Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by NeverTri'd Well, it's done. First Tri down! I finished in 1:47:04 which was not in my plans. I really wanted to do it in 1:30:00. However, I do have to remember that I still have a lot to learn and training to do. Also, the bike course was a little more difficult than I thought it was. I guess I was over optimistic on only 7 weeks of training. Here's a brief run-down. I'll link my race report if anyone want to look. Swim: Biggest disappointment of the day. (19:59) My first OWS was on race day. My first 150 or so went fairly well and then things went south in a hurry. Got into a bunch of traffic and began having to sight and correct my course. After a little of this I got really tired. Legs would sink while I did this and I had to work way too hard to get back on course. By about the 250 mark I had to find a kayak to hang on to. I was worn out! I really had a moment of doubt that I would finish. I rested a couple of minutes and tried again. Not much better. Eventually had to take 2 more kayak breaks on my swim. I was so very discouraged. I've easily done the swim distance in the pool so I know I have the ability. However, it will always be difficult if I don't learn to relax, deal with traffic and hold a straight course. I just have to get more experience. Bike: I made up a lot of time here. Passed lots of people who passed me in the water. Lots of hills on the ride and I ended up averaging a little over 17 mph. I'm sure I could do more if the swim hadn't killed me! Had one downhill where I hit 37 mph. Fun ride but took a lot out of me. Run: Didn't run as fast as I wanted to. Wanted to break 25:00. Ended up with a 26:08. Like the bike, I passed lots of people here. I still had the cramping problems I've had in by bricks. Calves at first and this time my quads during the final mile. Pushed through it and finished strong on the last 1/2 mile. Overall, it was a great experience. I met a very nice lady afterwards (65-69 age group). When I told her this was my first tri she look at me like I was crazy and asked "...and you chose this as your first one?" That there told me that this race must be pretty tough. She was extremely complimentary of my effort and seemed truly impressed with my time considering my limited training. She did a good job boosting my ego! Thanks everyone for the support along the way. My next effort will be August 10. Here's my race report if your interested. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/RaceLog/races-view-container.asp?... Congrats!!! |

Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Well back from Invermere, BC where my kids raced. My daughter, 6 did here first race and had a smile on her face the whole time! They put all the kids on a barge and head 50 meters out so they swim straight in! 40+ 6-7 yr olds. So proud of her for doing the whole race without stopping! My son, 10, was VERY nervous about the swim as it was 200 meters out via barge for 46 10/11 yr olds. He did awesome finishing in 5th place! Me and my wife volunteered the next day for the adult version. No barge for them, just and out and back swim. It is very disappointing not to be racing. I rode the part of the bike course with my wife the day before the race and I rode the whole course after the race...nice ride but just not the same. Plan on the whole family racing next year! It has become a family tradition. My parents and sister come out. My wife's parents and her aunt and uncle come to the race 3 years and counting! |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open 2 questions: 1) once run volume has been at 3 days a week when can I go to back to back runs and more than 3 runs a week? 2) with biking if my plan calls for say 45 minutes for my long ride what would the hurt be in doing around 2 hours if I keep it at a z1 pace? Is it possible to get hurt by going longer on the bike if once I hit my planned time I kick the intensity down to a nice and easy pace just taking in the sights? I have all this extra time on my hands and it's so nice outside I would love to go on a longer ride than is planned but don't want to do something stupid and get hurt again. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by mirthfuldragon Recapping last week: 13.75 hours working out, missed my MPW goal by 2, but my easy run on Friday was going south really quickly, so I bagged it. I was toeing the line of too much, so I think I made the right call. I was also at the end of a 12 day training block, and I have move around my run training plan a bit, so the total mileage for the last 7 day period from Friday was over 40 miles, even if my MPW was sitting around 25. 90 degree heat and 90% humidity probably also didn't help. Took Saturday off, since I signed up for a 10k on Sunday as a lark. Here's the race report. As a capsule summary, a great effort, and one I am entirely satisfied with - textbook negative splits, with a 0:53:57 finish time. I beat my 5k PR on the front end and the back end. Keep up the great work guys - hearing everyone train keeps me motivated. Charles - Outstanding Effort. When you can set PRs on your 2 5K splits - you're doing something right! Congrats and keep up the hard work! |

