Since my Half mary last week I have been having issues with Lack of motivation.  Its been a struggle to just complete each work out.  At first I thought it was just the fact I have been pushing too hard for too many months, but ruled that out quickly because its not an energy or fatigue issue, just motivation.  Thought about it for awhile then realized what my problem is:  I had NO RACE SCHEDULED, and by scheduled I mean actually paid for and registered.  Without the race there was nothing to look forward to and think about while training!  Found an easy fix though:  HFP Racing

Its official: My money has been sent for the GREAT BUCKEYE CHALLENGE HALF IRONMAN.  Now there is no backing out!

Will this be your first HIM? Good for you for setting the big goals!

This will be my 1st! Should be interesting, started out as peer pressure to do the race. Then everyone else changed their mind but the idea stuck! Once the idea is in there it just won't come out!

Need some help from the people in Hoosier land. My race I had scheduled for May has been canceled due to lack of interest! I guess i should have signed up earlier to show interest, procrastination is something i do well . Now I'm stuck without a race until June 17. Do any of you have any ideas for races the weekend of 5-12 or 5-19? Only thing I found around here is a bunch of 5k's and such! I did find an adventure race (bike/canoe/hike) but it is in defiance Ohio which is a pretty good drive!

Here's the link if you want to join us Pokagon Tri

A good thing about this race is that it's a 9AM start.  So there aren't going to be to many 4 AM wake up calls.

Edit:  I just checked the distance from Sidney to Pokagon and Bing maps says 2 hours 17 minutes to get there but I think that is just a little longer than it would actually take.  Pokagon is a state park and has a campground and it seems that you like camping.  Maybe that would be an option for you and your family.  There are also other campgrounds near the race site that are pretty nice.  We have stayed at a couple of them and I could steer you that way if you decide to come up.  One other thing, there is an AWESOME italian restaurant up there that we always eat at when we are there.  As a matter of fact I think Friday night my family is making the trip up to get my race packet and we are planning to eat there after I pick it up.

Man, I'm a horrible mentor!  I hope to be a little more with it this week and the next.  Finished the raised beds for my mom, went to the tasting for the wedding and successfully did NOT stuff myself with fattening food.

This is race week for me.  I have to shed the 2 lbs I've been carrying around for the last two weeks in the next day or two and then solid nutrition up through Saturday.  My race is this Saturday morning...pool swim.  First one I've ever done, so I'm looking forward to it.  I have no idea how I will do and it's always stupid to set time/speed goals for a race course you've never done before, so I'd like to just go have fun and see what happens.

My major issue with this particular race is that it could be in the 30's like it was this past weekend.  Hard to tell at this point.  If this is the case, I am not sure what I will do about the pool swim.  I know it's darn near impossible to get a tri shirt on when you are wet, so I'm thinking of keeping a jacket on my bike if the temp is 45 or less.  Armwarmers up to 55....Thoughts?

I should probably get a bike in this week too.  The weather has been so crappy and windy, it's been hard to get out and the trainer looks very unappealing at this time.

I've done a race at the beginning of April in Oregon a couple times.  It's called the Beaver Freezer.  (Begin laughter now! Laughing)  It's a frigging cold race!  The last time I did it, it was snowing  and sleeting during the bike ride and blowing cold during the run.  The swim is an indoor pool swim.

Here's how I managed the clothing:

  • trisuit and barefoot at the pool
  • ran super duper fast in bare feet on cold azzzzz concrete to transition
  • took the time to put on my Gore windstopper cycling jacket and full finger gloves
  • I was uncomfortable on the bike but I wasn't super cold
  • ran in just the tri suit.  Yes, I was cold!  Husband had a big parka ready for me at the finish line

Since it was just a sprint, I knew I would be ok with the cold.

I feel like I am posting a severely delayed reply because of all the posting going on here, but ... insanity!!

Got up this morning to someone knocking on my door at 6am. It was some of the guys I do group rides with. They told me I have 1 hour to get my a$$ in gear and meet them by the lake for a 1 lap sufferfest. This was completely unexpected. Hardly any time to get some food down & pack a few essentials for the ride. I wish it was just a ride. It ended up being one continuous interval. God I hate these guys!!! LOL

So, here I am at work contemplating whether or not to get a wheelchair and spend the day in that. I do have to say it was fun, horrible, insane, and worth it.

