sorry Dee...I know you replied...and you are the busiest of us all!!! I also know that Amy IN barely lets a day go by without inspiring the entire bunch of us...plus, I know one of my biggest cheerleaders is also on this team...and truthfully, I am having lots of issues with my parents and siblings...and instead of taking it out on them, I did so on the group who has helped me to lose the 40 lbs, quit smoking and to be able to not only run but run longer distances then i have in many many years...to get back on my bike again...and to swim...so I owe you a huge apology! I am just having a bad week...it has to get better!! right!?!?

SORRY GUYS!! and GALS!!!

  • Hey, if you can't whine to your mentor group, who CAN you whine to? We've been there. We're still there, in fact. (Think of all my whining about work!)

How's your Dad doing? Last I remember, he was having a stress test done, right? Did you get the results yet?

crea0029 - 2008-03-19 2:35 PM So I need the advice of the smart ones in the group (which is everyone )  I want to sign up for a local bike ride called Minnesota Ironman.  The distances are 30, 62, and 100 miles.  I know for a fact I am not going to do the 100, but I am playing back and forth with the 62 and the 30.  There is a 8 hour time limit so I am not in any hurry.  But I am not also scheduled for a long bike ride that weekend or anytime around that day for the half Ironman training plan.  So I am stuck.  If I did the 30, that would be cool.  But part of me wants the additional challenge and it would also prove to me that I could handle the bike ride for my half ironman.  So anyone have any advice????

I hope it is not too late to answer.  It depends on the periodazation (sp?) style/rhythm you are using in your training.  If a long ride coincides with a long week, you are probably OK.  If it coincides with a rest or recovery week then you need to stay short.  You need time for your body to heal in the training process and going long in a short week can really mess up your training...  I hope that gives you what you need???  PS:  If you are not up to a full long, DON"T do it.  An over-training injury would be a disaster.  Emerson

boo hoo! boo hoo! noone around AGAIN!!!...BELIEVE ME - I know we get busy and we all have lives...but when someone asks for help (pam)and only two of the eight answer...and I keep finding us on the second page....maybe it is time for medic0020's group to disburse and find new mentors teams?!? I love you guys...but I also need kicks here and there...and I can't even get some of you to kick me lately...we already lost Chris and Nate to who knows what/where?....don't need any more MIA team mates!! COME BACK!!!! I hope to see more action on this thread.

Pam hope you get your answers...you may try posting a thread with the question under my cup of Joe...if you do not get the help you need here.

Good Point, I was so wound up with getting my kids here that I did not answer the question -- until now.  Getting them here was a train wreck.  However, we did get some wonderful news that I will share later... It has kept us on cloud 9.  More to come, EK

Don't worry about it, if you can't get upset with family -- who can you be?  I get more support here than from anywhere else -- except maybe Peggy -- and I greatly appreciate it.  I start my transition to full tri training on 4/3 and I will look forward to learning and sharing with everyone... even when we are a bit busy...

PS:  Did I say I had good news to share later...

    Emerson,

You have a very good point.  I actually do not have a long ride in the schedule that week either the week before or the week after.  The only thing I am thinking is a good thing about the longer course if the fact that since there is no time limit, it would be nice just have a nice day and ride and know I can do the ride distance for the half ironman.  I have never ridden that far before and it would be hard looking at that distance for the first time race day.  Thanks for the advice!

Easter is a day to celebrate life:

Here are a few things I am thankful for...

Peggy turned 50 today, five years ago this week, she almost did not survive a stroke, we are thankful...

Through my running, I have met some of the most decent folks I have ever known...

This is my Saturday group...  (I am third from the right on the bottom)

And, most importantly, I will posting the most wonderful news soon...

Happy Easter everyone and may God's blessings be upon you every day,  Emerson

Julie,  I actually find transition practice fun.  Here is what I have done in the past:  I wear a tri suit so there is no changing for me from swim to bike so I put my swim cap on, goggles and get my feet wet.  I set up a make shift "transition area" and have all my stuff laid out.  Then I pretend I am running out of the water...go to my area...do the transition...jump on my bike and head out for a five minute ride to just get adjusted...then ride back in...do the bike to run transition with race number belt and shoes and everything and go out for a five minute run to get the feel for that.  You can do this also with brick workouts but I think it is just fun to list in the sports area of training transitions.  I repeat that about 3 or 4 times till I get it down and I do that once a week for the last few weeks before the race.  You would be amazed how much more efficient it makes you look compared to everyone else and it makes you feel confident too.  Good luck and have fun!

Hello everyone, had a great weekend with Peg's 50th birthday, kids in town, etc., etc. etc.  Got in a great Trail run this morning...

Pam, when you are really sick of that weather, come on down.

Amy in Indiana,  That goes for you as well.

Dee, I hope you are doing OK, your absence is rather obvious.

Eric, good of you to inspire us all the time.  You need to keep away from sick people, they keep making you sick.

Amy in CA, I hope the wonderful children of yours are still as cute as when we met them.

Julie, good luck on the swimming.  I start 4/3...

Mike, glad to see you are still out there...

Anyone who comes to Tucson can take this trail run with me... There is no better way to start the day!

I'm back...my nose is a freakin' fountain of snot today but I'm getting in some workouts.  We had to have both heat pumps replaced at home and we had already planned on getting new carpet in the 3 downstairs bedrooms (we wanted hardwood but WAY too expensive right now).  I got in 90 mins on the trainer while the 2 carpet guys and 8 heating/air guys were in and out of the house all day.  I think I'm almost over whatever I had but all the pulling up carpet and moving furniture seems to have stirred up every molecule of dust. I don't usually have allergies but I sure seem to be dealing with them today.

I hope everyone is doing well.  I've got my first sprint of the season this Saturday and I'm looking forward to it.  Karen is doing her first ever sprint so I think she's pretty nervous about it.  She'll do great though.

    Eric,

Thanks for the wonderfully detailed description.  Good luck on the tri and I hope you feel better... EK

Well ladies and gentleman, it's almost the end of March and while we're all still full of enthusiasm for training, the real world has started to rear it's ugly head and interfere with our great intentions. Seems like this is about the time every year that this starts to happen.  This group really jelled quickly and has been going like crazy.  Emerson and I have talked about the possibility of adding someone new to the group, not to change the group's dynamics but possibly as a way of reinvigorating us all.  I'll let him handle the introduction but I think our new member has a lot to offer our group and hopefully a lot that we can offer him as well.