Things have been good, I've been working out a good amount. A few days a week of biking and running But ive been missing some swimming, a bit tough to get to the gym with the baby and all. 38 days until my first sprint and I'm feeling good. I'm most nervous about the run (my weakness). I feel shot after my rides and don't see myself getting a good time in the run. Lenny - 38 days is a lot of time to get ready and you will be stronger then than you are today. You'll also have the benefit of adrenaline. But you should also try to work on fine tuning your pace coming off the bike so you can have enough gas in the tank for the run. Bricks are the perfect way to make sure you don't put too much into your bike leg. And don't forget - you the man! Thanks man. When do you usually add in bricks? Btw nice job in the extra 15 minutes in the water and condolences on drinking bud. I just cant do it anymore. After yrs of busch light in college and bud lights post college. I cant touch the stuff. Lenny - sorry for the late reply. I usually add in the brinks during my last 2-3 weeks of training because the reduced milage and effort during the tapering phase allows my legs to handle the bricks better. With that said - what you are really working on is confidence. You need to convince yourself that you are a beast and can complete the bike/run with no problems. So I might start throwing in one brick workouts every other week until you begin to taper. That will allow you to train your muscles to handle the transition and will allow you to figure out pacing. |

Bill: I'm sorry you had to wait so long to hear this - but WAY TO GO! Proud of you for finishing. It has been great following you during your training and you worked hard to get to where you are today. And the best part is - with another month of training - you'll do even better during your second tri. Please cut yourself some slack on the swim. There are two added factors that make swimming in a race far more challenging than swimming in a pool during your training. First - you've got adrenaline pumping through your system and that makes it difficulty to get your pacing just right. Considering that this was your first race - it was bound to happen. Plus, swimming in open water is still challenging and my heart still beats a little quicker when I dive into water that I don't know well. With that said - try to do some OWS in before you next race. If you can - try to do it in the same lake where you will be racing. Getting familiar and comfortable will really help you have a great swim when you crush your second tri. Keep it up - you are doing a great job! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Sorry to have been gone for so long. I don't always have access to the internet up here which is both a blessing and a curse I'm glad to see that so many of you are really hitting your strides with your training and racing. Just goes to show that beer can help us do great things. Things with me have been good. I've managed to get in some good workouts and I finally managed to get in a 35 mile bike ride - my longest of the season. I won't be as ready as I would like for the HIM in September - but I'm feeling more confident with each passing week of consistent training. I'm knocking on wood here - but my back feels pretty good. On Sunday, my cousin and I were out doing our long ride and we stopped for lunch. I ordered a beer and it turned out to be one of the most thirst quenching beers I have ever had. It was a Perrin Grapefruit IPA and the grapefruit really added something to the drinkability. I'm sure the fact that I was 20 miles into a ride helped but the drinkability was so good that I could see myself putting away a six pack on a single hot afternoon. I was tempted to order a second but resisted the urge. Hopefully, I'll be able to go visit the brewery which is downstate sometime during my visit. I know it's wednesday - but I'm gonna post the goals page. I'll try to get into town and post it on time next week. Prost! |

Veteran 340 Dallas | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Alive in Texas. Hello to all. I thought I had better check in to see what is going on. Obviously you guys are staying busy. My crew has returned from a mission trip in Costa Rica. I had a couple great hikes at elevation that I could not have done 2 years ago (before tri training and weight loss). It felt good to be active with my boys and the local kids. Getting fit makes a huge difference! On the tri front, I forget what a bike looks like. I did swim in the ocean briefly (does that count?). Workouts still consist of Crossfit. My strength and flexibility has increased. I am still having hamstring soreness (slight) with running so I am just doing the running in Crossfit. Plan is still for an Oly in October. My tri buddy got a new bike (same as mine) so I assume we are going to be doing some biking. I did get a new truck as well (f150) and had a blast driving it at the farm last weekend. We did have TWO minivans and mine was 9 years old so you can say I feel a little different driving a truck!!! All the best in training, |

For running, let your body be your guide. At a low-volume, you'll probably get more progress from doing less, more often. Start with a mile a day for four or six days, then try for two miles, and go from there. Keep the pace easy, and just build base for a while. If you feel stressed or beat half a day later, then back off and take a rest day, or hit the swim and bike. The training maxim - mostly easy, sometimes hard - applies. One of the best things I've done this year was when I rode the Dells half iron course, which completely annihilated me - it broke me, and I almost quit, but I finished it - and now I know where the 11 is on the 1-10 scale. Knowing that limit lets me train accordingly. For riding, the same applies - if it feels good, do it. Time in the saddle counts, always. |