Ride numbers:  72.11 miles at a 20.6 mph average.

Think I will stop by their house after work at 1am and tell them it's time for a run. lol

You are lucky to have a group like this.. Iam sure I don't have to tell you.

x2, that is so awesome!

If anyone doing Pokagon wants to stay with us, you are more than welcome.  We have a couple of guest bedrooms, so you and your family could all come.  We are north of Fort Wayne- I think about 30-45 minutes from the park.

If that one sounds interesting to you you might also be interested in the Warsaw Optomist tri on June 23.  (This one would probably be closer for you than Pokagon.)  This is another one that Brenda, Allison and I are planning to race and it's an AG qualifier for USAT Nationals.  Hey, we could get Samantha and Matt to come to that one too and make it a "Junkie" owned race.

Samantha, you could join us at Pokagon in a month too. I am not sure where your at in Michigan but but working for the Great Maize and Blue (yes Matt that's what I said and if you race Pokagon there will be no scarlet and grey allowed) gives me a pretty good idea.  Bing maps says it's 1hour 37 minutes for you from downtown Ann Arbor.

Speaking of vacations - what do you all do for vacation? When we go to Oklahoma in May to visit my sister we are riding with my parents and my 22 year old nephew. I'm half tempted to tell them to drive my van and throw my bike in the back but I don't know the area at all and I don't know if there are any nice places to ride. We'll be gone Friday-Wednesday, that is a long time for me to be without my bike . I am going to search for a YMCA with a cycling class I guess.

Yeah, I'm still not sure though.  Those were descending sets of 500.  3 in all with the fastest just over 7 min.  I'm not sure how much faster I can go than that.  My game plan for last year sprint races was to just go out hard and stay out in front of the main field of the swim.  This race I have the entire half of the lane to myself, so I think I'll start out strong just under 1:30 and see if I can pick it up hard at 250-300.

Dina we usually go away for a week during the summer. This year it will be probably be one of the first two weeks of July. We have a timeshare in Las Vegas but are looking to trade for something closer to home since airfare is out of control. We are trying to do Virginia Beach this year but not sure if we are going to get it. In any case I plan on training while on vacation. I figure I should be able to swim and run the only question is whether I bring the bike or not. I was thinking of just looking at finding a gym where I could workout at for the week. If I can find one with a pool that would be ideal. I'll probably decide once I know for sure where for sure I am going. Last year we went to the Poconos and it would have been great to have had the bike to ride around there with all the elevation they have there.

mambos - 2012-04-30 7:58 PM Seriously: 72 miles at 20mph? Nice ride, I have years before I can pull off those numbers.......................... Someday I will figure out the proper nutrition to succeed at this sport....until then I am going to enjoy a double quarter pounder from McD's! It's only 733 calories so it can't be that bad.......right?

Riiiiight.  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Haha, sub 1:50 HM and you're still eating double quarter pounders!!!  Baby steps, go with just the quarter pounder next time.  And you're gonna kill that 70.3.  Good luck, and we'll compare notes again since my 70.3 is the same day.  Virtual race?

Haha.. The double quarter pounder is why it was 1:50 and not 1:45! But there soooo good. I'm sure with the training you have behind you now, you will be able to blow that time out of the water!

You're forgetting my complete lack of running genes!  I'm planning to shoot for ~8:10 pace and see if I can hold it.  I'll try to hold back at 8:20+ for the first mile, and then settle at 8:10 and see what happens.  The weather looks great: high 40s-low 50s, slight chance of showers, but super windy, 20mph with gusts to 40, which is unusual for an 8 AM race.  We'll have to see how that affects everything if it really is that windy.

mambos - 2012-05-01 7:27 PM Need some help from the people in Hoosier land.

Come on over to Angola, In. and join Brenda and I for a race on May 19.  You can do either a sprint or olympic.  That would make 2 races we would be doing together.  Now all we'll have to do is get Allison up there and we could own almost all of the age groups.

That race sounds fun! I even looked to see how far away that is from me but then I remembered I'll be on my way to Oklahoma to visit my sis.

