mind that power meters are expensive because of the R&D used to develop them...not really because they are super expensive to make.

So when considering a power meter, you really need to think about what your needs are first.  Do you plan to road race?  Do you plan to use a power meter on more than one bike?  How often would you switch between bikes?  2-4 times a year?  Or 2-4 times a month?

For me, I went with the powertap in a training wheel because it was the most affordable.  I have a disc cover for it to use it for racing time trials and tris.  However, I do plan to road race where I can't use a disc...but I still plan to use race wheels.  In this case I made the decision that I do not need a power meter to do road races.  The reason being that road racing is more about conserving energy in the draft of the peloton and responding to attacks.  Meaning your power will be all over the place.  Not like a time trial or a triathlon where your goal is to ride steady at your goal power.

For now, I'm very happy with my powertap.  But if I had to do it all over again, I would strongly consider waiting for the pedal based meters to come out, and also see if any other crank based power meters hit the market at a lower price point.

At this point though, you can't go wrong with looking for a used powertap wheel...see how you like it.  Honestly...it's not for everyone.  Like I mentioned before...you still need to put in the work.

Hmmm... that means I will now be on the lookout for Powertap integrated into a good quality back wheel and... if I don't find anything in the next few months, then I might just hold off and wait to see how much the pedal-based ones will be in the near future. Thanks so much!! Super informative.

Sweet ride!  Someday I hope to grab a TT/Tri bike I had the itch the other day while I was in the LBS but I am in no way ready to lay down the the cash for it yet.

Good luck on TT.  It sounds like you are ready to roll with it too, being stripped down and all.

Did much better than expected at my TT.  Even hit the podium...first time ever.  There were only 21 participants in my division (Novice 4/5), but I'll take it.

I got a 500 yard swim in last night......whoopee!  The pool changed it's lap times and the lady at check in didn't tell me before I got through and in the water.  So basically I wasted my gas to get there and back.  I had 100 yards in when someone came from the office and told me what happened and she told they would wait until the last minute to get me out of the water.  I was frustrated but they told me they would put a couple of visits back on my pass.

I have been into getting many posts up as of late.  I've been getting my training in but just haven't had a lot of desire to do much posting.  This is my recovery week and it seems to have hit a a decent time by the way the cards are being played out.  My wife's aunt has had a pretty serious surgery and we may have to go back to Ohio this weekend.  My wife was there already and, actually just got back at 2:30 AM this morning.  It sounds pretty bad for her aunt.  They are not giving her much time.

Dirk P. - Thanks for the welcome back.  Just a lot on my plate right now as you can imagine.  I would read the posts, but sometimes wonder if I really belong in this group since so many of you are accomplished tri-ers already.  That is probably why several individuals have dropped out.

Is the April tri too ambitious?  I don't expect to place, but is that doable for my first one?  1/2 m. swim, 23.8 m. bike, 3.1 m. run

Thanks!

I think that is very doable especially if it's just for experience, and I am not a triathlete yet. I love being part of a group that is willing to answer dumb newbie questions. That is what this is for not for accomplished triathletes to boast about themselves. On that same note it is good to here how they do in training and racing so you know the information they give you works for the.

Good Luck

I think it is doable but mainly if you have been doing some other training for cardio.  I can't remember your swim experience but that would be where I would be concerned the most.  If you are a strong swimmer, not necessarily fast, just are capable of confidently swimming a the distance in open water it is definitely a doable race.  Even if you have to slow the bike and run down to finish.

BTW, I am not an accomplished tri-er.  I have completed a grand total of 2 triathlons, so my experience is limited primarily to the run.  I have done several running races up to and including a marathon but triathlon is fairly new to me.  I would suggest you hang in here with the group and ask ANY questions you have.  We will try to answer anything to the best of our abilities.........We all have to ask the "dumb" questions to learn, so ask away.  After yo checked back in with us a few days ago I checked your logs and there isn't much there.  If you can, throw some stuff that you have had time to do in there so you can see what you have done and the rest of us can see where you're at to better advise you.

Trust me, we are all newbies --- if not to triathlon, then at least to one or another aspect of triathlon. I, for one, know next to nothing about bikes!!! I have a Felt F5 (decent enough bike, carbon frame with 105 components... don't ask me what that means) and I have the manufacturer's wheels on it. I don't know ANYTHING about wheels and it's obviously not wise for me to invest in racing wheels yet. I do, however, want a better quality of "train AND race" wheels... what are my options?!? Some of you are real bike nerds... school the rest of us!!!

Galveston...  Ordered wetsuit today from Xterra.  Went with sleeves, but should have time to return if i need sleeveless.  What do you guys have???

I was hoping to be MOP when training was going great.  Now, I'm thinking BOP is more realistic... my left foot has developed pain right below the middle toe (bone spur?)... anyone ever had this?

I've only done 2 sprints... so no pro here... lol.  As Dirk said, if I was confident that I could do the swim then I would go for it.  1/2 mile is 800 meters.  How far can you go non-stop right now?  You should probably be able to swim 1000 straight in the pool... and def get an open water swim practice in (I still need to do this as well).

Another question: Some tris have a "walk through" the week before where you get to do the course as a practice run.  Do you know if the tri you're looking at has one?

My brand of wetsuit is nineteen (their website), long sleeve. If I lived in a warmer area (California, maybe?) then I would have considered a sleeveless one... long sleeve just makes more sense for me -- I've raced in Canada, the northeastern United States and New Zealand in mine.

I bought as cheap a wetsuit as I could but still brand new.  I bought a neo sport full sleeved suit that seems to work fine for me.  Someday I will go for a more expensive model but at my budget level I needed to go on the cheap side.  Before I purchase a more expensive suit I will be buying a tri-bike.  I am hoping in a couple of years I can get a new bike.  right now the roadie with areo's is going to have to do.

Today was a really nice day, it was 50 degrees when I arrived home. I couldn't reset throwing on my shoes and getting some miles in. I missed the gym this morning because of work so it was perfect. I ran 4.2 miles in 38 minutes, this is the run I do a lot it has lots of hills with the last one climbing 500 feet.

I bought a sleeveless wetsuit from xterra, I haven't used it yet so I don't even know if I like it yet.

If you can do the three events/distances individually in training without killing yourself, you should be fine.

I wish they had a race like that in my area where the bike is significantly longer than the swim or run.

10k sunday. in a  bit of a dilemma. I have hardly trained this last two weeks.

should I run thursday, friday, saturday. to try to get a bit of running again on the legs or..rest cause I still have a bit of  phlegm inside of me?

I think clean lungs are better than three days worth of running come sunday. whatcha think?

I also think that if I run that race with guts I can come with a similar result as if I had trained.

thoughts?