Well I am still looking for a first triathlon (of the season) to do!  But, I think middle of May is a tad too early for me. Tongue out

Here's my deal for races this season, and why I still have not committed to anything yet... Every year the Japanese Business Society of Detroit (JBSD) puts on a "race" (it's like unofficial, but kind of official in terms of organization) at a local metro park (Kensington) for the Japanese community. (I am half Japanese.) It brings out a lot of people, it's kind of a family type event with a ton of kids, and they have some kid activities following the races.  It's got a 1 mi, 2 mi, 3 mi race, which generally are run by the kids (the 3 mile has some older folks too), and then there are a FEW adults (it's grown over the years, last year had maybe 25 people) who run the loop around the park which is 8.2 miles.  Due to timing and such (and training too, probably), I have never done the 8 mile one, and I want to!

However, the date for this has not come out yet, all I know is that it's probably in June.  It's been anywhere from the 2nd weekend to the last weekend in June, which is a key detail!  I would quite like to do the Triceratops Tri, which is held on a Wednesday evening, but I likely won't if the JBSD race is held the previous Sunday...

Basically, I'm waiting to find out when this one race is, so I can decide which my first triathlon will be!  If I don't do the Triceratops, I'm actually not sure what I'll be doing...

And let me put in a plug for my favorite local running store, Running Fit. Laughing

T-rex triathlon series in metro Detroit: http://runtrextri.com/ It's held on Wednesday evenings, so that's probably not the most convenient for out-of-towners, but hey, keep it in the back of your mind!  Running Fit always has crazy themes to their races.  If you're in the midwest, maybe you've heard of the Martian Marathon: http://martianmarathon.com/

jgerbodegrant - 2012-05-01 10:05 PM Getting excited to see what I can do on Saturday. Was pulling in my sets of 500 in the pool a little over 7 mins tonight. I think my swim time I put down of 8 mins will be more than doable for 525.

Nice swimming!  My PR for the 500 is just squeezing in under 7 minutes and you're doing intervals just over.  Yep!!  You kinda SUCK!!  You'll kill it on Saturday!

I'll predict you're gonna go under 7 for the 525.  How's that for some pressure?

DANGIT!!!!!!!

Thanks Jeff, got it.  I am also calling another swim instructor just to see how they are different.

Everyone w/o hard today!

Hey, here's a photo that shows the recovery I was talking about.  It's our very own Dirk, pulled from his facebook page.

Notice how the elbow is basically directly beside him and the hand is down near the water and in front of the body.  Pulling the elbow, and especially the hand, behind the horizontal plane of the body will eventually lead to shoulder soreness not to mention early fatigue.

First off I'm posting from my phone so.........

Dina, I'll plan to take my bike when we go on vacation too. I'll plan on checking the BT state forum and asking for groups in the area. I had some success one other time going that route. I also may try to sneak a race in while on vacation if there happens to be one in the area too.

Joanne, come on over to Pokagon. It would be an awesome time to get a bunch of us together. They are supposed to have an excellent hotel on the park grounds but I have never states there.

We'll be away on our Disney vacation that week!

Vacation...well, we kind of figure that out super last minute.  Like our honeymoon for example.  We went to Seattle/Victoria/Vancouver last year.  That was an awesome trip.  Lots of moving around, but very fun.  We are thinking some place warm, like Aruba for our honeymoon.  We are looking for a low key place to relax, but where we can venture out safely.  The catch is that it has to have awesome fresh food.  That's a must for vacations for me.  Anyone have suggestions?!

For vacations, we usually take one week skiing at Smuggler’s Notch, and another at the lake cottage.  The week at the cottage is a big training week for me since I have the lake out the door and some nasty hills to bike, with lots of free time.  Kathy and I run most days up there, so that’s fun too.  It’s such a peaceful, deserted place during the week, even though the lake turns into a major destination spot on weekends.

We’ll try to get one more week away to do something special in a warm climate, about every other year until the lottery winnings come in.  Last year just the two of us went away to the Mayan Riviera (Mexico just south of Cancun) while the kids stayed home as an anniversary present to each other, best-week-ever!
